A Case Study on Closed Captions: Focusing on on Netflix (넷플릭스 <오징어 게임> 폐쇄자막 연구)

  • This study aims to evaluate the accuracy and completeness of Korean and English closed captions for Netflix's "Squid Game" and to present implications based on the findings. To achieve this, the closed captioning guidelines of the U.S. Federal Communications Commission, DCMP, and the Korea Communications Commission were identified and analyzed. The analysis of the subtitle of the entire "Squid Game" series reveals that, while Korean closed captions accurately present slangs and titles, they present non-existent information in speaker identification. In English closed captions, speaker identification guidelines are well followed, but omissions of slangs and title mistranslations are observed. In terms of completeness, both Korean and English closed captions are found to omit certain audio parts. To address these issues, the study suggests strengthening the QA process, establishing a system to communicate original text problems during translation, and utilizing general English subtitles.

  • The hearing impaired have a substantially lower comprehension of audiovisual television programs due to their inability to hear sounds. Therefore, research was needed to improve their understanding by making these programs more accessible. This thesis is based on a proposal to find a solution for automating closed captions.

  • 지상파 방송에서는 청각장애인을 위해 폐쇄자막(closed caption) 서비스가 제공되고 있지만, 이를 저장하여 VOD 서비스 등에 제공하고자 할 때는 영상과의 비동기화(desynchronization) 문제로 인해 활용할 수 없는 문제가 있다. 본 논문에서는 이를 해결하기 위해 자동 음성인식(automatic speech recognition)과, 자막 동기화 문제에 맞게 변경된 동적계획법(modified dynamic programming)을 이용하는 방법을 제안한다. 문자열 정렬에서 삽입과 삭제 등 간격(gap)의 발생을 제어하는 제약조건과 그에 따른 점수 구조를 적용함으로써 문자열 정렬 성능을 개선한다. 또한 정렬된 폐쇄자막과 음성인식 문자열로부터 시간 동기정보를 복원하고 동기화된 자막을 생성하는 방법을 제안한다. 실제 TV 프로그램과 자막에 적용하여 기존 방법에 비해 성능의 향상이 있음을 확인하였다.

A Study on Subtitles Preferred by Hearing-impaired College Students (청각장애 대학생이 선호하는 자막에 관한 연구)

  • My study aimed to investigate the current status of learning support for hearing-impaired college students, as well as their preferences and satisfaction regarding subtitles and professional shorthand learning support. Hearing-impaired individuals communicate using sign language, written language, and spoken language. Closed captioning services for the hearing-impaired have expanded as social awareness of protecting the right to information access for people with disabilities has increased. This study was conducted with 22 hearing-impaired college students who fully responded to the survey items out of a total of 30 participants. Analysis of the style and position of television subtitles by gender revealed a preference for subtitles to be located at the bottom center of the screen. Regarding professional shorthand learning support, 77.3% of respondents indicated that their subtitle preference was independent of the number of subtitle lines. Satisfaction with professional shorthand learning support services by gender was found to be 4.14±0.44, with female students showing higher satisfaction than male students. These results suggest that offering various subtitle options and providing customizable features for subtitle types and positions are essential for improving the learning environment for hearing-impaired college students.
