  • Several well resistance effects induced by bending, confining stress, temperature, bubbles, and apparent opening size have been considered and researched for the reasonable PBD design. The effect of apparent opening size(AOS), however, was not extensively studied and the clogging effect by AOS was not clearly researched. In this paper, the slurry consolidation test which 4 types of PBD are installed in large slurry consolidometer($H{\times}D$, $2.0m{\times}1.2m$) is performed to investigate the clogging effect by filter's AOS. The results show that the internal clogging is observed all types of PBD, and a quantity of inflowed soil particles are increased at the lower part of PBD and the kink zone. In addition, the internal clogging phenomenon does not relate with the shape and size of PBD. In filter's AOS test, it was easily observed that soil particles bigger than AOS of tested filter passed PBD filter by SEM. This paper demonstrates that the reduction of discharge capability may be accelerated by internal clogging at the kink zone.

  • Population density due to urbanization is making people interested in underground space development and much interest in TBM construction with low vibration and noise. This led to a lot of research on TBM. However, research on the characteristics of the cutterhead opening of the TBM equipment being occluded under the ground conditions under which it is excavated is insufficient. Accordingly, a study was conducted to investigate clogging of the cutterhead opening during the shield TBM rolling. To identify the clogging of cutterhead openings in SHIELD TBM equipment, the reduced model experiment was divided into clay rate (10%, 30%, 50%, 60%), cutterhead opening rate (30%, 50%, 60%), and cutterhead rotation direction (one-way, two-way) and rotational speed (3 RPM) and conducted in 36 cases. Results of scale model test on shield TBM clogging, it was analyzed that the ground condition containing clay soil increased the clogging effect in both directions than the unidirectional rotation, and that the lower the rotational speed of the cutterhead, the less the clogging effect. Accordingly, the direction of cutterhead rotation, rotational speed and opening rate are calculated by taking into account ground conditions during ground excavation, the clogging effect can be reduced. It is believed to be effective in saving air as the clogging effect is reduced. Therefore, this study is expected to be an important material for domestic use of shield TBM.

  • An application frequency of vertical drainage method is increasing as an effective consolidation acceleration method. PBD method is most frequently used as a consolidation acceleration method in vertical drainage methods. PBD is economical and easy to operate but has some problems those are an environmental pollution and a decrease of a discharge capacity caused by bending of drainage materials when it is used in great depth. SCP method was frequently used because it's discharge capacity was good but now it is rarely used because of an increase of the material price because of an order imbalance. As the way to solve these problems, GCP method has been to the fore. For analyzing the effect of GCP method on the discharge capacity, three types of composite discharge capacity tests are done by using GCP, SCP and PBD respectively with the circle case, ${\phi}38{\times}h70cm$. On the contrary to this, GCP shows the worst discharge capacity for a decrease of the void ratio and the clogging phenomenon caused by increasing load. Also to figure out the clogging range of GCP, the clogging of GCP is checked in each load stage with a large case($1.0m{\times}0.5m{\times}1.1m$) which has clear acrylic front face. The diameter of GCP was 35cm and a clogging phenomenon occurred in 10% approximately. The result shows that the discharge capacity of GCP was given the lowest value for a decrease of the void ratio and the clogging phenomenon causing by increasing load. And the clogging phenomenon mostly occurred within 10% of GCP's diameter range.

  • A pilot-scale sand-box experiment was performed in order to investigate the effect of cross-flow velocity on the clogging of the filter sand in a model filtration pond. The clogging phenomenon was observed during the operation with the cross-flow varied in stages in a range of 0~40 cm/sec, and the experimental result was analyzed using a numerical code. Results showed that the cross-flow velocity in this range had no influence on the development of clogging and that clogging occurred mostly on the filter-surface. It was found that while the production rate decreased from $5m^3/m^2-day$ to $3m^3/m^2-day$ the clogging coefficient of the top 50 cm layer increased up to about 30,000 sec, which corresponded to 87% of the clogging coefficient of the total 2.4 m layer. Of the clogging coefficient of the top 50 cm layer, surface clogging constituted 90% while the other 10% was intermediate clogging. It was also found that the surface clogging increased while the intermediate clogging remained constant as the operation continued, and that filtrate turbidity along the filtration depth remained constant in spite of the increase in clogging.

  • In order to provide the mechanism of nozzle clogging, recovered nozzles for high strength steel grade were examined carefully after continuous casting. The thickness of clogged material in SEN is increased in the following order: from the bottom to the top of the nozzle, upper part of slag line, and the pouring hole. Nozzle clogging material begins to form due the adhesion of metal to nozzle wall, the decarburization, and reduction of oxide in the refractory by Al and Ti in the melt. The reduction of oxide in the refractory by Al and Ti improves the wettability of the melt on the refractory and forms a thin Al-Ti-O layer. Metal containing micro alumina inclusions is solidified on the Al-Ti-O layer, and the solid layer grows due to the heat evolution through the nozzle wall. Thermodynamic calculation has been made for the related reactions. The effect of superheat to the nozzle clogging is discussed on ultra low carbon steel and low carbon steel.

  • Although the specific resistance to filtration is the most frequently employed means for characterizing dewaterability of a sludge, it presently is not possible to design nor to prediet performance of dewatering facilities using traditional linearized parabolic filtration equation, that is, the specific resistance model because of theoretical and practical inadequacies of the concept. Limitations of the specific resistance model reflect the need to examine fundamental sludge properties and filtration behaviors affecting dewaterability. From this study, two major limitations of the specific resistance model were noted. First, specific resistance values are very dependent on the sludge concentration because of the variations of particle size distribution and cake clogging to occur when surface area mean diameter is less than $25{\mu}m$ for activated sludge, $18{\mu}m$ for water treatment plant sludge. Second, nonparabolic filtration behavior can result from cake clogging, caused by the migration of fine particles into the cake pores, accelated by skin effect with highly compressible sludges.

  • The geotextile filter, which is installed between the ground and the lining and used as a tunnel drainage system, should have sufficient groundwater drainage capacity so that water pressure does not act on the lining. The clogging may have a serious effect on the long term behaviour of geotextile filters. Two typical weathered residual soils in Korea, Shinnae-dong soil and Poi-dong soil, were chosen to investigate the in-plane flow characteristics of the soils with varying degree of compressive stresses applied on the geotextiles and with various conditions of hydraulic gradient. The Shinnae-dong soil is a relatively coarse material classified as'SW-SM'; on the other hand, the Poi-dong soil is much finer and is classified as'SC'. Based on the comparison of the $O_{95}$ of geotextile to the $D_{15}$ of residual soils, existing clogging criteria were reviewed, and a tentative clogging criterion for the in-plane flow of the residual soil through filters was proposed. The Shinnae-dong soil showed noticeable clogging phenomenon, while the clogging of the Poi-dong soil was not so serious. The Poi-dong soil seemed to be hindered in particle transport by its cohesiveness.

  • Sand drain as a vertical drainage is widely used in soft ground improvement. Recently, sand, the principal source of sand drain, is running out. A laboratory model test was carried out to utilize gravel as a substitute for sand. Though which the characteristics of gravel are compared to those of sand for engineering purpose. Two cylindrical containers for the model test were filled with marine clayey soil from the west coast of Korea with a column in the center, one with sand, the other with gravel. Vibrating wire type piezometers were installed at the distance of 1.0D, 1.5D and 2.0D from the center of the column. D is the diameter of the column. The transient process of pore water pressure with loading and the characteristics of consolidation were studied with the data gained from the measuring instrument place on the surface of the container. The parameter study was performed for the marine clayey soil before and after the test in order to check the effectiveness of the improvement. The clogging effect was checked at various depth in gravel column after the test. According to the test, the settlement was found to be smaller in gravel drain than in sand drain. The increase in bearing capacity by gravel pile explains the result. The clogging effect was not found in gravel column. As a result, it is assumed that gravel is relatively acceptable as a drainage material.

  • Sand drain as a vertical drainage is widely used in soft ground improvement. Recently, sand, the principal source of sand drain, is running out. The in-situ tests were carried out to utilize gravel as a substitute for sand. In-situ tests area was divided into two areas by material used. One is Sand Drain(SD) and Sand Compaction Pile(SCP) area, the other is Gravel Drain(GD) and Gravel Compaction Pile(GCP) area. Both areas were monitored to obtain the information on settlement, pore water pressure and bearing capacity by measuring instruments for stage loading caused by embankment. The results of measurements were analyzed, The clogging effect was checked at various depth in gravel column after the test. According to the test results, the settlement was found to be smaller in gravel drain than in sand drain. The increase in bearing capacity by gravel pile explains the result. The clogging effect was not found in gravel column. It is assumed that gravel is relatively acceptable as a drainage material. Gravel is considered to be a better material than sand for bearing capacity, and it is found that bearing capacity is larger when gravel is used as a gravel compaction pile than as a gravel drain.
