  • Compared to OWR (One-Way Ranging) method that requires precise network time synchronization, TWR (Two-Way Ranging) method has advantages in building an indoor WPAN (Wireless Personal Area Network) location system with lower cost. However, clock offsets of nodes in WPAN system should be eliminated or compensated to improve location accuracy of the TWR method. Because conventional clock offset elimination methods requires multiple TWR transactions to reduce clock offset, they produce network traffic burden instead. This paper presents a clock offset estimation method that can reduce clock offset error with a single TWR transaction. After relative clock offsets of sensor nodes are estimated, clock offsets of mobile tags are estimated using a single TWR communication. Simulation results show that location accuracy of the proposed method is almost similar to the conventional clock offset elimination method, while its network traffic is about a half of the conventional method.

  • Indoor wireless positioning system uses ranging information of beacons in order to precisely estimate a tag location. To estimate distance between each beacons and tag, the system calculates arrival time of a tag pulse with clock of each beacon including independent clock offset. This clock offset seriously affects the performance of ranging and positioning. We propose in this paper a clock offset compensation method to solve this problem. To verify the performance of the proposed method, we simulated location estimation with random clock offset between -1,000ppm and 1,000ppm, and the result shows that the proposed scheme effectively solves the clock offset problem.

  • In this paper, we analyzed the influence of different observation stations distributions on satellite clock offset estimation based on the PANDA software. The result shows that, when the distance between stations is shorter than 200km, the correlation of troposphere parameter and satellite clock offset parameter is strong, the accuracy of satellite clock offset estimation will be up to 0.8ns; when the distance between stations is up to 500km, as the correction of troposphere parameter and satellite clock offset parameter is significantly reduced, and the two kinds of parameters can be distinguished.

  • Most of single frequency GPS receivers utilize low-quality crystal oscillators. If a lowquality crystal oscillator is utilized as the time reference of a GPS receiver, the receiver's clock bias grows very fast due to its inherent low precision and poor stability. To prevent the clock bias becoming too large, large clock jumps are intentionally injected to the clock bias and the time offset for clock steering purpose. The abrupt changes in the clock bias and the time offset, if not properly considered, induce serious accuracy degradation in relative differential positioning. To prevent the accuracy degradation, this paper proposes an efficient and systematic method to eliminate the undesirable clock jump effects. Experiment results based on real measurements verify the effectiveness of the propose method.

  • A signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) enhancement algorithm using multiple chirp symbols with clock drift is proposed for accurate ranging. Improvement of the ranging performance can be achieved by using the multiple chirp symbols according to Cramer-Rao lower bound; however, distortion caused by clock drift is inevitable practically. The distortion induced by the clock drift is approximated as a linear phase term, caused by carrier frequency offset, sampling time offset, and symbol time offset. SNR of the averaged chirp symbol obtained from the proposed algorithm based on the phase derotation and the symbol averaging is enhanced. Hence, the ranging performance is improved. The mathematical analysis of the SNR enhancement agrees with the simulations.

  • A wireless positioning system using ultra-wideband (UWB) for indoor wireless positioning uses ranging data in order to accurately estimate location. Commonly, ranging uses time of arrival (TOA), time difference of arrival (TDOA) based on arrival time. The most fundamental issue in the ranging for wireless positioning is to obtain clock synchronization among the sensor nodes and to correct an error caused by the relative clock offset from each node. In this paper, we propose ranging and positioning technique using common clock in order to solve both clock synchronization and clock offset problems. To verify the performance of proposed, we simulated ranging and positioning in channel model introduced by IEEE 802.15.4a Task Group and then results show that location estimation is unaffected by clock offset.

  • In this paper, we have analyzed the performance of synchronization of CCK(Complementary Code Keying) modulation scheme used for IEEE 802.11g wireless LAM system supporting 54 Mbps of high speed data rate over 2.4 GHz. At receiver, the clock frequency offset is caused by noise or fading. This frequency error occurs the offset of clock timing and causes ISI. Therefore the tracking is required to reduce the clock timing offset. The DLL(Delay Lock Loop), asychronization mode, performing tacking the clock is used for the simulation. The simulation result shows jitter variance and BER performance in the AWGN and multipath fading channel environment.

  • UWB signal with high resolution capability can be used to estimate ranging and positioning in wireless personal area network. The node works on its local clock and the frequency differences of nodes have serious affects on ranging algorithms estimating locations of mobile nodes. The low rate UWB, IEEE802.15.4a, describes asynchronous two way ranging methods such as TWR and SDS-TWR working without any additional network synchronization, but the algorithms can not eliminate the effect of clock frequency differences. Therefore, the mechanisms to characterize the crystal difference is essential in typical UWB PHY implementations. In high rate UWB, characterizing of crystal offset with tracking loop is not required. But, detection of the clock frequency offset between the local clock and remote clock can be performed if there is little noise induced jitter. In this paper, we complete related ranging equations of high rate UWB based on TWR with relative frequency offset, and analyze a residual error in the ideal equations. We also evaluate the performance of the relative frequency offset algorithm by simulation and analyze the ranging errors according to the number of TWR to compensate coarse clock resolution. The results show that the relative frequency offset compensation and many times of TWR enhance the performance to converge to a limited ranging errors even with coarse clock resolutions.

  • In this paper, the performance of ranging measurement, which is generated using two receiver clock offsets in one receiver, was analyzed. A spoofer transmits a counterfeited spoofing signal which is similar to the GPS signal with hostile purposes, so the same tracking technique can be applied to the spoofing signal. The multi-correlator can generate two receiver clock offsets in one receiver. The difference between these two clock offsets consists of the path length from the spoofer to the receiver and the delay of spoofer system. Thus, in this paper, the ranging measurement was evaluated by the spoofer localization performance based on the time-of-arrival (TOA) technique. The results of simulation and real-world experiments show that the position and the system clock offset of the spoofer could be estimated successfully.

  • QoS-support technology in networks is based on measuring QoS metrics which reflect a magnitude of stability and performance. The one-way delay measurement of the QoS metrics especially requires a guarantee of clock synchronization between end-to-end hosts. However, the hosts in networks have a relative or absolute difference in clock time by reason of clock offsets. flock skews and clock adjustments. In this paper, we present a theorem, methods and simulation results of one-way delay and clock offset estimations between end-to-end hosts. The proposed theorem is a relationship between one-way delay, one-way delay variation and round-trip time And we show that the estimation error is mathematically smaller than a quarter of round-trip time.
