  • Neurosurgeons have been trying to reduce surgical invasiveness by applying minimally invasive keyhole approaches. Therefore, this paper clarifies the detailed surgical technique, its limitations, proper indications, and contraindications for a superciliary keyhole approach as a minimally invasive modification of a pterional approach. Successful superciliary keyhole surgery for unruptured aneurysms requires an understanding of the limitations and the use of special surgical techniques. Essentially, this means the effective selection of surgical indications, usage of the appropriate surgical instruments with a tubular shaft, and refined surgical techniques, including straightforward access to the aneurysm, clean surgical dissection, and the application of clips with an appropriate configuration. A superciliary keyhole approach allows unruptured anterior circulation aneurysms to be clipped safely, rapidly, and less invasively on the basis of appropriate surgical indications.

  • An expert system of collision avoidance developed by CLIPS and Visual C++ is continuously introduced in this paper. Further, a simulation function of collision avoidance is added to the expert system, the function can simulate the avoidance actions of own ship and a specific target of a period of future time. This function can help navigators to estimate collision risk and make proper collision avoidance actions in dangerous situations for navigational safety of ships. Furthermore, navigational rules can also be evaluated during the process of simulation.

  • This paper represents the expert system for selecting the superstructure types of bridges in the part of a preliminary bridge design. The system is implemented with the expert system tool called K-CLIPS which uses the production system for knowledge representation and provides the mechanism of forward chaining. This expert system is composed of a knowledge base, data base and a knowledge module built by the tool which consists of the knowledges on design procedures. During symbolic processing the data base supports the sub system in knowledge base.

  • In this paper, we propose a new approach for content-based video retrieval using non-parametric based motion classification in the shot-based video indexing structure. Our system proposed in this paper has supported the real-time video retrieval using spatio-temporal feature comparison by measuring the similarity between visual features and between motion features, respectively, after extracting representative frame and non-parametric motion information from shot-based video clips segmented by scene change detection method. The extraction of non-parametric based motion features, after the normalized motion vectors are created from an MPEG-compressed stream, is effectively fulfilled by discretizing each normalized motion vector into various angle bins, and by considering the mean, variance, and direction of motion vectors in these bins. To obtain visual feature in representative frame, we use the edge-based spatial descriptor. Experimental results show that our approach is superior to conventional methods with regard to the performance for video indexing and retrieval.

  • The dissecting aneurysms of the posterior cerebral circulation arise most commonly from the vertebral artery and occasionally extend to the posterior inferior cerebellar artery[PICA]. The dissecting aneurysm localized in the PICA without involving the vertebral artery is rare. We present a PICA dissecting aneurysm that had kaleidoscopic clinical course of bleeding, occlusion, and recanalization before the surgery. The patient had serial follow-up angiograms based on significant changes of clinical status. The patient successfully underwent microsurgical trapping with clips for the dissecting aneurysm and showed neurological improvement.

  • In practice, the most important performance parameters for music information retrieval (MIR) service are robustness of fingerprint in real noise environments and recognition accuracy when the obtained query clips are matched with the an entry in the database. To satisfy these conditions, we proposed a conjoined fingerprint algorithm for use in massive MIR service. The conjoined fingerprint scheme uses interhash and intrahash algorithms to produce a robust fingerprint scheme in real noise environments. Because the interhash and intrahash algorithms are masked in the predominant pitch estimation, a compact fingerprint can be produced through their relationship. Experimental performance comparison results showed that our algorithms were superior to existing algorithms, i.e., the sub-mask and Philips algorithms, in real noise environments.

  • This paper introduces a practical implementation of virtual crowd simulation software. Usual commercial crowd simulation softwares are complex and have program-like script interfaces, which makes an animator hard to learn and use them. Based on the observations that most crowd scenes include walking, running and fighting movements, we have implemented a crowd simulation system that automatically generates movements of virtual characters given user's minimal direction of initial configuration. The system was implemented as a plug-in of Maya which is one of the most commonly used 3D software for movies. Because generated movements are based on optically captured motion clips, the results are sufficiently natural.

  • A variable bandwidth filter (VBF) is proposed for cleaning signals with known instantaneous bandwidth (IB). Also, the behaviors and the characteristics of the VBF are examined in time-frequency domain (TFD). The proposed VBF clips a noisy signal along the boundaries of IB and rejects noise in the outside of the IB of the signal in TFD. It is possible to construct four kinds of VBF that are low-pass VBF, high-pass VBF, band-pass VBF and band-stop VBF.

  • The need for Fault Current Limiters (FCL) is associated with the continuous growth and interconnection of modem power systems and increase in dispersed generation facilities, which result in progressive increase in the short circuit capacity far beyond their original design capacity. Fault Current Limiters (FCL) clips the fault currents and reduces the electromechanical stresses on the network and the need to handle excessive fault currents. In addition, the reduction of the fault duration Provided by the limiter should increase the power transmission capability and improve the dynamic stability. This paper proposes the model of resistive type superconducting fault current limiter using EMTDC(Electromagnetic transients for DC analysis program). In order to verify the effectiveness of the SFCL, in this paper, the analysis of fault current in a transmission system through the EMTDC based simulation by using the modeled component of a resistive type SFCL is peformed and the detailed results are given.
