Purpose: The living standards vary between the urban and rural areas in Korea. This study aims to compare the characteristics of acute poisoning victims in urban and rural areas. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted over a period of 2 years from 2008 to 2009. The study group included adults over 19 year old with acute poisoning and who were later were admitted to the local emergency medical center located in Daegu, Korea. The exclusion criteria were 1) the victims of adverse effects of therapeutic doses of drugs, 2) the victims with chronic exposure and 3) the victims who were missing data in their emergency medical records. We divided the victims into the adult group (19-64 years old) and the old group (over 65 years old). Results: There were 569 acute poisoning victims during the study period, and they constituted 1.11% of the total ED visits (51,199). Four hundred seventy six patients were enrolled in this study. Out of the 359 acute poisoning victims, 252 victims were from urban areas and 107 victims were from rural areas. They showed statistical differences for gender, ED access, transport, toxins and the time to the ED. In the old group, 61 victims out of 117 were from urban areas and the remaining 56 victims were from rural areas. They showed statistical differences for gender, ED access, toxins and transport. Conclusion: Through the clinical comparison between the acute poisoning victims of urban and rural areas, we exposed the clinical differences between the urban and rural areas, and we concluded that prevention and education for acute poisoning should be generated differently between the two groups.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of a mobile wireless digital automatic blood pressure monitor for clinical use and mobile health (mHealth). In this study, a manual sphygmomanometer and a digital blood pressure monitor were tested in 100 participants in a repetitive and sequential manner to measure blood pressure. The guidelines for measurement used the Korea Food & Drug Administration protocol, which reflects international standards, such as the American National Standard Institution/Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation SP 10: 1992 and the British Hypertension Society protocol. Measurements were generally consistent across observers according to the measured mean ${\pm}SD$, which ranged in $0.1{\pm}2.6mmHg$ for systolic blood pressure (SBP) and $0.5{\pm}2.2mmHg$ for diastolic blood pressure (DBP). For the device and the observer, the difference in average blood pressure (mean${\pm}$SD) was $2.3{\pm}4.7mmHg$ for SBP and $2.0{\pm}4.2mmHg$ for DBP. The SBP and DBP measured in this study showed accurate measurements that satisfied all criteria, including an average difference that did not exceed 5 mmHg and a standard deviation that did not exceed 8 mmHg. The mobile wireless digital blood pressure monitor has the potential for clinical use and managing one's own health.
Purpose: Exposure to blood and body fluids represents a significant occupational risk for nurses. This study was done to identify the level of knowledge of and compliance with blood-borne pathogen prevention of hospital nurses according to clinical experience, and to identify factors affecting compliance with blood-borne pathogen prevention. Methods: A descriptive correlational study was conducted in which self-reported knowledge of and compliance with blood-borne pathogen prevention was assessed. The relationships between variables were examined. Registered nurses who were employed (n=345) were surveyed. Data were analyzed using, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and multiple linear regression. Results: Nurses with more than 5 years experience had greater knowledge of blood-borne pathogen prevention than nurses with less than 5 years experience. However, there was no significant difference in compliance with blood-borne pathogen prevention between the two groups. No significant correlation was found between knowledge and compliance with blood-borne pathogen prevention according to experience standards. In nurses with less than 5 years experience, gender, age, reported exposure to a blood-borne pathogen, and compliance with principles of prevention had a significant impact on compliance with blood-borne pathogen prevention. For nurses with more than 5 years experience, reporting after exposure to blood-borne pathogen was a contributing factor to compliance with blood-borne pathogen prevention. Conclusion: The study results show that to improve the implementation of preventive measures against blood-borne pathogens different strategies are needed, depending on clinical experience of the nurses.

Objective: To gather the opinions of hands-on workers for successful introduction of the Development Safety Update Report (DSUR) according to a five-year comprehensive plan for clinical trial development [Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, 2019]. Methods: We conducted a survey on considerations that industry stakeholders may have related to the enforcement of the DSUR. A questionnaire was distributed among pharmacovigilance specialists from 13 pharmaceutical companies in South Korea on June 4, 2020. The questionnaire comprised two sections: 1) current status of the Drug Safety Data Management System and 2) considerations on the implementation and management of the DSUR. Results: All respondents have agreed the introduction of DSUR is inevitable for regulatory harmonization and safety of trial subject. However, most respondents (85%) felt concern about additional workload with DSUR implementation. They answered that format and operation system of DSUR should be harmonized with those of international standards and authorities need to minimize double burden due to related report. Conclusion: All respondents asserted that domestic DSUR should be harmonized with International Council for Harmonisation of Technical Requirements for Pharmaceuticals for Human Use (ICH) E2F guidelines. Respondents from global companies also suggested regulatory authorities allow DSUR written in English to replace Korean version considering their deadline for submission. Moreover, every respondent agreed regulatory authorities need delicate effort when implementing mandatory submission of DSUR to ensure that even small pharmaceutical companies with no experience in DSUR can comply with the system.
Currently, in the field of spinal surgery around the world, various new technologies have been rapidly developed and applied to patients. The author believes that it is necessary to discuss whether these new technologies are being fully reviewed for efficacy and safety before being applied to patients. To consider this issue, the author analyzed the basic research data and clinical application process of the intradiscal electrothermal therapy, which was developed as a new technology for discogenic pain disease in the 2000s and has been widely used worldwide. As a result, it was found that this procedure has been performed on patients in a state where there is insufficient base research on efficacy and safety. The author judges that this case reveals an essential problem related to the clinical operation of new medical technologies in the field of spine surgery. Therefore, the author believes that in order to minimize the side effects that new medical technology in the field of spinal surgery may have on patients, more full-fledged basic research and higher clinical acceptance standards should be established.
Objectives This systematic review aimed to analyze research about pelvic deviation diagnosis for Chuna manual therapy (CMT) and to review the diagnosis methods, indices, and results of diagnosis. Methods Ten electronic databases were systematically searched up to January 4th 2022. Clinical studies and reviews containing pelvic deviation diagnosis for CMT or using CMT as a treatment of pelvic deviation were selected and evaluated. CMT diagnosis in clinical studies and reviews were isolated and analyzed by 2 independent reviewers. Results Thirteen clinical studies and three reviews were included in the evaluation. X-ray analysis and manual testing were the two main methods used in CMT diagnosis of pelvic deviation. For manual testing in clinical studies, leg length insufficiency testing was the most frequently used measurement index and the most common diagnostic results were anterior and posterior rotation. In the X-ray analysis, Obturator foramen and femur head line were the most frequently used measurement index and the most common diagnostic results were anterior rotation and posterior rotation. Conclusions The systematic review found that manual testing and X-ray analysis were mainly used for the diagnosis of pelvic deviation in CMT among clincial and review articles. As there was little research about diagnosing pelvic deviation in CMT and any existing research presented only low standards of evidence, further research should be updated with using a more standardized approach.

Objectives This study examined recent domestic and international clinical research trends in Gua sha therapy to suggest future direction for research. Methods We used six domestic and international databases (Research Information Sharing Service, Korean studies Information Service System, Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System, PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library) to select clinical studies with an original text in English or Korean published after 2018. Results Finally, 55 studies were selected. Randomized controlled trials accounted for the largest amount with 42 studies. Instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization was the most frequent term referring to Gua sha. Muscle shortening, limited range of motion, and plantar fasciitis were the most common symptoms, with six cases each. Additionally, there were two studies targeting symptoms other than the musculoskeletal system. Conclusions Additional research is needed on the effects of Gua sha therapy on the back of the lower extremities and hip joints, and research is needed on the possibility of their clinical use for diseases or symptoms other than those of the musculoskeletal system. And standards for the terminology of Gua sha and the types and methods of applied interventions are needed.
Objectives: The present study is aimed at comprehending the organizational setup of clinical dental hygienists and to establish an organizational setup that fits their roles. Methods: The survey data of 776 clinical dental hygienists who understood the purpose of the study and agreed to write the questionnaire was utilized. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS Ver. 20.0 program and the significance level was 0.05. Results: The presence of an organizational setup in dental hygienists was surveyed as being higher, with university dental hospital (89.86%) showing the highest. However, the presence of position terms was highest in dental hospitals with 76 subjects (38.78%). Standards for positions most commonly followed hospital regulations in the case of general hospitals (48.42%), whereas they were often based on service period in the case of dental hospitals (48.90%). Salary standards were most commonly determined by service period in all institutions. The job satisfaction of dental hygienists was significantly different according to social status and financial satisfaction depended on having organizational hierarchy for those who work in university dental hospitals. Conclusions: The results of the present study show that dental hygienists who work in organizational setups mostly enjoy high satisfaction in terms of job satisfaction. In other words, the study shows that systemizing the organizational setup of dental hygienists within dental institutions is required, and additional research to achieve efficient human resource management within the organization is necessary as well as institutional utilization of the results of the present study.
Ozone is a gaseous molecule able to kill microorganisms, such as yeast, fungi, bacteria, and protozoa. However, ozone gas is unstable and cannot be used easily. In order to utilize ozone properly and efficiently, plant oil can be employed. Ozone reacts with C-C double bonds of fatty acids, converting to ozonized oil. In this reaction, ozonide is produced within fatty acids and the resulting ozonized oil has various biological functions. In this study, we showed that ozonized oil has antimicrobial activity against fungi and bacteria. To test the antimicrobial activity of ozonized oil, we produced ozonized olive oil. Ozonized olive oil was applied to Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Staphylococcus epidermidis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, and Candida albicans. Antimicrobial activity was assayed using the disk diffusion method following the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards. Minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) were 0.25 mg for S. aureus, 0.5 mg for S. epidermidis, 3.0 mg for P. aeruginosa, and 1.0 mg for E. coli. Gram positive bacteria were more susceptible than Gram negative bacteria. We compared growth inhibition zones against S. aureus and MRSA, showing that the ozonized olive oil was more effective on MRSA than S. aureus. Furthermore, the ozonized olive oil killed C. albicans within an hour. These data suggested that ozonized olive oil could be an alternative drug for MRSA infection and could be utilized as a potent antimicrobial and antifungal substance.
