  • In childhood tuberculosis, it is possible to clearly distinguish among three basic stages: exposure, infection, and disease. The incidence of tuberculosis in children is low compared with that in adults, but latent infection is a major concern because children, who are exposed to Mycobacterium tuberculosis especially early in childhood, are at increased risk of developing the disease. Younger children particularly infants have a high relative risk of miliary or meningeal disease. The clinical manifestations of childhood tuberculosis differ noticeably from those of the disease seen in adults. Adolescents with tuberculosis have different demographic and clinical features from those of adults or children. Tuberculosis in adolescents has become relatively more important as the incidence of infection in childhood has decreased.

  • Kawasaki disease (KD) is an acute febrile illness that is the predominant cause of pediatric acquired heart disease in infants and young children. Because the diagnosis of KD depends on clinical manifestations, incomplete cases are difficult to diagnose, especially in infants younger than 1 year. Incomplete clinical manifestations in infants are related with the development of KD-associated coronary artery abnormalities. Because the diagnosis of infantile KD is difficult and complications are numerous, early suspicion and evaluation are necessary.

  • Diagnosing Hirschprungs disease (HD) is a clinical challenge to pediatric surgeons. The cardinal symptoms are failure of passage of meconium within first 24 hours of life, abdominal distension, and vomiting. The severity of these symptoms and the degree of consitpation vary considerably between patients. HD is suspected on the basis of history and clinical findings and the diagnosis is established by radiological examination, anorectal manometry, and histochemical analysis of biopsy specimens. In this review, the advantages and pitfalls of each diagnostic modality are discussed. And a diagnostic approach utilizing these diagnostic modalities in children with suspicious HD is presented.

  • The aim of this study is to confirm clinical usefulness of MCG data by analyzing korea medical results of heart disease patients. We used the Heart Disease Questionnaire which asks for Qi deficiency-pattern, Blood deficiency-pattern, Yin deficiency-pattern, Yang deficiency-pattern, Qi stasis-pattern, Blood stasis-pattern, Heart heat-pattern, Phlegm-pattern. Magnetocardiography(MCG) is the measurement of magnetic fields emitted by the human heart from small currents by electrically active cells of the heart muscle. Comparing the MCG results and korea medical diagnosis, we showed clinical usefulness of MCG results and korea medical diagnosis.

  • Sarcopenia is the degenerative loss of muscle mass and function with aging. Recently sarcopenia was recognized as a clinical disease by the International Classification of Disease, 10th revision, Clinical Modification. An imbalance between protein synthesis and degradation causes a gradual loss of muscle mass, resulting in a decline of muscle function as a progress of sarcopenia. Many mechanisms involved in the onset of sarcopenia include age-related factors as well as activity-, disease-, and nutrition-related factors. The stage of sarcopenia reflecting the severity of conditions assists clinical management of sarcopenia. It is important that systemic descriptions of the disease conditions include age, sex, and other environmental risk factors as well as levels of physical function. To develop a new therapeutic intervention needed is the detailed understanding of molecular and cellular mechanisms by which apoptosis, autophagy, atrophy, and hypertrophy occur in the muscle stem cells, myotubes, and/or neuromuscular junction. The new strategy to managing sarcopenia will be signal-modulating small molecules, natural compounds, repurposing of old drugs, and muscle-specific microRNAs.

  • Objective: In this care report, we address a case of a Parkinson's disease patient with nausea and vomiting. Methods: A patient was treated with Korean medicine therapies including herbal medication (Hyungbangjihwang-tang, Boikyangwie-tang), acupuncture, and electroacupuncture during 35 days of hospitalization. We evaluated the improvements of symptoms by checking the number of vomiting episodes and the presence of nausea. Results: During 35 days of Korean medicine treatment, there was improvement in patient's symptoms. The frequency of vomiting had decreased, and the nausea had decreased and not appeared for the last 7 days. Conclusions: This study suggested that Korean medicine therapies might be effective in relieving gastrointestinal symptoms of Parkinson's disease.

  • This is a case report of Raynaud's disease improved by Korean medicine treatment. A patient suffering with redness of the hands for more than five years took Yanggyeoksanhwa-tang or Geopungcheonggi-san for 3 months. The change in symptoms was assessed with photographs and evaluating the subjective symptoms of patient. After the 25th treatment, the redness of the hands and the subjective symptoms showed improvement. These findings suggested that Korean medicine treatment could be an effective option for redness of the hands due to Raynaud's disease.

  • The recovery of nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) from respiratory specimens and the number of patients with NTM lung disease have been rapidly increasing in Korea. An early differential diagnosis of NTM lung disease from pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) is important, as the therapeutic regimen differs from that of pulmonary TB, and it is not necessary to track the contacts of patients with NTM lung disease. However, differentiating NTM lung disease from pulmonary TB remains difficult, because the clinical presentations of the two diseases are similar and a definite diagnosis of NTM lung disease based on sputum culture takes time. This review focuses on the changing epidemiology, clinical and radiographic manifestation, and laboratory diagnosis of pulmonary TB and NTM lung disease in Korea.
