  • Background: To confirm verbal violence experience in dental hygiene students and to verify its influence on their self-esteem and career identity. Methods: Data were collected using a structured self-reported questionnaire targeting 180 dental hygiene students at M University. Descriptive statistics, one-way analysis of variance, t-test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis were performed using SPSS WIN 25.0. Results: Older students reported that they experienced verbal violence more frequently during clinical training, especially those who were dissatisfied with clinical training. The students experienced verbal violence more frequently from dental hygienists than from dentists and patients. Dental hygiene students had high self-esteem and career identity. The students who were majorly satisfied with clinical training had higher self-esteem and career identity than those who were dissatisfied. Dental hygiene students had lower self-esteem and career identity when they experience verbal violence more frequently from dentists and dental hygienists during clinical training and clinical practice. Conclusion: An intervention program needs to be developed to prevent verbal violence against dental hygiene students and a strategy to increase their self-esteem and career identity is required.

  • The ultimate goal of career guidance is to help medical students develop a career plan that matches their personal characteristics, allows them to train in their desired subspecialty, and helps them to adapt well to medical practice after graduation. Gachon Medical School has designed a longitudinal career guidance program called GLORI (Gachon Longitudinal Orientation and Career Development), which is based on the outcome of each phase. The program consists of regular courses and portfolio-based career guidance from a mentor professor. In phase 2 (basic medical science), the "Career Seminar" course was developed. This course focuses on self-understanding through a psychological inventory, exploration of postgraduate career paths, and interviews with professors in specialties of interest. In phase 3 (the integration of basic and clinical science), the "Exploring Nonclinical Career Options" course was introduced. This course presents perspectives from doctors who have followed various pioneering career trajectories, including biomedical engineering, medical journalism, writing, public health, health care administration, the pharmaceutical and medical device industries, and other areas. All teaching methods were designed to encourage student participation. The assessment methods are assignment-based, including self-reflective reports and presentations. In addition, a portfolio-based career guidance program is implemented in phases 3 and 4 (clinical clerkship). It is expected that this case study will serve as a practical example for developing comprehensive career guidance programs for medical schools.

  • In light of changes in today's medical environment, whether to dismantle the 50-year-old internship training system in the Republic of Korea is under debate. Although the question remains open, discussions on such issues have drawn attention to the quality of the clinical clerkship and student career advisory programs in medical colleges. The purpose of this study is to analyze the experiential clerkship and career exploration issues. Ensuring excellence of the clerkship and career advisory sessions is an essential responsibility of educational institutions regardless of whether the intern training system is dismantled. Important objectives of the experimental clerkship include reinforcing prerequisites established by law, introducing a student practice license, developing a standardized clinical assessment and student portfolio requirement, and publishing a guidebook for clinical directors. For career exploration, it is necessary to broaden participants' experiences of specialties and to manage the variety of student career guidance programs. It is imperative for the Korean Association of Medical Colleges, in collaboration with medical colleges, to play a leading role in focusing more attention and effort on such issues.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of clinical nurse's emotional intelligence (EI) and core self-evaluation (CSE) on career commitment. Subjects were 462 clinical nurses at two general hospitals in Seoul, and survey was conducted from May to July, 2017. Data were analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients and stepwise multiple regression analysis. The results showed that career commitment was correlated with EI or CSE (r=.28, p<.001; r=.34, p<.001). EI was correlated with CSE (r=.44, p<.001). CSE, spouse status, EI, position, subjective health status, and working department were identified as the factors affecting the clinical nurse's career commitment ($R^2=.21$). To improve career commitment, it is necessary to assess clinical nurse's EI and CSE according to subjective health status, and to be considered marriage, position, and working department in developing a career convergence program.

The subjects of this study were 3rd and 4th grade students attending the Department of Nursing in G city. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation analysis and controlled regression analysis. According to the study results, strengths knowledge(𝛽=.384, p<.001) showed a positive effect on career identity and emotional labor of clinical practice(𝛽=-.370, p<.001) showed a negative effect on career identity. The study model accounted for 45.1% of career identity. These findings suggest that measures to increase strengths knowledge and reduce emotional labor of clinical practice are needed to promote career identity of nursing students.

  • The aim of this study was to provide practical information regarding career exploration to dental hygiene students. This study interviewed 15 senior dental hygienists (graduates of Y University Dental Hygiene program) who have worked in non-clinical fields for about three months from January 14, 2014 to April 28. The most frequently mentioned pieces of information that the senior dental hygienists wanted to convey to dental hygiene students were as followed. Contrary to popular belief, clinical experience was also required in non-clinical fields as the importance of clinical experience was quite often and widely emphasized and applied in such fields. High academic excellence and clinical performance were expected of junior dental hygienists and the senior dental hygienists expressed their hope for their juniors to pioneer new fields and areas of work that a dental hygienist can do. Most of the senior dental hygienists pointed out that to develop technical tools for career exploration as early as possible, such as during undergraduate years and to think about which career path to take, whether it is clinical or academic were significantly important factors for desirable career outcomes. Based on the results of this study, undergraduate dental hygiene students should be provided with opportunities to consider and explore various career paths during their undergraduate years and to communicate with their seniors for hands-on experience-based advices. This would in turn broaden each student's perspective beyond their knowledge or thought about the professional filed of dental hygiene. It was found that the majority of the senior dental hygienists agreed that their clinical experience was the source of their self-competence as a dental hygienist. Our study could be utilized as a valuable resource for future dental hygienists who wish to work in non-clinical fields.
