  • Purpose: This study was conducted to determine the validity and reliability of performance measurement tools based on the nursing process for prevention and management of pressure ulcers, falls and pain. Methods: The performance measurement tools were reviewed by a panel of experts and refined on the basis of the panel's suggestions. The validity of the performance measurement tools was measured by surveying hospital nurses. The reliability of these tools was tested by having nursing experts use the tools in five nursing units to assess nursing performance in prevention and management of pressure ulcers, falls and pain. Results: The performance measurement tools in this study were found to be acceptable as tools to evaluate quality of nursing care in pressure ulcers, falls and pain. The reliability of the performance measurement tools was acceptable. Conclusion: These results indicate that the performance measurement tools developed in this study are valid and reliable instruments to monitor and improve quality of nursing care in prevention and management of pressure ulcers, falls and pain.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the effect of training and implementation of a pediatric peripheral intravenous infusion protocol on the nurses' performance and infusion complication rate. Methods: A quasiexperimental study using a posttest comparison of a one group pretest-time series design was utilized. This method was developed to measure nursing knowledge and performance based on a pediatric peripheral intravenous infusion protocol. To calculate the occurrence rate of complications, the number of complications were divided into the number of intravenous insertions. Results: It was shown that the training developed by the study team in 2015 contributed to nurses' increased knowledge, as well as improved job performance. Furthermore, the implementation of the protocol revealed that the number of peripheral intravenous insertions, an invasive procedure, decreased. Additionally, the nursing workload related to pediatric intravenous infusions was reduced. Conclusion: This protocol may contribute to the improved scientific quality and efficiency of nursing management of peripheral intravenous infusions.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop and test the validity of the standardized Korean nomenclature of Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC), developed by Johnson & Maas at the University of Iowa. The four phases of the study were: (1) translation of the NOC into Korean by the research team, (2) four nursing professors and eight nurses with various clinical backgrounds reviewed each nomenclature taking into consideration definitions and nursing activities. The modified Delphi method was used to determine the most appropriate nomenclature for each term; (3) Twenty four academic and clinical experts in nursing were given a questionnaire to rate each Korean nomenclature using a 5 point Likert scale ranging from very inappropriate to very appropriate; (4) the team determined the most appropriate Korean nomenclature for each class of the NOC. The mean validity score of 190 items was 4.54, but several nursing outcome had a score lower than 4.0. They included 'adherence behavior(3.3)', 'ambulation : walking(3.57)', 'transfer performance (3.57)', 'caregiving endurance potential(3.57)'.

Methods: This is the descriptive research to verify the effectiveness of simulation-based practice education for core skill of maternity nursing. Third year nursing students who have completed maternity nursing related theories and practice have been selected as population. Total of 202 surveys have been used for analysis. Data analysis is done by using SPSS/WIN 18.0. Results: Self-confidence of core skill in maternity nursing is experimental group 4.52 and control group 4.37 score (p<.05). Performance competence in childbirth care is experimental group 4.53 and control group 4.35 score (p<.05). The students who have maternity nursing related clinical practice and core skill practicum experience show high core skill evaluation score. Conclusion: Therefore, it is recommended that current maternity nursing core skill curriculum should be reviewed and improved, and the students should be provided variety of simulation techniques to gain essential knowledge and core nursing skills.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to reorganize the course of basic nursing science (BNS). Methods: The curriculums of 10 leading nursing colleges (domestic and abroad) were analyzed. And a survey was performed on 178 nursing students to identify the perceived level of knowledge, clinical application, the adequacy of class hours and further improvements for the course of BNS. Results: The various levels of credits and percentage were found in the curriculums of other nursing colleges (12-18 credits and 8.6, 13.6%, respectively). The perceived levels of knowledge, clinical application were directly proportional to the adequacy of class hours, and students suggested the increment of class hours and in-depth study. Based on these results, the course of BNS was reorganized as follows: 1) The course of BNS was divided into 2 courses (BNS 1, 2) and total credits were increased to 5 credits. 2) The BNS 1 course was focused on basic concepts to understand human anatomy and physiology. And BNS 2 consisted of detailed structures and functions of human body system. 3) 12 Quizzes were added. Conclusion: The efforts to reorganize the curriculum of BNS might strengthen nursing students' ability to understand nursing phenomena, help student with academic performance and clinical training.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the factors influencing evidence-based fall prevention nursing performance of hospital nurses. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 344 nurses from three general hospitals from January 20 to March 10, 2013. The study instruments included general characteristics of the subjects, and awareness and performance of fall prevention. Data were analyzed by t test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, and multiple regression using SPSS v. 20.0. Results: There were statistically significant differences in awareness and performance according to age, marital status, clinical experiences, workplace, experience of fall prevention education, knowledge of fall prevention, compliance with fall prevention, attention level toward prevention, recognition level of potential falls, nurse responsibility for falls, importance of fall prevention, efforts level for fall prevention, and awareness score of falls prevention. There was a positive correlation among awareness and performance of fall prevention. Based on the multiple regression analysis, compliance with fall prevention, efforts level for fall prevention, and awareness score of falls prevention were significant predictors for performance of fall prevention. The explanation power of the model was 64.1%. Conclusion: The findings revealed the need to develop an effective nursing intervention to improve hospital nurses' performance for fall prevention.

The pre-post test were conducted to compare the differences in diabetic knowledge, clinical nursing competence, practicum satisfaction and communicative competence. The research data for the subject of study was collected from October 21 to November 1, 2013 in 3rd grade 75 nursing students. The student who had received the simulation-based education, did show significant increase in diabetic knowledge(t=-9.684, p<.001), clinical nursing competence(t=-4.173, p<.001), and communicative competence(t=-7.685, p<.001) than before. But, there was no significant different in the practicum satisfaction(t=-1.144, p=.256). Based on the above results, simulation-based education can enhance the nursing knowledge, clinical performance and communication ability of the subjects and can be applied to various education courses.
