  • This study was performed to develop a long-term air pollution dispersion model based on CDM program for use in the personal computer. The model CDM.PC, developmented for use of this study, simplified the plum equation of point pollution source in a windy state and sindless state. We used the classified 8 class stability, 16 wind direction and 4 class wind speed for the computer input climatological data. The plum rise equation is applied for CONCAWE's equation above 2,000 Kcal/sec of the exhaust calorie and Moses-Carson's equation below 2,000Kcal/sec at windy state, and Brigg's equation at calm. The time required is 200 minutes for drawing the air pollution contour for treating ten stacks under the above-stated conditions. It is the weakness of using personal computer that the operation time is longer than a large-size computer. But it strength is that the personal computer is used widely. To compare the treatment results of CDM.PC with TCM, we comfirmed that the shape of $SO_2$ pollution contour is similar but the concentration distribution is quite different because of characteristics of each models. Estimated and measured $SO_2$ concentration were similar, namely, Cest/Cob ratio of CDM.PC and TCM were respectively $0.96 \pm 0.25 (mean\pmS.D)$ and $1.08\pm0.26$.

  • Spatiotemporal precipitation data is one of the primary quantities in hydrological as well as climatological studies. Despite the fact that the estimation of these data has made considerable progress owing to advances in remote sensing, the discrepancy between satellite-derived precipitation product (SPP) data and observed data is still remarkable. This study aims to propose an effective deep learning model (DLM) for bias correction of SPPs. In which TRMM (The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission), CMORPH (CPC Morphing technique), and PERSIANN-CDR (Precipitation Estimation from Remotely Sensed Information using Artificial Neural Networks) are three SPPs with a spatial resolution of 0.25o exploited for bias correction, and APHRODITE (Asian Precipitation - Highly-Resolved Observational Data Integration Towards Evaluation) data is used as a benchmark to evaluate the effectiveness of DLM. We selected the Mekong River Basin as a case study area because it is one of the largest watersheds in the world and spans many countries. The adjusted dataset has demonstrated an impressive performance of DLM in bias correction of SPPs in terms of both spatial and temporal evaluation. The findings of this study indicate that DLM can generate reliable estimates for the gridded satellite-based precipitation bias correction.

  • The climatological study of temperature inversion was conducted at the Tsukuba of Japan during the cold half year, the periods of which were both from October 1981 through March 1982 and from October 1982 through March 1983. Meteorological phenomena were observed to appear both from l0m to 200m above the ground and from the surface to 300hPa. The data collected from those phenomena were analyzed in terms of statistics and investigated from a synoptic point of view. The results are as follow. The dispersion of the surface inversion happens right after sunrise through the whole period. The higher the upper layer is, the later that happens. Up to a height of 200m, the wind speed at a height of 25m has the greatest effect on temperature, but on the other hand the wind speed at a height of l0m has the greatest effect on inversion intensity.

  • Air-drying tests were carried out on green taun (Pometia pinnata f glabra) for 25-mm and 50-mm thickness to elucidate drying characteristics on air-drying rate, time and defects in spring and air-drying calendar. The results of this study were as follows: 1. The air-dried lumber for 25-mm thickness from an initial average moisture content (MC) of $58.3{\pm}3.5$ percent reached 30 percent MC in 17 days, 25 percent MC in 24 days, 20 percent MC in 38 days and 15 percent MC in 84 days. 2. The air-dried lumber for 50-mm thickness from an initial average MC of $59.6{\pm}5.0$ percent reached 30 percent MC in 39 days, 25 percent MC in 55 days and 20 percent MC in 84 days. 3. Air-drying calendar that could be useful in estimating drying times for each month developed by the use of climatological data for Suwon. Total number of effective air-drying days during a year were 243.5 days and the major determinant of the effect air-drying days was temperature. 4. The air-drying rates for 25-mm and 50-mm coated lumber were slight1y slower than those of uncoated lumber. The number and total length of both end checks and surface checks for end coated lumber were less severe than those of uncoated lumber.

  • The Weddell Sea Anomaly (WSA) in the ionosphere is characterized by higher plasma density at night than during the day in the region near the Weddell Sea. According to previous studies on the WSA, it is known to occur mostly in southern summer and has not been reported in other seasons. We have utilized more than 13-year TOPEX TEC measurements in order to study how the WSA varies with seasons and how it changes with solar activity. The TOPEX TEC data have been extensively utilized for the climatological study of the ionosphere due to its excellent spatial and temporal coverage. We investigate the seasonal and solar activity variations of the WSA using four seasonal cases (Mar. equinox, Jun. solstice, Sep, equinox, and Dec. solstice) and two solar activity conditions (F10.7<120 for solar minimum and F10.7>120 for solar maximum conditions) for geomagnetically quiet periods. Our analysis shows that the WSA occurs only in the southern summer hemisphere for low F10.7, as in previous studies, but the WSA occurs all of seasons except for winter when F10.7 is high: it is most prominent during the December solstice (southern summer) and still strong during both equinoxes. The WSA appears to be an extreme case of global longitudinal variations at mid- and high-latitudes.

  • This study was performed to evaluate a applicability of TCM(Texas Climatological Model) model to a industrial area sush as CUNSAN and a possibility to provide necessary informaitons for air quality management. The air pollutants were measured at 6 sampling sites of GUNSAN industrial area from june to july in 1989. The model was checked by comparing the observed data with estimated data. The meteorological data for wind direction and wind speed were obtained from the observatory station in GUNSAN. The results are summarized as follows. 1. Average concentrations of air pollutants at all sampling sites were SO$_{2}$ 0.011-0.019 ppm. NO$_{2}$ 0.012-0.017 ppm. CO 0.6-1.0 ppm. TSP 45.8-64.2 $\mu$g/m$^{3}$. 2. The emission amounts show that point source are in general higher than area source. 3. As a results of correlation analysis, relationship between SO$_{2}$ concentration in the observed value and estimated value showed positive significance.(r = 0.766) 4. The sulfer content of the 1.6% at present to 0.8%, which means a 53.3% reduction. By controlling stack height could be lowered 14.5%, but the effective way of emission control is use of the lower sulfer fuels than controlling stack height. 5. The ratio between SO$_{2}$ contration in the observed value and estimated value showed 1.05. There-fore, the TCM model was quite effective in predicting air quality in GUNSAN industrial area.

  • The purpose of this study is to clarify the effect of mountain-valley wind on heat island formed in urban area which is located around valley mouth. The meteorological observations were carried out over the Dalbi-valley under a clear summer pressure patterns, and some consideration were tried from the results. In order to make clear the climatological characteristics and air-mass modification process of the mountain-valley wind over the valley, the meteorological observations were done simultaneously at two points. The observational points were located at the breast and valley mouth parts, respectively. The results were as follows: First, it was found that the valley wind was observed through the daytime, and it was replaced by a mountain wind after sunset. Second, the heat budget is also investigated with observation data. The sensible heat flux over the breast of Dalbi-valley reached to about $200 W/m^2$ during daytime, which is a little more than one third of net radiation. On the other hand, the sensible heat flux represented negative values during nighttime. But the sensible heat flux over the valley mouth covered by asphalt showed plus value(about $20{\sim}30 W/m^2$) during the nighttime.

  • Climate change which occuring the recent abrupt fluctuations in meteorological and climatological elements is bound, brings about more significant impacts and changes in human life One of the most important problems due to the impacts of climate change tends to have been decreased the food production, which is expected to make crop resources more and more important. Accordingly, agricultural meteorology should also become more important. In this study, the correlation between meteorological elements and root and tuber crops (potatoes and sweet potatoes), which are emergency crops, and meteorological elements were analyzed, and the impacts of climate changes on the production of such crops were examined. This study concludes that agriculture and food resources are important, and suggests that we should prepare for changes in crops, the weaponization of food, and the lack of water resources in the future. The meteorological element and crops element correlation analysis results. Sweet potatoes, which are negatively influenced by climate change, need breeding improvement and cultivation method development, and potatoes, which are positively influenced by climate change, require preparations for climate changes that exceed the climatic limit. The variations of agricultural production contributed to changes in crop production. Therefore, the importance of agricultural meteorology and the food crop industry should be fully recognized to prepare for climate change.

  • The predictability of heavy precipitation over the Korean Peninsula is studied using THORPEX Interactive Grand Global Ensemble (TIGGE) data. The performance of the six ensemble models is compared through the inconsistency (or jumpiness) and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) for MSLP, T850 and H500. Grand Ensemble (GE) of the three best ensemble models (ECMWF, UKMO and CMA) with equal weight and without bias correction is consisted. The jumpiness calculated in this study indicates that the GE is more consistent than each single ensemble model. Brier Score (BS) of precipitation also shows that the GE outperforms. The GE is used for a case study of a heavy rainfall event in Korean Peninsula on 9 July 2009. The probability forecast of precipitation using 90 members of the GE and the percentage of 90 members exceeding 90 percentile in climatological Probability Density Function (PDF) of observed precipitation are calculated. As the GE is excellent in possibility of potential detection of heavy rainfall, GE is more skillful than the single ensemble model and can lead to a heavy rainfall warning in medium-range. If the performance of each single ensemble model is also improved, GE can provide better performance.

  • Climatological informations have not been fully utilized by agricultural research and extension workers in Korea due mainly to inaccessbilty to the archived climate data. This study was initiated to improve access to historical climate data gathered from 72 weather stations of Korea Meteorological Administration for agricultural applications by using a microcomputer-based methodology. The climatological elements include daily values of average, maximum and minimum temperature, relative humidity, average and maximum wind speed, wind direction, evaporation, precipitation, sunshine duration and cloud amount. The menu-driven, user-friendly data retrieval system(CLIDAS) provides quick summaries of the data values on a daily, weekly and monthly basis and selective retrieval of weather records meeting certain user specified critical conditions. Growing degree days and potential evapotranspiration data are derived from the daily climatic data, too. Data reports can be output to the computer screen, a printer or ASCII data files. CLIDAS can be run on any IBM compatible machines with Video Graphics Array card. To run the system with the whole database, more than 50 Mb hard disk space should be available. The system can be easily upgraded for further expansion of functions due to the module-structured design.
