  • To investigate the morphological characteristics of spermatozoa of the grey red-blacked vole (Clethrionomys rufocanus) belongings to the subfamily Cricetinae, subgenus Clethrionomys were examined by scanning and transmission electron microscopes. The sperm head of C. rufocanus was an ax or hatchet in shape with a curved single dorsal hook. The total length of C. regulus sperm was 95.8 ${\mu}m$. The length of sperm head was 7.8 ${\mu}m$, and the tail (88.0 ${\mu}m$) consisted of four major segments: the neck (1.0 ${\mu}m$), middle piece (22.0 ${\mu}m$), and principal piece plus end piece (65.0 ${\mu}m$), respectively. The segmented columns were about 10~12 in number. The number of gyres of mitochondria ranged from about 170 to 178. The post-nuclear cap occupied about a half of nucleus. The equatorial segment is located between the post-nuclear cap segment and acrosomal cap on the nuclear surface. Nos. 1, 5 and 6 of the outer dense fibers were larger than the others. A fibrous sheath and longitudinal column of the principal piece were in evidence, but the fibrous sheath was not seen at the end piece. In conclusion, the morphological structures of sperm head and tail may be useful information to patterning of sperm evolution and classifying of species.

  • The seminiferous epithelium cycle and developmental stages of spermatids in Clethrionomys rufocanus were observed under a light microscope. The seminiferous epithelium cycle was divided into 8 stages. Type Ad spermatogonia appeared through all stages. Type Ap, In, and B spermatogonia appeared in stages I, II, III, and IV. In the first meiosis prophase, the leptotene spermatocytes appeared from stage V, the zygotene spermatocytes in stages I, VI, VII, VIII, the pachytene spermatocytes from stages II to VI, the diplotene spermatocytes in stage VII. The meiotic figures and interkinesis spermatocytes were observed in stage VIII. Developing spermatids were subdivided into 10 steps, based on the morphological characteristics such as the acrosome formation changes in spermatozoa, nucleus, cytoplasm, and spermiation changes. The C. rufocanus spermatocytogenesis and spermiogenesis results displayed similar results with Apodemus agrarius coreae and A. speciosus peninsulae. Considering all the results, the spermatogenesis may be useful information to analyze the differentiation of spermatogenic cells and the breeding season.

  • To examine the process of spermiogenesis in the Korean red-backed vole, Clethrionomys rufocanus regulus, the seminiferous epithelium in the testis, was studied by trasmission electron microscopy, and the following results were obtained based on the morphological characteristics of cell differentiation. 1. According to the fine structural differentiation, spermiogenesis was divided into Golgi, cap, acrosome, maturation and spermiation phases. Besides, these phases were sub-divided into two steps : early and late phases respectively, Thus, the spermiogenesis of Clethrionomys rufocanus regulus was divided into a total of ten steps. 2. In the changes of the chromatin, the chromatin granules began to be condenced in the late Golgi phase, regularizated at maturation phases, and a perfect nucleus of sperm was formed at the spermiation phases. 3. The sperm head had the falciform, and the formative period of sperm tail began to be develop in the early Golgi phase and completed at the spermiation phases. 4. In the morphological features of spermiation phases, the spermatid of early spermiation phase was divided into three types : (1) A-type spermatid contained cytoplasmic droplets in the neck region and middle piece, and the mitochondria was irregular, and arranged around the axoneme. (2) B-type contained cytoplasmic droplet in the middle piece only, and the mitochondria are arranged the center of axoneme regularly, and (3) In the C-type spermatid, the arrangement of mitochondria was regular, and was contained cytoplasmic droplet in the neck region only. In the late spermiation phase, only the sperm head was surrounded by cytoplasm of Sertoli cell or the matured sperm just before the spermiation from the cytoplasm of Sertoli cell.

  • These surveys were conducted for the purpose of fundamental data of environmental ecology to save the damage of the fieldmice at the National Park of Mt. Jiri, shown especially in the 5 areas of Jang-dang, U-pyung, Jung-san-ri, Sea-seok and Dae-sung area from October, 1983 to September, 1984 during which the fieldmice were very active. The results were summarized as follows; 1) Fieldmice observed were 3 species: Clethrionomys rufocanus regulus, Apodemus speciosus peninsulae and Apodemus agrarius coreae. 2) Types of fieldmice hole were of 5 types; around the roots of trees, at fallen trees, between rocks and the ground, on the surface of the slope ground, on the surface of the ground. The holes were found mostly around the trees (33.2%). 3) Inhabitant ratio was the highest at Dae-sung area (22.6%). Breeding was the most active in July. 4) Females found in July at Sea-seok area were the most in the number (6.6%). Males found at U-pyung area were the most in July in the number, at Sea-seok area in May, at Dae-sung area in July (5.4%). 5) The weight ranged between 20.3g and 57.4g. Clethrionomys rufocanus regulus was the heaviest (37.8g), Apodemus speciosus peninsulae the next and Apodemus agrarius coreae the highest. The heaviest were those found at Dae-sung area.
