  • A silicon carbide (SiC) ceramic filter is an effective component for hot flue gas cleaning because of its high collection efficiency, high thermal shock resistance, and excellent mechanical strength. The effect of molding pressure in the production of SiC granular ceramic filters, on the mechanical strength and filtration performance, was investigated in this work. It was found that the ceramic filters produced at molding pressures less than 20 MPa have low mechanical strength and that this result was caused by weak physical interaction among the ceramic powders due to defects and cracks. On the other hand, the filter quality factor(qF), which represents filtration performance of filter media, decreased with increasing the molding pressure due to the drastic increase in pressure drop. Ceramic filter performance factor(qFM), which is the manipulation of maximum mechanical strength and qF, was introduced to consider both mechanical strength and filtration performance in this study. As a result, molding pressure of 30 MPa was desirable to produce a SiC granular ceramic filter based on qFM.

  • This study was conducted on a circulation system which can recycle waste water from EGCS(Exhaust Gas Cleaning System) using a wet scrubber that is used to treat air pollutants from ships. Though we developed a water treatment system that could remove effectively particulate matters and dispersed oil included in cleaning water for Ship Exhaust Gas Recycle System(DePM & DeSOx), we found that it is difficult to treat minutely dispersed oil only by means of centrifugal-typed purifier. Therefore, to this system, we applied a coalescer that coalesces emulsified minute oil particles in the 2nd phase of dispersion state after being filtered through the centrifugal-typed purifier. After we treated cleaning water drained out of Ship Exhaust Gas Recycle System(DePM & DeSOx) by using both purifier and coalescer, we found that particulate matters and dispersed oil were removed more than 55% and 99%, respectively, in comparison with those contained in cleaning water influent. Putting the results together, we conclude that the treated cleaning water can be recycled as normal cleaning water if this cleaning water treatment system is employed by the wet cleaning tower system for the reduction of air pollutants from ships.

  • Flux or solder is used in soldering process for manufacturing electronic parts such as printed circuit boards (PCB). After soldering process, residual flux and solder paste on the parts should be removed since their residuals could cause performance degradation or failure of parts due to their corrosion and electric leakage. Ozone depletion substances such as 1,1,1- trichloroethane (TCE) and HCFC-141b have widely been using for removal of residual flux and solder paste after soldering process In manufacturing of electronic parts until now. In this study, non-aqueous cleaning agents without flash point were developed and applied to industrial field for replacement of cleaning agents with ozone depletion. In order to develop non-aqueous cleaning agents without ethers, esters, fluoride- type solvents. And their physical properties and cleaning abilities were evaluated, and they were applied to industrial fields for cleaning of flux and solder on the PCB. And vacuum distillation apparatus were operated to determine their operating conditions and recycling yields for recycling of used cleaning agents formulated in this study. As a result of physical properties measurement of our formulated cleaning agents, they were expected to have good wetting and penetrating power since their surface tensions were relatively low as 18.0~20.4 dyne/$cm^2$ and their wetting indices are relatively large. And some cleaning agents holding fluoride-type solvents as their components did not have any flash point and they seemed to be safe in their handling and storage. The cleaning experimental results showed that some cleaning agents were better in their cleaning of flux and solder paste than 1,1,1-TCE and HCFC-141b. And industrial application results of the formulated cleaning agents for cleaning PCB indicated that they can be applicable to industry due to their good cleaning capability in comparison with HCFC-141b. The recycling experiments of the used formulated cleaning agents through a vacuum distillation apparatus also showed that their 91.9~97.5% could be recycled with its proper operating conditions.

  • Due to the restrictions of Flash memory such as overwrite limitation and write/erase operational unit differences, block cleaning is required in Flash memory based file systems and known as a key factor on the performance of file systems. In this paper, we identify three parameters, namely utilization, invalidity and uniformity, and analyze how the parameters affect the cost of block cleaning. The analysis show that as uniformity degrades, the cost of block cleaning increases drastically. To overcome this problem, we design a new modification-aware(MODA) page allocation scheme that strives to keep uniformity high by separating frequently-updating data from infrequently-updating data. Real implementation experiments conducted on an embedded system show that the MODA scheme can actually enhance uniformity of Flash memory, which consequently leads to reduce the cost of block cleaning with an average of 123%, compared to the traditional sequential allocation scheme that is used in YAFFS.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate membrane fouling caused by microalgal cells in submerged membrane systems consisting of polymeric and ceramic microfiltration membranes. In this study, one polymeric (flat-sheet, pore size: $0.2{\mu}m$) and two ceramic (flat-sheet, pore size: $0.2{\mu}m$ and cylindrical, pore size: $1{\mu}m$) membranes were used. Physical cleaning was performed with water and air to determine the potential for reversible and irreversible membrane fouling. The study results showed that substantial irreversible membrane fouling (after four filtration cycles, irreversible fouling degree 27% (cleaning with water) and 38% (cleaning with air)) occurs in the polymeric membrane. In cleaning studies performed using water and air on ceramic membranes, it was observed that compressed air was more effective (recovery rate: 87-91%) for membrane cleaning. The harvesting performance of the membranes was examined through critical flux experiments. The critical flux values for polymeric membrane with a pore size of $0.20{\mu}m$ and ceramic membranes with a pore size of $0.20{\mu}m$ and $1{\mu}m$ were ${\leq}95L/m^2hour$, ${\leq}70L/m^2hour$ and ${\leq}55L/m^2hour$, respectively. It was determined that critical flux varies depending on the membrane material and the pore size. To obtain more information on membrane fouling caused by microalgal cells, the characterization of the fouled polymeric membrane was performed. This study concluded that ceramic membranes with a pore size of $0.2-1{\mu}m$ in the submerged membrane system could be efficiently used for microalgae harvesting by cleaning the membrane with compressed air at regular intervals.

  • In this study, a direct contact membrane module was manufactured to be used in a pilot scale membrane distillation process to treat $3m^3/day$ of the digestate produced from anaerobic digestion of livestock manure. In order to investigate the performance of the membrane module, permeate flux was measured with and without spacer inside the module under various condition of temperature difference and cross flow velocity (CFV) through the membrane surfaces. Flux recovery rate after chemical cleaning was also investigated by applying three different cleaning methods. Additionally, thermal energy consumption was theoretically simulated based on actual pilot plant operation conditions. As results, we observed flux of the module with spacer was almost similar to the theoretically predicted value because the installation of spacer reduced the channeling effect inside the module. Under the same operating condition, the permeate flux also increased with increasing temperature difference and CFV. As a result of chemical in-line cleaning using NaOCl and citric acid for the fouled membranes, the recovery rate was 83.7% compared to the initial flux when NaOCl was used alone, and 87% recovery rate was observed when only citric acid was used. However, in the case of using only citric acid, the permeate flux was decreased at a rapid rate. It seemed that a cleaning by NaOCl was more effective to recover the flux of membrane contaminated by the organic matter as compared to a cleaning by citric acid. The total heat energy consumption increased with increasing CFV and temperature difference across the membrane. Thus, further studies should be intensively conducted to obtain a high permeate flux while keeping the energy consumption to a minimum for a practical application of membrane distillation process to treat wastewater.

  • Ballast gravel in a railroad field is often polluted by grease and heavy metals. In this paper, the performances of a dry cleaning method for polluted ballast gravel in which pollutants on the gravel surface can be physically removed was extensively studied. A polluted ballast cleaning device able to shoot emery blasting media onto the surface using compressed air was prepared. Polluted ballast gravel was put into this device for cleaning, with the treatment time varied from 1 to 10 min. The cleaning efficiency of the total petroleum hydrocarbons and heavy metals were studied. The total petroleum hydrocarbon removal efficiency was 70-80% for gravels sampled from a locomotive waiting line, while it was 40-60% for gravels sampled from a turnout area. The heavy metal removal efficiency exceeded 90% for copper and lead, while it was 65-80% for nickel and zinc. This system was found to be effective for the remediation of polluted ballast gravels.

  • We have proposed a novel cleaning technology with organic nanoparticles for high-performance TFT array. The surface of the TFT layer becomes more hydrophilic after cleaning by the nanoparticles. This is concluded from the comparison of contact angles for the samples cleaned by various methods. It is found that the drain currents in the subthreshold and off-state regions are less than those for the TFTs cleaned with conventional method.

  • Washed ballast is used on paved track to earn the high quality track performance. But, the water washing system caused the several environment problems such as the noise, dust and water pollution. Even if the washing is performed, it is difficult to earn the high quality because of the low efficiency of the water washing system. So, we developed the dry cleaning type machine to solve these problems. This machine excludes using the water completely. Especially, it is possible to organize on the conventional ballast cleaning train set.
