This study evaluates the usefulness and capability of surface electrical resistivity technique for identifying the weak zones or subsurface cavities in karst area with limestone formation. Weak zones or cavities near surface can be potentially dangerous and several problems are associated with collapse of roads or buildings accompanied by subsidence phenomena. In this paper, both two and three dimensional resistivity investigation were conducted to investigate subsidence along a road in Yongweol-ri, Muan-gun, South Korea. The results of the resistivity survey using dipole-dipole array provide a clear view of the weathered regolith, the distribution of weak zones or cavities and bedrock. Several low resistivity areas were identified and subsequent drilling led to the discovery of several weak zone or clay-filled underground cavities. The drilling results show excellent correlation with the resistivity images. It is illustrated, the ability of electrical technique to produce high resolution images of subsurface, which are useful for subsidence assessment. Also the results of this study have demonstrated that two and three dimensional electrical resistivity surveys are useful for delineating the subsidence area. Based on resistivity imaging, the map of hazardous zone has been developed.
Kyeonggi Bay, a macrotidal coastal embayment in the Yellow Sea coast of central korea, is fringed by vastly developed tidal flats. About 400 surface sediment samples were collected from the intertidal and subtidal zones of Kyeonggi Bay for a study of the sediment distribution pattern and the surface sediment characteristics of this environment. The kyeonggi Bay surface sediment becomes progressively finer in the shoreward direction, from offshore sand to shoreward silty sand and sandy silt. This shoreward-fining trend is repeated again on the tidal flat and, as a consequence, a grain-size break occurs near the low-water line which separates the intertidal area from the subtidal one. The intertidal and subtidal sediments differ from each other in textural characteristics such as mean grain size and skewness and this can be interpreted to result from differences in hydraulic energy and morphology between the two environments. The mineral and chemical compositions of the Kyeonggi Bay sediments are largely controlled by the sediment grain size. Smectite was nearly absent in the clay mineral assemblage of Kyeonggi Bay sediment. The contents of Co, Cu and Ni were high in the Banweol tidal flat, which suggests a continuous process of accumulation of these metals. the intertidal environment appears to respond rapidly to artificial coastal modifications, the effects of which should be taken into consideration when planning a dam construction or coastal reclamation.

Landslides are known as gravitational mass movements that can carry the flow materials ranging in size from clay to boulders. The various types of landslides are differentiated by rate and depositional features. Indeed, flow characteristics are observed from very slow-moving landslides (e.g., mud slide and mud flow) to very fast-moving landslides (e.g., debris avalanches and debris flows). From a geomechanical point of view, shear-rate-dependent shear strength should be examined in landslides. This paper presents the design of advanced ring-shear apparatus to measure the undrained shear strength of debris flow materials in Korea. As updated from conventional ring-shear apparatus, this apparatus can evaluate the shear strength under different conditions of saturation, drainage and consolidation. We also briefly discussed on the ring shear apparatus for enforcing sealing and rotation control. For the materials with sands and gravels, an undrained ring-shear test was carried out simulating the undrained loading process that takes place in the pre-existing slip surface. We have observed typical evolution of shear strength that found in the literature. This paper presents the research background and expected results from the ring-shear apparatus. At high shear speed, a temporary liquefaction and grain-crushing occurred in the sliding zone may take an important role in the long-runout landslide motion. Strength in rheology can be also determined in post-failure dynamics using ring-shear apparatus and be utilized in debris flow mobility.
The rheological properties of Wyoming bentonites are strongly influenced by the size of particles, cation exchangeable capacity, arrangement and morphology of clay mineral. This paper presents the results of rheological investigations on the Wyoming bentonites aqueous dispersions: two types of particle flocculation were considered. For the Wyoming bentonite, 0g/L and 30g/L NaCl equivalent salinity were added in fresh and salt water to examine the rheological behavior. This paper examined the general rheological characteristics, compatibility of rheological models and correlation between soil structure and change in rheological properties of Wyoming bentonite caused by increasing salinity. From flow curves of bentonites hydrated with fresh water and salt water, the observed general flow behavior is very close to shear thinning with yield stress (or ideal Bingham fluid with yield stress and plastic viscosity). However, the change of shear stress at the same shear rate is clear, particularly for lower shear rate. Well-known rheological models are used to fit the data. There is a good agreement between rheological model and data: Carreau, Herschel-Bulkley and power-law for S=0g/L and bilinear, Herschel-Bulkley and power-law for S=30g/L. It may be due to the fact that the internal structural bonding (strong modification of particle-particle interactions from edge-to-edge and/or edge-to-face to face-to-face) in soil matrix is affected from the evolution of rheological properties with different salinities.

The present study was undertaken to investigate the characteristic of suspended matter in soils of Imha-Dam area by turbidity. Soil sampling was conducted at 5 points of Yeongyang (Turbid area) and 2 points of Cheongsong (Clean area). Experimental analysis was conducted using those samples. The pH of water in the soils at turbid area was higher than that of clean area. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that every sample consists in mainly quartz, illite and feldspar before precipitation. After precipitation for 3 days, the content of quartz and feldspar was decreased and the content of illite was increased at turbid area. The soil of Sinheung (St. 6) at clean area was analyzed only illite. SEM-EDS analysis showed the much content of $SiO_2$ as to every sample before precipitation, but $K_2O$, MgO, $Al_2O_3$, CaO and $Fe2O_3$ with illite was increased after precipitation for 3 days as to every sample. Experimental results exhibited that the major mineral of turbid water was illite at turbid area and clean area.
The geology of the Tumbang Mirih area in the Middle Kalimantan, Indonesia comprises Permian to Carboniferous Pinoh Metamorphic Rocks and Cretaceous Sepauk Plutonics of the Sunda Shield, late Eocene Tanjung Formation, Oligocene Malasan Volcanics, Oligocene to early Miocene Sintang Intrusives and Quaternary alluvium. Results of geochemical exploration and geological mapping exposed obviously that large amounts of gold-bearing quartz veins were found in the whole Tumbang Mirih areas. In many places, gold grains were megascopically detectable from panning products of stream sediments and conglomerate as Quaternary sediments. Even though no remnants of quartz veins are revealed in the most of survey area except Taran region, association of fold grains with layers of quartz pebbles and clays which correspond to the horizon of unconformity or previous river bottom indicates that the gold grains were separated from quartz veins. Along rivers often pebbles and clay layers just over or 10 to 20cm above the current waterlevel are recognized. The occurrence of gold in the conglomeratic layer was frequently confirmed during geochemical exploration. Since the conglomeratic layer was old stream sediments of Quaternary, it can be assumed that deposition of golds was controlled by shape of river floor, speed and shape of river flow, and distance from the source rock. Taran area and northern Takaoi area based on the all data are recommended as the promising areas.
In this study, firing temperature of bricks from the Songsanri tomb complex is interpreted based on the mineralogical and physical changes of soil samples fired at different temperature. When soil samples were burned at 500 to $1,200^{\circ}C$, phase transition of clay minerals affected the mineralogical composition and microstructure, which leaded to alteration of physical features as color, water absorption and porosity. Mineralogical composition can be assumed to vary with the temperature by mineral phase stability, however, color, water absorption, porosity and microstructure had slow change under $1,000^{\circ}C$, and had rapid change from 1,000 to $1,200^{\circ}C$. Upon the mineral and physical alteration of soil, firing temperature of bricks from the Songsanri tomb complex were estimated. Some bricks were over fired at temperature more than $1,200^{\circ}C$, some high-burned bricks were fired from 1,100 to $1,200^{\circ}C$, some bricks were fired by 900 to $1,000^{\circ}C$ and some bricks ere assumed not to be fired. Henceforward mineralogical and physical study can be applied to interpretate more precise firing temperature.
The fluvial Tamna Formation, consisting of conglomerate, sandstone and mudstone layers, is widely distributed in Jeiu Island. Various sizes of quartz crystals were identified from most of the Tamna Formation, including the mudstone layer. XRD analysis also shows that the mudstone layer is composed of various minerals, quartz, plagioclase, K-feldspar, mica, magnetite, hematite, olivine, amphibole, gibbsite, calcite, analcime and clay minerals such as illite, kaolinite, vermiculite, smectite, chlorite, $10{\AA}$-halloysite. There is a tendency showing that the more amount of kaolinite, vermiculite, and chlorite is present where the more amount of quartz crystals is present. It is likely that the main source materials contributing to the Tamna Formation were from the parental rocks containing abundant quartz grains, suggesting that the Tamna Formation could not be related to Jeju volcanic rocks, but possibly to pre-existing basement rocks. Thus, we propose that the Tamna Formation was formed from the materials derived from both pre-existing basement rocks and Jeju volcanic rocks, which were subsequently affected by diagenesis, hydrothermal alteration and weathering process.

Li-bearing hectorite, one member of trioctahedral smectite, occurred large in quantity and confirmed in Turkey western sedimentary boron deposit. Li-bearing hectorite attracted a particular attention because it is one of potential lithium resources. There have been no consensus for the change of hectorite due to heat and acid treatment although it is very important to use in industrial application. In this study, we examined changes of hectorite after heat and acid treatment as well as acid treatement followed by heating. We used clay ores collected in Bigadic deposit, which contained the highest $Li_2O$ content in Turkey boron deposits. Hectorite showed a strong endothermic reaction at $84^{\circ}C$ due to dehydration of absorbed water and interlayer water and a weak endothermic reaction above $600^{\circ}C$ owing to dehydration of crystallization water. The first endothermic reaction accompanied a large weight loss about 6%. Hectorite decomposed into enstatite, cristobalite and amorphous Fe material at $762^{\circ}C$ with exothermic reaction. When hectorite reacted with 3 kinds of 0.1 M acid during 1 hours, it had a good dissolution efficiency with $H_2SO_4{\geq}HCl$ > $HNO_3$ in order.
This study was conducted to detennine the effect of dietary supplements of mineral powder (pegmatite) on the physico-chemical properties of M longissimuss for 24 Hanwoo steers. Each eight Hanwoo steers were randomly allotted to three treatments ; Control $(0\%)$, T1 (supplemented with pegmatite $2.0\%$ and vitamin A $0.2\%)$, T2 (supplemented with pegmatite $2.0\%$). Cooking loss was highest in control, while water holding capacity (WHC) was the highest in T2 (56.38) than the others. However, effect of the diets on meat color was not significantly different (p>0.05) Panel test scores of juiciness, tenderness and flavor of M longissinus were the highest for T1 $(4.6\~5.0)$ between the treatment group (p<0.05). The content of total fatty acid in M longissimus was the highest in T2 $(50.80\%)$ among the treatment group. Palmitic acid and oleic acid were siginificantly higher in T1 and control than those for the others(p<0.05). Unsaturated fatty acid (UFA) was highest in T2 $(58.57\%)$ than the others$(55.09\~55.64\%)$ (p<0.05).
