Fe compounds of volcanic rock samples distributed in the seaside area of Ulleung island were investigated by means of X-ray diffractometry (XRD), X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) and M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectroscopy. We found that samples were typical basic rock which had the total amount of iron compounds including hematite ($\alpha-Fe_2O_3$) varies from 10.6 w% to 14.5 w% depending on the different regions by XRF. The M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectra of the samples were consisted of one sextet due to hemitite and doublets due to $Fe^{3+}$ in various clay mineral and $Fe^{2+}$ in pyroxene $(Ca,Fe,Mg)_2(SiO_4)_2$, ilmenite ($FeTiO_3$) and olivine $(Mg,Fe)_2SiO_4$. The balance state of Fe ions of all samples was chiefly $Fe^{3+}$, so we could find that the volcanic rocks distributed in the seaside area of Ulleung island were made in inland.
The west seacoast has approximately 83% of tidal flat in Korea. Gyeonggi-do and Inchon has 35.1%. This study was carried out to understand depositional environment and properties of tidal deposits that distributed in the Gyeonggi bay. On the basis of observation and description on mineralogical, geochemical, physical properties, detailed sedimentary unit has been respectively distinguished Based on. stratigraphic position, facies and unconformity, the intertidal zones are classified into four sedimentary units, and bedrock over the units has been developed in the order of Unit 4${\rightarrow}$Unit 3${\rightarrow}$Unit 2${\rightarrow}$Unit 1. The intertidal sediment deposits of Gyeonggi Bay were compared with those of west coast. In Cheongra area all strata of Unit 4-Unit 3-Unit 2-Unit 1 appear. In Yeongjong-do Unit 2-Unit 1, in Incheon Bridge and Songdo area Unit 4-Unit 3-Unit 1 are observed. In Daesan area Unit 4-Unit 3-Unit 1 are observed. Average clay mineral content ratio is 8.2% in Cheongra area, 2.9% in Yeongjong Island, 18.4% in Incheon Bridge, 24.6% in Songdo area.

This study has been carried out to reveal the mineralogical compositions, the concentrations of heavy metals, and related factors in the sediments of the Kumho River which is the main tributary of the Nakdong River. Even though this river flows in a short distance, it runs through different geology and industrial areas and can be a good candidate to study different geological and anthropogenic factors affecting the concentrations of heavy metals in the sediment. The major rock-forming minerals were quartz and albite. Minor amount of orthoclase, microcline, and amphybole were also identified. Clay minerals including illite, chlorite, kaolinite were associated with those minerals. In the downstream, no noticeable changes in species and amount of minerals were observed, indicating there is almost no influence on the mineralogical compositions from rock types. The concentrations of heavy metals in the sediments are in the order of Zn > Pb > Cu > Ni > Cr > Co > Cd. Following the downstream, the concentrations of heavy metals generally increase, except Pb. The regional increase of the heavy metal content is well correlated with the location of the tributary. Without changes in mineral compositions, the main factors controlling the heavy metal contents are the locations of pollutant sources. Except Pb and Ni, most of the concentrations of heavy metals were thought to be enriched by the past pollutant sources.
Mineral compositions of the Gyeonggi Bay surface sediments were determined using the high resolution X-ray diffractometer and Siroquant v. 3.0 program. Surface sediments are composed of rock forming minerals (quartz 63.8%, plagioclase 12.9%, alkali feldspar 11.7%, muscovite 4.3%, amphibole 1.2%, biotite 0.5% on average), clay minerals (illite 2.4%, chlorite 1.4%, kaolinite 0.4%) and carbonate minerals (calcite 0.1%, aragonite 0.3%). Coarse sediments are high in the northern, southern and central parts of the study area, whereas fine sediments are high in the northern and southern parts of the central area. Coarse sediments have relatively a high quartz content in the northern part, and relatively high plagioclase and muscovite contents in the southern part of the study area. In the southern part and the northern part of central area, fine sediments have relatively a high illite content, and chlorite and kaolinite contents, respectively.
Geochemical and mineralogical properties of a contamited soil should be taken into account to decide a remediation strategy for a given contaminant because development and optimization of soil remedial technologies are based on geochemical and mineralogical separation techniques. The objective of this study was to investigate the geochemical and mineralogical characteristics of arsenic-contaminated soils. The arsenic-contaminated soil samples were obtained from Chonam gold mine, Gwangyang, Chonnam, Particle size analysis, sequential extraction, and mineralogical analyses were used to characterize geochemical and mineralogical characteristics of the As-contaminated soils. Particle size analyses of the As-contaminated soils showed the soils contained 17-36% sand, 25-54% silt, 9-28% clay and the soil texture were sandy loam, loam, and silt loam. The soil pH ranged from 4.5 to 6.6. The amount of arsenic concentrations from the sequential soil leaching is mainly associated with iron oxides (1 to 75%) and residuals (12 to 91%). Major minerals of sand and silt fractions in the soils were feldspar, kaolinite, mica, and quartz and minor mineral of which is an iron oxide. Major minerals of clay fraction were composed of illite, kaolinite, quartz, and vermiculite. And minor minerals are iron oxide and rutile. The geochemical and mineralogical analyses indicated the arsenic is adsorbed or coprecipitated with iron oxides or phyllosilicate minerals. The results may provide understanding of geochemical and mineralogical characteristics for the site remediation of arsenic-contaminated soils.

Since the mid-twentieth century, geology has gradually evolved as an interdisciplinary context in South Korea. The journal of Economic and Environmental Geology (EEG) has a long history of over 52 years and published interdisciplinary articles based on geology. In this study, we performed a literature review using topic modeling based on Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), an unsupervised machine learning model, to identify geological topics, historical trends (classic topics and emerging topics), and association by analyzing titles, keywords, and abstracts of 2,571 publications in EEG during 1968-2020. The results showed that 8 topics ('petrology and geochemistry', 'hydrology and hydrogeology', 'economic geology', 'volcanology', 'soil contaminant and remediation', 'general and structural geology', 'geophysics and geophysical exploration', and 'clay mineral') were identified in the EEG. Before 1994, classic topics ('economic geology', 'volcanology', and 'general and structure geology') were dominant research trends. After 1994, emerging topics ('hydrology and hydrogeology', 'soil contaminant and remediation', 'clay mineral') have arisen, and its portion has gradually increased. The result of association analysis showed that EEG tends to be more comprehensive based on 'economic geology'. Our results provide understanding of how geological research topics branch out and merge with other fields using a useful literature review tool for geological research in South Korea.
Natural zeolite rock was pulverized and dispersed in water. Clay fraction was collected by sedimentation method. The dominant clay mineral was Clinoptiolite with some Mordenite and Smectite. $P^{32}$ adsorption on Na-zeolite was determined in different ionic strengths using $P^{32}$ isotope by sludge method. The lower the pH of suspension, the longer the contact time, and the more the amount of zeolite, the more inorganic P was adsorbed by Na-zeolite, whereas the more P adsorption per unit gram of zeolite was observed at a 100mg addition than a 200mg in same volume of P-NaCl solution (20ml), indicating that the whole positively charged surface of Na-zeolite was not occupied by inorganic P. Furthermore, the more P adsorption on Na-zeolite was observed in higher ionic strength than in the lower. The maximum P adsorption on Na-zeolite was about 1me/g, and the zero point charge (ZPC) is assumed to be below pH 3.7.
Basic oxygen furnace @OF) slag. a by-pradud of thc iron and steelmaking industry produced in largc quantities in Korea, poszs a subslantial disposal challenge. The BOF slag used in this study was if3 CaCO, in total n e u ~ ~ pnowger and application of 7-8 Mgha' was needed to bring soil pH to 6.5 horn pH 5.0-5.5 m silly clay or clay loam sod wnlained about 10% orgaoic matter. A field assay was conducted to shldg whether BOP slag could bc used as a dolomitic k i n g agent for agricullural soils. Four slag rates (0, 4, 8, 12 Mgha-')were investigated for their effcfect on soil pmperti~, mineral concentralions in leaf tissues of rice and soybean, and yield of the crops. Slag application at 8 Mgha-' rate in paddy field increased pH, Ca Mg, P, Si and Fe wntenl in sail and rice yield by 4.3-14.25 depending an the soil type. h upland field the 8 Mghaf ratc increa3ed pH, Ca and Fe wntent m soil and soybean yield by 36.6%. Thus, BOF slag appears to be a useful liming mate&\ulcornerl for corrzch~gs oil acidity on both paddy and upland ficld soils and for innwing Ca, Mg, P, Si, and Fe wncenhation in plants.
The magnitute of CEC of the reaction product which was produced by the treatment of the natural zeolite power(CEC : 67me/100g) with 3N-NaOH at $80^{\circ}C$ for 30 hours was determined to be about 260me/100g, which was the highest value in all reaction products. By the NaOH-treatment the contents of major clay minerals in natural zeolite was shown to be decreased and it is apparent that new phillipsite was synthesized. Furthermore it is interesting that the phillipsite contents was increased with longer reaction time and higher temperature. After 30 hours treatment the dorminant clay mineral in the reaction product was found to be phillipsite.
The fate of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) in ground water is highly affected by the distribution and property of the carbonaceous materials (CMs) in subsurface sediments. CMs in soils consist of organic matters (e.g., cellulose, fulvic acid, humic acid, humin, etc.) and black carbon such as char, soot, etc. The distribution and property of CMs are governed by source materials and geological evolution (e.g., diagenesis, catagenesis, etc.) of them. In this study, the distribution and property of CMs in subsurface sediments near the Imjin river in the Republic of Korea and HOC sorption property to the subsurface sediments were investigated. The organic carbon contents of sand and clay/silt layers were about 0.35% and 1.37%, respectively. The carbon contents of condensed form of CMs were about 0.13% and 0.45%, respectively. The existence of black carbon was observed using scanning electron microscopes with energy dispersive spectroscopy. The specific surface areas (SSA) of CMs in heavy fraction(HFrCM) measured with N2 were $35-46m^2/g$. However, SSAs of those HFrCM mineral fraction was only $1.6-4.3m^2/g$. The results of thermogravimetric analysis show that the mass loss of HFrCM was significant at $50-200^{\circ}C$ and $350-600^{\circ}C$ due to the degradation of soft form and condensed form of CMs, respectively. The trichloroethylene (TCE) sorption capacities of sand and clay/silt layers were similar to each other, and these values were also similar to oxidzed layer of glacially deposited subsurface sediments of the Chanute Air Force Base (AFB) in Rantoul, Illinois. However, these were 7-8 times lower than TCE sorption capacity of reduced layer of the Chanute AFB sediments. For accurate prediction of the fate of hydrophobic organic contaminants in subsurface sediments, continuous studies on the development of characterization methods for CMs are required.
