  • There are two types of rectangular secondary clarifier at biological nutrient removal (BNR) facility to settle MLSS; conventional activated sludge secondary clarifier and Gould Type I clarifier. In this study, the performances of two types at respective biological nutrient removal facility are compared using weekly operational data. Surface Overflow Rate (SOR), Surface Loading Rate (SLR), Sludge Volume Index (SVI), secondary effluent SS concentration are studied. It has found that Gould Type I has 3.5 times less average secondary effluent SS concentration that is 2.4 mg/L than that of conventional activated sludge secondary clarifier. Both SOR and SLR have shown little effect on secondary effluent SS concentrations at Gould Type I clarifier in contrary that SOR affects the secondary effluent SS concentrations at conventional activated sludge rectangular secondary clarifier. From this study, it is recommended that Gould Type I must be considered for secondary clarifier when BNR plant is designed.

  • Where an activated sludge system needs to be converted to biological nutrient removal(BNR) system, the secondary clarifier must handle higher MLSS from bioreactor since nitrification in BNR system that requires higher SRTs than activated sludge system. Either increase the clarifier size or modification of clarifier physical structure is required to cope with MLSS surge. One of recommended structural modification is the insertion of Lamellar within clarifier. In this study, two clarifiers - one has Lamellar structure inserted and the other does not - were used to compare the effect of Lamellar in solid/liquid separation. Same MLSS was fed to both clarifiers and concentrations of MLSS were varied. With all MLSS concentrations, attachment of MLSS on Lamellar was observed and it was found that detached MLSS caused the higher effluent SS concentrations than that of non-Lamellar clarifier effluent. From these results, Lamellar should not be inserted in clarifier to handle MLSS from BNR processes and the recommendation must be withdrawn.

  • Proper operation of clarifier partly depends on outlet conditions. Effluent has to be uniformly withdrawn to prevent scouring of settled sludge and carry over of settling sludge from the clarifier. In this paper, 3-D numerical model was employed to analyze the flow and settling performance of the rectangular clarifier. There were two simulation conditions of which in the same clarifier, the first one was assumed to have a 11.5 meter weir length and the second has 8.5 meters. Shape, location and placement of the weir structure were different, but both of those outlets meet weir loading design criteria. Simulation results indicate that clarifier with longer weir generally gave strong and unstable currents at the mid-stream where the weir starts while in the clarifier with short and relatively simple weir, uniform and stable flow was observed in most parts of the settling zone, and especially at the weir region. These flow conditions affected settling performance. Effulent SS concentration from clarifier equipped with the long and complicated placement of weir was 24.5 mg/L, but 7.0 mg/L from the clarfieir having short weir length. From this study, it can be concluded that as reported from other studies, weir loading does not guarantee settling performance and 3-D numerical model can be a useful tool for determining and validating outlet structure.

  • One-dimensional flux theory (1DFT) is conventionally used for design of secondary clarifier of wastewater treatment plant. However, the 1DFT cannot describe turbulence, density current, shape parameters of the clarifier. In this study, we optimized the configurations of influent guide baffle and effluent baffle through the simulation using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and its verification by particle image velocity (PIV) test. The energy dissipating inlet (EDI) without influent guide baffle ($0^{\circ}$) showed the best efficiency for minimizing downward velocity under the center well of the clarifier. The lowest velocity distribution around the effluent weir region could be obtained with the McKinney baffle (EB-2). The performances of the influent and effluent baffles were clearly verified by PIV test results.

  • Sedimentation phenomenon of suspended solids occurs by the gravitational force. Pollution particles are separated from slowly flowing wastewater in clarifier. Recently, the sludge suction collector is preferred rather than the scraper type sludge collector due to enhancement of the clarifier efficiency. The sludge suction collector is usually operated by the user's experiences without any scientific and/or technical consideration. To evaluate the performance of sludge suction collector, the three dimensional computer simulation was conducted by the finite volume method. To analyze the performance, the velocity vectors and the suction flow rates of the orifices were investigated. The result showed that each suction flow rate through out the collector was equivalent in the sludge suction collector and the efficiency of suction collector was good to remove high concentrated sludge in clarifier.

  • The Standards for Water Works issued by the Korean government prescribed the insertion of inclined plates in a clarifier to enhance the settling of the suspended solids. In this study, in order to verify the role of the inclined plates, two identical laboratory-scale rectangular clarifiers were constructed and eight inclined plates were inserted into one of the clarifiers and inflow from same source was treated in both the clarifiers. Dye tests revealed that only the front three of the seven slots received the inflow at $0.57m^3/m^2{\cdot}h$, which was the highest SOR (surface overflow rate). Three different SORs, with 12 different SS (suspended solid) concentrations at each overflow rate, were fed to both clarifiers. However, the clarifier with the inclined plates failed to show an improved removal rate for the SS. In order to enable the Boycott effect within the slot, it is suggested that each slot created by the inclined plates receives equalized inflow. Moreover, collision of the inflow with the settled sludge at the bottom of the clarifier has to be avoided. These provisions, which can maximize the Boycott effect, should be added to the Standards for Water Works endorsed by Korean government.

  • The influent and effluent baffle configurations seriously affect the hydraulic characteristics of the secondary clarifier in wastewater treatment plant. In this study, those baffle configurations were optimized by computational fluid dynamics(CFD) analysis and particle image velocity(PIV) test in order to obtain uniform flow in inlet region and to minimize upflow velocity in outlet region of the secondary clarifier. Theoretical analysis using CFD showed that more uniform flow could be accomplished when the influent baffle was located closely to the inlet opening. Effects of effluent baffle configuration on the upflow velocity in the outlet region of the secondary clarifier were analyzed with four types of effluent baffles which are widely adopted for secondary clarifier design. From the CFD analysis, McKinney baffle(EB-2) was estimated to be the most effective for restraining the upflow velocity in the outlet region and these trends were identified by PIV tests. In addition, the McKinney baffle showed the most uniform overflow velocity distribution around the weir.

  • In order to evaluate primary clarifier performance on TSS(Total Suspended solids) removal, four different sampling sets were collected as part of this study; (1) weekly test, (2) the diurnal sampling, (3) the settling velocity distribution sampling. Primary effluent TSS($TSS_{PE}$) and non settleable TSS($TSS_{NON}$) concentrations were averaged 160 and 75.5 mg/L, respectively. These data suggest approximately 85 mg/L TSS can be removed more. Average $TSS_{NON}$, $TSS_{PE}$, and Dispersed TSS(DTSS) concentrations(75.5, 160, and 104 mg/L, respectively) suggest that 28.5 mg/L of TSS difference attributable to poor flocculation, whereas 56 mg/L of TSS difference attributable to poor hydraulics within primary clarifier. In this study, equations for maximum TSS removal efficiency and effluent TSS concentration were suggested and compared with experimented data.
