  • Purpose: This study is to analyze the changes of consumption patterns to diagnose the economic impacts on consumers' market during COVID-19, and to suggest implications to overcome the new social and economic crisis of Jeju Island. Research design, data, and methodology: We collected a set of credit card transaction records issued by BC Card Company from merchants in Jeju Special Self-Governing Province for past 4 years from 2017 to 2020 from the Jeju Data Hub run by Jeju Special Self-Governing Province. The big data contains details of approved credit card transactions including the approval numbers, amount, locations and types of merchants, time and age of users, etc. The researchers summed up amount in monthly basis, transforming big data to small data to analyze the changes of consumption before and after COVID-19. Results: Sales fell sharply in transportation industries including airlines, and overall consumption by age group decreased while the decrease in consumption among the seniors was relatively small. The sales of Yeon-dong and Yongdam-dong in Jeju City also fell significantly compared to other regions. As a result of the paired t-test of all 73 samples in Jeju City, the p-value of the mean consumption of the credit card in 2019 and 2020 is significant, statistically proven that the total consumption amount in the two years is different. Conclusions: We found there are sensitive spots that can be strategically approached based on the changes in consumption patterns by industry, region, and age although most of companies and small businesses have been hit by COVID-19. It is necessary for local companies and for the government to be focusing their support on upgrading services, in order to prevent declining sales and job instability for their employees, creating strategies to retain jobs and prevent customer churn in the face of the crisis. As Jeju Province is highly dependent on the tertiary industry, including tourism, it is suggested to create various strategies to overcome the crisis of the pandemic by constantly monitoring the sales trends of local companies.

  • Drawing on mere exposure effect, we proposed that more exposure to a city, as measured by the number of channels of exposure, would increase familiarity, city image, and intention to visit that city. We conducted a survey of university students in seven Asian countries, asking them about a total of 14 cities, at least one from each of the surveyed countries. Exposure was found to be a significant antecedent and was most powerful when mediated by familiarity. Some types of exposure were stronger than others. Personal exposure, in the form of having visited a city or knowing someone who has, was the strongest type of exposure, with more than double the effect of media exposure. Social media, which is difficult to classify as either personal or media, was assessed separately and had a much smaller effect. The mere exposure effect exists whether the intention to visit a city is related to pleasure (tourism) or business.

  • In the age of global competition, city brand is a significant element for establishing a city's competitiveness. City branding is the process of building a storytelling about cities' content. Among the various contents that differentiate cities, this study seeks to discuss the role of an event and a city brand in the process of city branding based on the city marketing and event tourism literatures. This research uses grounded theory and a case study to examine Seoul exploring the changes in the Hi Seoul Festival and the Hi Seoul city brand over the last two decades. The qualitative research includes a secondary data analysis based on case studies from domestic and foreign regions and their festivals. The analytical results indicted three limitations: inconsistency, a lack of identity, and political leverage. Based on the limitations, this study discusses the importance of the connection between city identity and event content, suggesting implications for moving forward toward a stable Seoul city branding strategy for the Seoul Metropolitan Government.

Traditional ingredients were analyzed with ancient texts for the methods of research. A brand image was made possible utilizing hot spring lore and other regional stories. Asan City's food tourism product willow tofu was made with beans that were given as compensation for building the Onyang temporary palace according to the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty and the willow tree that appears in Sunshin Lee's anecdotes. After the preference test between normal tofu and willow-extract tofu was conducted to measure the product potential of willow tofu, among the sample extracts, 0.04% of the willow extract showed a significant preference. The hot spring tofu-residue cake was baked using tofu residue and vegetable olive oil to substitute for animal oil, such as butter, or margarine. After the sensory test targeting the adults was conducted, both products displayed significant product potential with average scores above 5.0. Willow tree bark, which has antioxidation and anti-inflammatory effects without a bitter taste or strong smell, was proven to bean appropriate ingredient for leached tea. • The present study purposed to examine the possibility of developing historicity inherent in places into tourism resources from the view that the history and location of historical cities have the nature of cultural contents. Previous researches on tourism have been focused on tourist facilities, the development of tourist attractions, economic effects, cultural policies, etc. However, the present study makes a cultural approach to historical cities to explore the meaning of places formed through history and the historicity of places, assuming that the temporal and spatial characteristics of Hanseong-bu can be developed into tourism resources. Major places of Hanseong-bu are classified according to their functions and cultural meanings, and these factors are associated with the geographical structure of the area. By landform and cultural characteristics during the Chosun Dynasty, Hanseong-bu is divided into the central part, the boundary area, and the outskirts. In addition, different elements, which can be developed into tourism resources, are found according to the landscape of Hanseong-bu, the character as a dynastic city, the environs inside the wall, and differences among localities reflecting pre-modem lifestyle.
