  • Objectives: Work-Family Balance (WFB) is a significant social issue in Korea. We examined the effects of employees' burnout on organizational performances by determining the moderating effect of family-friendly organizational culture in firefighter's organization. Methods: To test the hypothesis, data were collected from firefighters who are working at five fire stations in Deajeon and Chungnam province. Based on quantitative survey from 489 respondents, hierarchical regression analyses were performed. Results: The analysis revealed that job burnout had a negative effect on both organizational commitment (OC) and organizational citizen behavior (OCB). Family-Supportive Organization Perception (FSOP) negatively moderated the relationship between burnout and OCB. On the other hand, there was no significant moderating effect of FSOP on the relationship between burnout and OC. Conclusions: This study raises the importance of creating an organizational culture that gives its members a belief that the organization guarantees and supports the work-family balance system.

In the empirical research part of the study, Korean youths' awareness on Confucian values was examined along with its relationship with the sense of citizen ethics. The effect of Confucian values on sense of citizen ethics and their relationship were analyzed to evaluate the receptivity of youths on Confucian ideas and usefulness of sense of citizen ethics. This study investigated a total of final 311 sets of data from male and female students at middle and high schools located in Seoul, Gyeonggi, South Korea. First, to identify the youths' Confucian values and level of sense of citizen ethics, descriptive statistical analysis was conducted. As a result, the survey subjects were found to have, concerning the Confucian values, world view M=3.54, human relations view M=3.66, morality cultivation M=3.76, and social order M=3.45, higher than 3.0 to represent positive levels. Based on this analysis, this study presented specific measures - the necessity and possibility of education on sense of citizen ethics under the theory of human nature. To this end, this study proposed to find an optimal interface between the contemporary sense of citizen ethics and Confucian ethics through the respect for human life and nature, man of virtue as the ideal human model, and united society as a desirable society model.

  • Recently, society's relationship with science is in a critical phase. There was never a time when the issues involving science were more exciting. Many people are deeply uneasy about the safety and ethics of bio-technology. On the other hand, this could be interpreted as a dynamic process in which a new relationship between science and public is reshaping. And in this new relationship citizen participation in science is not a option but a necessity. This article is a case study of 1970's re-combinant DNA debate. Early 1970's bio-technology saw the emergence of an enormously powerful new methodology, recombinant DNA technology. But, at the outset, this technology posed many potential dangers. Concern over possible hazards prompted hot debates and conflict between leading scientists and community, In this process Cambridge Laboratory Experiment Lion Review Board (CERB) is organized by Cambridge City Coun il for assessing the possible risk of recombinant DAN technique. This is one of the first citizen-initiated participation movement in bio-technology. And the debates has come to be a principal focus for many of the most important questions concerning citizen participation in science. This study make a attempt to analyze CERB case. In conclusion, we can confirm the possibility of civil participation in science policy making and decision making from CERB case study. Still, we also realize the limit of CERB case.

  • The purpose of the present study is to examine the effect of civic cooperation with the police on the number of crime that the police must solve by conducting simulation based on system dynamics. The study sets police oriented-policing model and police-citizen cooperative model to investigate the effect of civic cooperation with the police. As a result of the simulation, the police oriented-policing model shows that the number of crime that police must solve is increasing over time, while the police-citizen cooperative model shows that the number of crime that must be solved by the police is keeping it stable in the increase of crimes. Comparing both models, civic cooperation with the police is more effective in reducing or deterring crime than police oriented-policing activity. The study proves that building cooperative relationship between citizens and the police can become a strategic method for controlling crime effectively without a rapid increase in police finance. It is meaningful in terms of presenting a dynamic change of interaction for reducing crimes between civic cooperation with the police and policing activity of the police over time.

  • Background Adherence to healthy diet acts as a key role to modify sedentary lifestyle in real life setting. Constitution type of traditional Korean medicine has been prediagnosed to risk factors of cardiometabolic diseases. This study aims to evaluate the associations between body composition and healthy eating status in Korean adults by their constitution type. Methods Of 4046 participants from Korean Medicine Daejeon Citizen Cohort study, Korean Medicine Daejeon Citizen Cohort (KDCC) study were included for analysis. Demographic, health-related behaviors and Korean Medicine (KM) type were surveyed based on a general health-related questionnaire. Anthropometric measurements and dietary factors by using Korean Healthy Eating Index (KHEI) were assessed only in the half of the original participants. Results 50.8% of Taeeum was observed from eligible 1967 participants (66.7%, women). The highest KHEI score was observed in soyang group (52.0±0.3, p=0.006) compared to other two groups. In taeeum group, lower appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM)(%)(Taeeum: 38.7±0.1 vs. Soeum/Soyang: 39.2±0.1, p < 0.05), and higher percent of body fat (PBF)(%) (Taeeum: 32.9±0.2 vs. Soeum/Soyang: 29.0±0.2, p < 0.05) by the lowest tertile (T1) of the KHEI score, respectively. When the KHEI score increased by 1 point in taeeum group, a positive relationship was observed, which increased by 0.015% of ASM, however, a negatively related to in which body fat mass (BFM) decreased by 0.022 kg and PBF decreased by 0.024%. • Background: Happiness is one of the most important indicators of health, wellbeing, and quality of life among older adults. The objective of the study was to investigate factors associated with happiness among senior citizens residing in rural areas using the 2017 National Survey of Older Koreans. Methods: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted among 3,149 senior citizens living in rural areas using secondary data from the 2017 National Survey of Older Koreans. Happiness was measured by a single question and responses were recorded dichotomously. Descriptive and inferential statistics were computed at a 5% level of significance. Results: In all, 64.5% of the participants considered themselves as happy most of the time in the last 1 week. In the study, socio-demographic factors did not predict happiness except age. Satisfaction with a health status, financial situation, relationship with children, cultural satisfaction, and satisfaction with friends and society were positively associated with happiness among senior citizens residing in rural areas of Korea. Odds of reporting happiness were higher among those who traveled in the last 1 year, visited elderly welfare centers, and were involved in voluntary work than among those who did not. Conclusion: Happiness among senior citizen was significantly associated with life satisfaction with regard to health, finance, relationship with family, friends and society, and social activity participation.
