  • The analysis of citing and cited phrases provides an opportunity to enhance search-centric academic information services. However, most current studies focus only on citation analysis among academic associations, researchers, and articles, making it challenging to develop higher citation-based information services. This study proposes citation analysis service methods using citing and cited phrases. First, to verify the feasibility of suggested services, we have collected the most highly cited articles with specific domain terms and followed their citing relationship; after that, we found formal citation types and ratios in the original articles. And we conducted structural analysis, especially with three topics, "Deep Learning," "Green Energy," and "Aging," and then structurally illustrates the citation characteristics of related articles. Finally, we collected four most cited articles and all their citing ones for each subject from Google Scholar and analyzed the ratio of citation types and citation spread. We hope that various citation analysis studies and information services can be further developed based on our discussion for designing better information services.

  • Today, citation index information is used as an outcome scale of spreading technology and encouraging research. Article citation information is an important factor to determine the authority of the relevant author. Google Scholar uses the article citation information to organize academic article search results with a rank algorithm. For an accurate analysis of such important citation index information, large amounts of bibliographic data are required. Therefore, this study aims to build a fast and efficient system for large amounts of bibliographic data, and to design and develop a system for quickly analyzing cited information for that data. This study also aims to use and analyze citation data to be a basic element for providing various advanced services to the academic article search system.

  • A citation analysis utilizes the relations among citations and is the most popular bibliometric method. This analysis is based on 1) the evaluation by paper, journal and researcher of the research output, 2) the identification of emerging research topics, 3) the production of a map of the intellectual structure of the research domain and 4) various services for academic information. However, this approach has a limitation in that a citation is treated in a very simple manner, even though the purpose of citation can vary greatly. To address this problem, new approaches have been studied that take into account the citation context. This research separates the citations according to the citation functions and tries to conduct an analysis according to the newly classified citations. Furthermore, research on the citation summarization and visualization based on both the citation context and the citation function of the citations was also attempted. However, since there are very few studies related to citation context in South Korea, more research and development is needed in this area. This study analyzes the status of the research in terms of the citation context. For this, we utilized social network analysis methods.

  • In this study, we testify that network structural attributes of a citation network can explain other aspects of journal citation behaviors and the importances of journals. And we also testify various citation impact indicators of journals including JIF and h-index to verify the difference among them especially focused on their ability to explain an institution's local features of citation behaviors. An institutional citation network is derived using the articles published in 2006-2007 by biotechnology faculties of Y University. And various journal citation impact indicators including JIF, SJR, h-index, EigenFactor, JII are gathered from different service sites such as Web of Science, SCImago, EigenFactor.com, Journal-Ranking.com. As a results, we can explain the institution's 5 research domains with inter-citation network. And we find that the co-citation network structural features can show explanations on the patterns of institutional journal citation behavior different from the simple cited frequency of the institution or patterns based on general citation indicators. Also We find that journal ranks with various citation indicators have differences and it implies that total-based indices, average-based indices, and hybrid index(h-index) explain different aspects of journal citation pattern. We also reveal that the coverage of citation DB doesn't be a matter in the journal ranking. Analyzing the citation networks derived from an institution's research outputs can be a useful and effective method in developing several library services.

  • This research uses a new approach to analyze the extent of influence journal papers have on the progress of varied research fields by estimation of subject-based influence on research other than impact factor that relies on citation index. It is initiated with the hypothesis that earlier established citation relations between journal and citing paper, which reveals the research field that contains the highest citation index and hence has received the greatest contribution from a particular journal, would have inconsistent contribution to the research field over the year of journal publication. The target research is primarily 128 journal papers and 4,123 citing papers from Information Systems Research published in the years 2001, 2004, 2007, and 2010. The characteristics of citation history and hallmarks of research field of citing papers were studied and analysis on significant distinction between citing fields based on the year of publication was performed. The analysis results show the order of citation rate to be highest from Computer Science (2,221 cases), Business & Economics (2,191 cases), and Information Science & Library Science (1,901 cases). The citation history of the journal, nonetheless, indicates increase in citation during 2-3 years after the earliest publication till it achieves constant citation. The statistical analysis shows significant variation in citing fields in accordance with the publication year; especially in 2010, journal contribution has increased in the fields of Business & Economics, Operations Research & Management Science, and Health Care Sciences & Services but, however, is reduced in Education & Educational Research and Social Sciences - Other Topics.

  • For the construction of accurate scientific citation information, author disambiguation should be primarily resolved. This study proposes a method that utilizes URI(Uniform Resource Identifier) to create precise author citation networks. The adoption of URIs for representing authors and papers in this study enables us to maintain the integrity of constantly changing citation information and to guarantee the accessibility to the right literature. In experiments, we extracted 2,872 author-centric citation relation pairs from recent major IT-related proceedings written in Korean. From those, 135 citation network groups were discovered. The findings of this study are expected to be applied to a variety of researcher network services and scientific information portal services.

  • Scholarly science citation data is typically of large volume and consists of a variety of data. Moreover, the volume of data is increasing more and more. Therefore, there are some requirements to store and manage the data efficiently and Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI) develops Korea Science Citation Database (KSCD) which manage and serve very large-volume of korea science technique information including citation data. However, current services based on KSCD are not enough for various users. Thus, it is important issue to offer a variety of services using KSCD. For example, if a user searches articles described by a specific author, then a user may want to find not only the articles cited by a certain author but also those articles that study similar topics. However, it is not always easy to provide these services with citation data. Therefore, this paper surveys studies about services using citation data in order to find approaches for better utilizing KSCD. Especially, this paper considers data mining techniques, because data mining is one of the main techniques to extracting semantic information from big data. Therefore, this paper discusses methods for utilizing large volume of KSCD based on data mining technique.

  • Citing literature is a very important activity for scholars in writing articles. Many publishers and libraries build citation databases and provide citation reports on scholarly journals. Cited-by linking is a service representing what an article cites and how many times it cites a specific article within a journal database. Recently, information services based on DOIs (Digital Object Identifiers) have been increasing in number. CrossRef, a non-profit organization for the DOI registration agency, maintains the DOI system and provides the cited-by linking service. Recently, the number of Korean journals adopting DOI is also rapidly increasing. The Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI) supports Korean learned societies in DOI related activities in collaboration with CrossRef. This study analyzes cited patterns of Korean DOI journal articles using CrossRef's cited-by linking data and a Korean journal citation database. This analysis has been performed in terms of publication country and the language of journals citing Korean journal articles. The results show that DOI, SCI(E) (Science Citation Index (Expanded)), and English journals are more likely to be cited internationally.
