  • The interaction of incident monochromatic waves with a bottom-mounted vertical porous circular cylinder is investigated using the framework of the three-dimensional linear potential theory. The porosity of the circular cylinder is uniform vertically but varies in the circumferential direction. By adjusting the porosities of the circular cylinder, both the wave blocking performance of a porous semi-circular breakwater and the wave responses inside a circular harbor with an entrance are applied as calculation examples. It is found that the reflected waves, wave run-up, and wave forces are significantly reduced due to wall porosity, which are positive factors for a breakwater, and the amplification factor of a circular harbor at resonant frequencies is greatly reduced by a porous sidewall.

  • Rubber mounts so called grommets and pipes are two major paths of vibration transmission from a compressor, an important vibration source in an air conditioner, to the whole unit. A procedure of configuring the suction and discharge pipes of the compressor was developed in this paper so as to reduce the vibration transmission through the pipes as well as the grommets. Through investigating the effects of shapes and connecting disrections of pipe elements on vibration transmission, a guideline to configure the pipe layout, which enables to reduce vibration transmission, was proposed. The initial pipe layout by the guideline was optimized with the objective function, minimization of boty vibration transmission and the cost, and with the constraints to yield the final dimensions of the pipes. The procedure not only minimizes the transmitted force to the circumferential devices but enables to eliminate rubber blocks or dampers, which are generally used to avoid resonances of the pipe system.

  • When a crack is produced in a concrete structure, a micro crack zone of fracture process zone (FPZ) appears at the crack tip. To investigate the behaviour of this the micro crack zone, nonlinear fracture mechanics (NLFM) must be applied. However, when a massive concrete structure such as a concrete gravity dam is considered, the micro crack zone can be neglected and the structure can be assumed to have linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) behaviour. This study is divided into two main topics : (1) Calculating stress intensity factor (SIF) at the crack tip by surface integral method and (2) Investigating the propagation of the initial crack. If the initial crack propagates, the angle of the propagation is calculated by using maximum circumferential tensile strength theory. This study, also, contains the effects of body forces and water pressures on the crack face.

  • Basic equations and its solution procedure are derived for the analysis of an annular pump seal in which the rotor has a large static displacement from the centered position. The Bulk-flow is assumed for a control volume set in the seal clearance and the flow is assumed to be completely turbulent in axial and circumferential direction. Moody's wall-friction-factor formula is used for the calculation of wall shear stresses in the control volume. For the reaction force developed by the seal, linearized zeroth-order and first-order perturbation equations are developed for small motion about an eccentric position. Flow variables are expanded by using Fourier series for the solution procedure. Integration of the resultant first-order pressure distribution along and around the seal defines the 12 elements of rotordynamic coefficients of the eccentric annular pump seal. The results of leakage and rotordynamic coefficients are presented and compared with the Marquette's experimental results and the San Andres' theoretical analysis.

  • The mechanism of wind-induced ovalling vibrations of cylindrical shells is numerically investigated by using a vortex method. The subject of this paper is limited to a two-dimensional structure in the subcritical regime. The aerodynamic stability of the ovalling vibrations in the second to fourth circumferential modes is discussed, based on the results of a forced-vibration test. In the analysis, two modal configurations are considered; one is symmetric and the other is anti-symmetric with respect to a diameter parallel to the flow direction. The unsteady pressures acting on a vibrating cylinder are simulated and the work done by them for one cycle of a harmonic motion is computed. The effects of a splitter plate on the flow around the cylinder as well as on the aerodynamic stability of the ovalling vibrations are also discussed. The consideration on the mechanism of ovalling vibrations is verified by the results of a free-vibration test.

  • This paper describes the design process and the test of split wheel-mounted brake discs for high speed train with maximum speed 180km/h. A disc set composed 2 disc rings and individual rings are partitioned into 3 pieces with the same circumferential angle. Because partitioned disc rigs are exposed to severe centrifugal force as the vehicle speed increase, finite element analyses used in the design process to ensure mechanical safety. A prototype was verified its mechanical safety through the spin test up to 250km/h. 2 prototypes for 1 wheelset are mounted to Korean Tilting Train(TTX) and have been running over 15,000km

  • The centrifugal force acting on a rotating disk creates the in-plane loads in radial and circumferential directions. Application of fiber reinforced composite materials to the rotating disk can satisfy the demand for the increment of its rotating speed. However, the existing researches have been confined to lamina disks. This paper deals with the stress and vibration analysis of rotating laminated composite disks. The maximum strain theory for failure criterion is applied to determine the strength of the laminate disk from which the maximum allowable speed is obtained. Dynamic equation is formulated in order to calculate the natural frequency and critical speed for rotating laminated disks. The Galerkin method is applied to obtain the series solution. The numerical results are given for the cross-ply laminated composite disks.

  • The basic equations are derived for the analysis of a stepped labyrinth gas seal which are generally used in high performance compressors, gas turbines, and steam turbines. The Bulk-flow is assumed for a single cavity control volume and the flow is assumed to be completely turbulent in circumferential direction. Moody's wall-friction-factor formula is used for the calculation of wall shear stresses in the single cavity control volume. For the reaction force developed by the seal, linearized zeroth-order and first-order perturbation equations are developed for small motion about a centered position. Integration of the resultant first-order pressure distribution along and around the seal defines the rotordynamic coefficients of the stepped labyrinth gas seal. The leakage and rotordynamic characteristic results of the stepped labyrinth gas seal are presented and compared with Scharrer's theoretical analysis using Blasius' wall-friction-factor formula.

  • Ratcheting behavior of $90^{\circ}$ elbow piping subject to internal pressure 20 MPa and reversed bending 20 kN was investigated using experimental method. The maximum ratcheting strain was found in the circumferential direction of intrados. Ratcheting strain at flanks was also very large. Moreover, the effect of temperature on ratcheting strain of $90^{\circ}$ elbow piping was studied through finite element analysis, and the results were compared with room condition ($25^{\circ}$). The results revealed that ratcheting strain of $90^{\circ}$ elbow piping increased with increasing temperature. Ratcheting boundary of $90^{\circ}$ elbow piping was determined by Chaboche model combined with C-TDF method. The results revealed that there was no relationship between the dimensionless form of ratcheting boundary and temperature.

  • The governing equations are derived for the analysis of a stepped labyrinth gas seal generally used in high performance compressors, gas turbines, and steam turbines. The bulk-flow is assumed for a single cavity control volume set up in a stepped labyrinth cavity and the flow is assumed to be completely turbulent in the circumferential direction. The Moodys wall-friction-factor model is used for the calculation of wall shear stresses in the single cavity control volume. For the reaction force developed by the stepped labyrinth gas seal, linearized zeroth-order and first-order perturbation equations are developed for small motion about a centered position. Integration of the resultant first-order pressure distribution along and around the seal defines the rotordynamic coefficients of the stepped labyrinth gas seal. The resulting leakage and rotordynamic characteristics of the stepped labyrinth gas seal are presented and compared with Scharrers theoretical analysis using Blasius wall-friction-factor model. The present analysis shows a good qualitative agreement of leakage characteristics with Scharrers analysis, but underpredicts by about 20%. For the rotordynamic coefficients, the present analysis generally yields smaller predictied values compared with Scharrers analysis.
