The effect of oscillating on the unsteady laminar flow past a circular cylinder is numerically investigated in the present study. Our study is to analyze the vortex formation behind a circular cylinder for different rotary oscillation conditions. And then we are study to portray the unsteady dynamics of wake flows. We decide lock-on region by observing the phase switching phenomena We classify the vortex formation patterns in the primary lock-on region The present study is to identify the quasi-periodic state around lock-on region. At the boundary between lock-on and non-lock-on the shedding frequency is bifurcated. After the bifurcation, one frequency follow the forcing frequency ($S_f$) and the other returns to the natural shedding frequency ($St_0$). In the quasi-periodic state, the variation of magnitudes and relevant phase changes of $C_L$ with forcing phase are examined.
The present study has numerically investigated two-dimensional laminar flow over a circular cylinder with a uniform planar shear, where the free-stream velocity varies linearly across the cylinder. Numerical simulations using the immersed boundary method are performed for the ranges of $50{\le}Re{\le}160,\;K{\le}0.2$, and B=0.1 and 0.05 where Re, K and B are the Reynolds number, the non-dimensionalized velocity gradient and the blockage ratio, respectively. Results show that the flow depends significantly on B as well as Re and K. It is found, especially, that the blockage effect accounts for some causes of apparent discrepancies among previous studies on the flow. With increasing K, the vortex shedding frequency and the mean drag stay nearly constant or slightly decrease whereas the mean lift, acting from the higher-velocity side to the lower, increases linearly. Flow statistics as well as instantaneous flow fields are presented to identify the characteristics of the flow and then to understand the underlying mechanism.
The flow structures of turbulent shear layer behind oil fences with different tip configurations were investigated experimentally using flow visualization and PIV velocity field measurement. An oil fence was installed in a circulating water channel and the flow structure around the fence tip was mainly analyzed in this experiment. The four tip configurations tested in this experiment are knife edge; semi-circle edge, circular edge and rectangular edge. The 300 instantaneous velocity fields were measured using the single-frame PIV system and they were ensemble averaged to give the mean velocity field and spatial distribution of turbulent statistics. Free stream velocity was fixed at 10ms/sec and the corresponding Reynolds number based on the fence height was Re=4000. As a result, for the oil fence with rectangular edge, the streamwise velocity component was decreased. On the other hand it was increased for the oil fence with circular edge. For all four fences tested in this study, general flow pattern of the lower shear layer is analogous but the upper layer shows difference depending on the tip configurations. The oil fence with circular edge has more diffusive upper shear layer than that of the others. The shear layer of the oil fence with rectangular edge has relatively thin thickness. The oil fence with circular edge was found to be proper shape for tandem fence.

This study focuses on spatial/temporal relationship deaths caused by Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD). Several studies have found links between these two diseases. By looking for clusters in mortality of Alcohol and HIV related deaths this study contributes to the field through the identification of exact spatial/temporal time of high and low occurrence risks based on the observed over the expected number of deaths. This study does not provide political or social interpretations of the data. It merely wants to show where clusters are found.
The purpose of statistical analyses of array-CGH experiment data is to divide the whole genome into regions of equal copy number, to quantify the copy number in each region and finally to evaluate its significance of being different from two. Several statistical procedures have been proposed which include the circular binary segmentation, and a Gaussian based local regression for detecting break points (GLAD) by estimating a piecewise constant function. We propose in this note a penalized spline regression and its simultaneous confidence band(SCB) approach to evaluate the statistical significance of regions of genetic gain/loss. The region of which the simultaneous confidence band stays above 0 or below 0 can be considered as a region of genetic gain or loss. We compare the performance of the SCB procedure with GLAD and hidden Markov model approaches through a simulation study in which the data were generated from AR(1) and AR(2) models to reflect spatial dependence of the array-CGH data in addition to the independence model. We found that the SCB method is more sensitive in detecting the low level copy number alterations.
In this study, the effects of freestream turbulence intensity on laminar-turbulent transition of separated shear layers in the wake of a circular cylinder are investigated using an immersed boundary method and LES. It is shown that the present numerical results without freestream turbulence for Re=3,900 based on bulk mean velocity and the cylinder diameter are in good agreement with other authors' experimental observations and numerical results, verifying our numerical methodology. Then a 'prescribed power spectrum' method is imposed to generate isotropic turbulence at the inlet of the computational domain at each time step. The principal effects of freestream turbulence intensity on flow statistics are investigated for Re=3,900. Statistical study reveals that the Reynolds stresses in the near-wake region gradually increase, and transition occurs further upstream, as the turbulence intensity increases. On the other hand, the bubble size behind the cylinder decreases as the turbulence intensity increases, which indicates that the freestream turbulence helps mean velocity be quickly recovered.
Two-dimensional flow over a pair of circular cylinders in side-by-side arrangements at low Reynolds numbers has been numerically investigated in this study. Numerical simulations are performed, using the immersed boundary method, in the ranges of $40{\leq}Re{\leq}160$ and $g^{\ast}<5$, where Re and $g^{\ast}$ are, respectively, the Reynolds number and the spacing between the two cylinder surfaces divided by the cylinder diameter. Results show that total six kinds of wake patterns are observed over the ranges: antiphase-synchronized, inphase-synchronized, flip-flopping, single bluff-body, deflected, and steady wake patterns. It is found that the characteristics of the flow significantly depends both on the Reynolds number and gap spacing, with the latter much stronger than the former. Instantaneous flow fields, time traces, flow statistics and so on are presented to identify the wake patterns and then to understand the underlying mechanism. It is remarkable that, for the deflected wake pattern, the gap flow is deflected invariably to the cylinder of higher drag coefficient and the deflection way does not change at all. Moreover, the bifurcation phenomena where either of two wake patterns can occur are found at certain flow conditions.
Two-dimensional flow over a pair of circular cylinders in a side-by-side arrangement at low Reynolds numbers has been numerically investigated in this study Numerical simulations are performed, using the immersed boundary method, for the ranges of 40$\leq$Re$\leq$160 and $g^{*}$<5, where Re and $g^{*}$ are, respectively, the Reynolds number and the spacing between the two cylinder surfaces divided by the cylinder diameter. Variations in phenotypic traits are important for onion genetic improvement. The aim of this study was to identify the phenotypic traits of temporary genetic resources and the best accessions for the development of onion breeding programs. Sixteen phenotypic traits of 79 onion accessions were studied. The descriptive statistics of phenotypic traits exhibited a high variation in onion accessions. Among the 79 evaluated accessions, 64.55% had a large bulb neck width and 44.30% had a circular bulb shape. Principal component analysis showed that six principal components (PCs) accounted for 72.65% of the total variation. The main factors contributing to PC1 were bulb weight, equatorial and bulb polar diameters, plant height, and degree of splitting into bulblets, whereas those contributing to PC2 were the bulb color of the epidermal cells of the fleshy scales and color of the dry skin on the bulb. The accessions were classified into three groups-clusters 1, 2, and 3. Cluster 2 accessions were the most suitable for selecting large and circular bulb-shaped onion cultivars. The phenotypic variation observed in this study may help to select potential accessions for breeding new onion cultivars.
