Beam-column behavior of concrete filled steel tubes

  • In the present investigation the experimental and theoretical flexural and compressive behavior of short tubular steel columns filled with plain concrete and fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) was examined. For a given length of the members, the effects of different geometry and dimensions of the transverse cross-section (square and circular) were investigated. Constituent materials were characterized through direct tensile tests on steel coupons and through compressive and split tension tests on concrete cylinders. Load-axial shortening and load-deflection curves were recorded for unfilled and composite members. Finally, simplified expressions for the calculus of the load-deflection curves based on the cross-section analysis were given and the ultimate load of short columns was predicted.

  • Some as-built drawings in national roadway bridges in Korea were examined. There are many bridge piers, whose aspect ratios are in the vicinity of 2.5. These columns are expected to do shear-flexure behaviour and have large scale effect between full and reduced scale model. In the study, full and 1/2 scale model tests on the shear-flexure behaviour columns were carried out.   • One of the methods improving the seismic behavior of a structure is the frame with reduced beam section (RBS) which cuts a segment of flanges of the beam near the beam-to-column connection so that the section with reduced flanges has smaller flexural strength than the beam end. It is difficult to analyze the RBS frame because RBS portion has circular-cut type flange. And inelastic response of the steel frame with the RBS is very sensitive to the RBS model. In this paper, the analytical models of RBS portion are investigated and the results of the inelastic analysis for RBS analytical models are compared and then the analytical model for RBS is determined based on the results of inelastic analysis. Inelastic behavior of the RBS frame and its dynamic characteristics are investigated for selected analytical model of RBS.

  • This study is to develop detailing guidelines based on ductility demand for reinforced concrete bridge columns in areas of low to moderate seismicity. The current seismic design criteria of the Korea Design Specifications for Highway Bridge (KDSHB 2005) adopted the seismic design concept and requirements of the AASHTO specifications. In order to obtain full ductile behavior under seismic loads, i.e. when applied seismic force is larger than design flexural strength of column section, a response modification factor (R=3 or 5) is used. In moderate seismicity regions, however, adopting the full ductility design concept sometimes results in construction problems due to reinforcement congestion. The objective of this paper is to suggest a new simplified seismic design of reinforced concrete bridge columns for moderate seismicity regions.

  • The strength and ductile capacity of reinforced concrete column can be improved by confinement using transverse reinforcement. Variety stress-strain models about the reinforced concrete confined by transverse reinforcement has been proposed. In this paper, parameters which effect to the ultimate confinement stress of circular cylinder confined by high strength transverse steel is examined. And the possion's ratio equation is proposed by analysis of strain between concrete and transverse reinforcement.

  • In this study, we present the theoretical, numerical and experimental results of the sink flow from a rotating, circular tank Strikingly enough, when the upper free surface was set with no-slip boundary conditions, the Ekman boundary-layer develops not only above the bottom surface but under the free surface. The sink fluid is coming from the two Ekman layers, and the mass transfer from the bulk, inviscid region is dependent on the rotational speed. It is also remarkable to see that all the fluid gathered along the axis flows through a rapidly rotating fluid column with almost the same size as the hole.

  • Since the occurrence of 1995 Kobe earthquake, there have been much concern about seismic design for various infrastructures, inclusive of bridge structures. This research aims at evaluating the seismic performance of the existing R/C bridge piers, which were nonseismically or seismically designed in accordance with the provision of Korea Highway Design Specification. Further experimental investigations have been doing to figure out the retrofitting effects of nonseismic R/C bridge piers confined with glass fiber at the plastic hinge zone. Pseudo-dynamic tests have been carried out in nine scaled R/C column specimens to investigate their hysteretic behavior under earthquake loading. Test parameters are axial load, input ground motion confinement steel ratio, glass fiber and etc.

  • The effect of frequency and amplitude of the OWC (Oscillating Water Column) motion on the nonlinear reaction forces in an air duct are studied experimentally. Experimental owe model is idealized as a simple circular cylinder with an orifice type air duct located at the middle oj the top rid. Reaction forces due to forced heave oscillation are measured and analyzed. By subtracting the effect of inertia forces and restoring forces, pneumatic damping force and added spring force are deduced. The effects of the frequency and amplitude of the heave motion are discussed. Also, the effects of solidity of the duct on the reaction forces are discussed.

Theoretical analysis of tensile stresses and displacement in orthotropic circular column under diametrical compression

  • This paper shows the solution for an orthotropic disk under the plane strain condition obtained with complex stress functions. These stress functions were induced by Lekhnitskii and expanded by one of the authors. Regarding diametrical compression test, the finite element method poses difficulties in representing the concentrated force because the specimens must be divided into finite elements during calculation. On the other hand, the method shown in this study can exactly represent this force. Some numerical results are shown and compared with those obtained under the plane stress condition for both stress and displacement. This comparison shows that the differences between the tensile stresses occurred under the plane strain condition and also that the differences under a plane stress condition increase as the orthotropy ratio increases for some cases.
