Changes in symptoms and dysfunction related to meniscus tears following the use of Korean medicine for ≥ 4 days were studied. The medical charts of 53 cases of diagnosed meniscus tears (magnetic resonance imaging) with an admission Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) score ≥ 4, between 2017 and 2022 were retrospectively reviewed. Treatments included acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, herbal treatment, Chuna therapy, and physiotherapy. The NRS, Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index, and European Quality of Life 5 Dimensions were performed at admission and discharge. There were 42 females and 11 males in this study. Patients were more likely to be in their 60s (38.18%), have an unknown etiology (81.13%), and have complex tears (50.94%). After receiving a combination of alternative Korean medicine during hospitalization, the mean NRS score improved from 6.82 ± 1.19 to 3.66 ± 1.83 (p < 0.001), the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index score improved from 46.47 ± 20.99 to 37.98 ± 19.23 (p < 0.001), and the mean European Quality of Life Five Dimensions score improved from 0.61 ± 0.18 to 0.68 ± 0.14 (p < 0.001) after treatment. These results suggest that Korean medicine treatment of meniscus tears alleviated pain and improved physical function.

Objectives : The purpose of this study is to report that the patient with Peripheral Facial palsy received Korean medicine treatments including SJS Non-resistance Technique-Facial(NRT-F) palsy through hospitalization treatment and received treatment effects. Methods : Four patients with peripheral facial palsy were treated with herbal medication, acupuncture, pharmacoacupunture, and NRT-F. The effect of treatment was evaluated by House-Brackmann Scale and the Yanagihara grading system. Results : After Korean medicine treatments with SJS NRT-F, symptoms were decreased and conditions were improved. Furthermore, the House-Brackmann Scale and the Yanagihara grading system scores were numerically better. Conclusions : The Korean medicine treatments with SJS NRT-F might be effective for Facial palsy.

The purpose of this study is to report the effects of Korean medicine treatment in wrist drop patient with thoracic outlet syndrome. We treated the patient for 8 days using Korean medicine treatment such as herbal medicine, acupuncture, Chuna manual therapy and pharmacopuncture. Changes in the numerical rating scale (NRS), EuroQol five dimension (EQ-5D) index, and symptoms were measured for assessment. After 8 days hospitalization, NRS decreased from 5 to 3, EQ-5D index and the symptoms of the patient also were improved. In conclusion, this case shows that Korean medicine treatment can be an effective treatment for wrist drop with thoracic outlet syndrome.

Objectives This paper is an analysis of domestic and foreign trends for the Korean medical treatment of avascular necrosis of the femoral head. Methods Domestic and foreign databases were searched and analyzed for Korean medical treatment interventions, research types, and treatment effects for avascular necrosis of the femoral head. Results There were 10 case reports in Korea, 2 case reports and 3 randomized controlled studies abroad. A total of 12 treatment interventions were used, and the types include acupuncture, herbal medicine, phamacopunture, electroacupuncture, cupping, physical therapy, chuna, acupotomy, moxibustion, warm acupuncture, laser acupuncture, and motion style treatment. As for the evaluation index, visual analogue scale, range of motion and harris hip score were the most common with 7 cases each. Conclusions Through this study, it was possible to understand the trends of domestic and foreign research on the treatment of avascular necrosis of the femoral head with Korean medicine. However, due to the small number of literature and no randomized control studies in Korea, treatment evidence is insufficient. It is considered that further research is needed in the future.

The purpose of this study is to report the effects of Korean medicine treatment in baastrup's disease. We treated the patient for 34 days using Korean medicine treatment such as acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, herbal medicine, Chuna manual therapy and help motion style acupuncture treatment. Numerical rating scale (NRS), EuroQol five dimension (EQ-5D) index, Oswestry disability index (ODI), and lumbar range of motion (ROM) were used as evaluation tools for the state. NRS decrease from 5 to 3, and EQ-5D index, ODI, L-spine ROM were improved by the treatment. In conclusion, this case study shows that Korean medicine treatment can be effective for baastrup's disease.

Objectives This study aimed to develop consensus-based recommendations for establishing standard clinical practice guidelines for pediatric anorexia through the utilization of a Delphi study. Methods We analyzed existing randomized controlled trials for pediatric anorexia treatment using the Delphi method-a structured process for achieving consensus among a panel of experts. A questionnaire was distributed among a select panel of nine specialists in the field. Results The initial Delphi round led to consensus on 30 distinct recommendations; however, consensus was not reached for 19 other recommendations, prompting a second Delphi round. In the subsequent round, adjustments were made based on feedback from the initial round, and deliberations were held on recommendations that previously lacked consensus. Following these adjustments, consensus was achieved on all recommendations. Additionally, a third Delphi iteration was conducted to address three specific queries that required amendment due to a reevaluation of the evidence levels of certain recommendations. In total, three Delphi rounds were carried out to produce informed recommendations related to the diagnosis, treatment, and general management of anorexia. Conclusions This investigation successfully generated evidence-based recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric anorexia. The recommendations encompassed various practices, including herbal medicine, acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping, and Chuna manual therapy, which can be integrated into clinical settings.

Objectives: We describe the clinical course in a 53-year-old female patient admitted to a Korean Medicine Hospital with insomnia disorder accompanied by a herniated intervertebral disc and managed with Korean medical treatments. Methods: The patient was treated with herbal medicines, including Shihogayonggolmoryo-tang, acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, and Chuna manual therapy for 33 days. The therapeutic effect was evaluated based on the Insomnia Severity Index, Numerical Rating Scale score, Oswestry Disability Index, and European Quality of Life 5 Dimensions Scale. Results: Post-treatment, the Insomnia Severity Index decreased from 21 to 6, the Numerical Rating Scale score decreased from 7 to 3, the Oswestry Disability Index decreased from 60 to 18, and the European Quality of Life 5 Dimensions Scale increased from 0.35 to 0.85. Conclusions: Korean medical treatments improved the symptoms of this patient with insomnia disorder accompanied by a herniated intervertebral disc. Further clinical research on patients with insomnia disorder is needed.

Objectives This study aims to comprehensively review research utilizing ultrasonography for assessing manipulative treatment on spinal diseases, with the goal of promoting the wider integration of ultrasound imaging into clinical practice. Methods A systematic search was conducted on three international databases (Embase, PubMed, Cochrane) up to July 23, 2023. The search included key terms such as ultrasonography, manipulation, and skeletal muscle. The inclusion criteria narrowed down the selection to studies specifically related to lumbar and cervical vertebrae. Results Eleven studies were included in the review, with 10 focusing on lumbar vertebrae and one on cervical vertebrae, all employing spinal manipulation treatment. Among the 11 selected studies, nine primarily focused on ultrasound imaging to measure muscle thickness, while two utilized shear wave elastography to assess muscle stiffness. Also, rigorous measures were taken to ensure the reliability of the ultrasonography data. Conclusions This scoping review highlights the limited but growing evidence supporting the use of ultrasonography to assess manipulative treatment for spinal diseases. Despite a scarcity of studies in South Korea, it is crucial to recognize the potential of ultrasonography in becoming a widely used and practical tool for evaluating the effectiveness of manipulative treatments in the near future.

The aim of this case report was to present the effects of intensive integrative Korean medicine treatment in a patient with lower back pain, both under extremity numbness, neck pain induced by adrenoleukodytrophy. A 49-year-old male patient was treated with Cheongpajeon-H, acupuncture, pharmacoacupuncture (Shinbaro2), chuna therapy for total 50 days of hospitalization. Lower back pain, both under extremity numbness, neck pain were assessed with a Oswestry disability index (ODI), Vernon-Mior neck disability index (NDI), numeric rating scale (NRS) and EuroQoL-5 dimension (EQ-5D). With 50 days of treatment, the pain was relieved from NRS 6 to 2. EQ-5D score increased from 0.75 to 0.779, ODI decreased from 34 to 15.56, NDI decreased from 30 to 15.56. These results show that lower back pain, both under extremity numbness, neck pain can be relieved with intensive integrative Korean medicine treatment. However, further well-designed studies are required to confirm these findings.

The objective of this study is to report the clinical effects of applying an integrated rehabilitation protocol to four patients with traumatic cervical spinal cord injuries. The treatments applied included acupuncture, cupping and moxibustion, chuna manual therapy, functional electrical stimulation, and other physical therapies. The evaluation methods included American Spinal Injury Association Impairment Scale, functional independence measure (FIM), modified Barthel index (MBI), numeric rating scale (NRS) and other scales. All patients presented marked improvements in FIM, MBI, NRS and other scales, along with increased muscle strength in the manual muscle test. The application of our protocol resulted in clear clinical benefits and enhanced the recovery and quality of life for the patients in this study.
