A study on food stuffs of Korea and China in the Era of Chosun Dynasty through Yun Hang Rock

  • This paper is a study on the food stuffs of Korea and China in the era of Chosun Dynasty through Yun Hang Rock. The staple food in Korea was rice, but in China, they usually suffered poor crops, which forced them to seek various other grains. China had a greater veriety of fruits in compare with Korea. They used pork, mutton, goose, duck and chicken as a whole. But Korea people preferred beef.

  • The culture of each era make their own art, and it is certain a sense of beauty is changed according to a flow of era. We can find an unique beauty in the traditional culture of one era. And it is formed by the local and climatically influences according to their own ethnic character. Furthermore, an unique beauty is became an important element in forming the culture. That is, it is the universality in general. What is important is to develop of one's tradition on the background of the past for the future. This study is focused on the personal ornaments of women's Gache among the Cyubang culture in Chosun era. Throughout the study of clothing design that applies various decorative elements like an ornamental hairpin, a chignon ornament, and ttoljam among the women's Gache, this study is proposed to internationalize of clothing design utilizing the Korean specific character. The concepts of this study are as follows : First, grasp a definition and notion about Gyubang Culture of Chosun Era. Second, consider the definition of ornamental culture and the specific characters and kinds of women's ornaments. Third, analyze the trend and examples in the modern fashion applying women's ornaments. The method of this study included national science and literature, fashion magazines, newspapers, internet, and the research of like materials, with the intent to set a foundation for understanding ornamental design. Throughout these backgrounds, I try to develop and make six modern clothing design that applies women's Gache.

A Study on the color of Daily Clothes of middle Era of the Chosun Dynasty (조선중기 일상복의 색상연구(I)-16.17세기 출토복식 중심-)

  • This study investigates the color of daily clothes of middle era of Yi dynasty by examining the color of excavated clothing which was the real clothes in 16th and 17th centuries. The purposes of this study lie in understanding emotional feeling observed by exact measurement of the color of the excavated and devising a method of reserving the color of the excavated by inspecting the discolored color of the excavated. For this, the color difference was measured by color measuring system. Minolta Chroma-meter, and then recorded in L*a*b system. The 3-dimensional color difference was observed by analyzing these data on Methmetica and change in color with ageing was assessed by reconstructing the color by Phoposhop. The color construction of daily clothes of middle era of the Chosun Dynasty was founded on a philosophy, and it was made up of colors such as white, brown, and blue. This color construction seemed to be based on the philosophy of naturalism symbolizing surrounding nature, e.g., white symbolizes Bak-sasang(bak-philosophy) and blue implies Eumyangohangsul.

  • A study was carried out to compare the daily foods which were eaten during $14{\sim}19$ century among Korea (Chosun dynasty), China (Ming, thing dynasty), and Japan (Muromachi, Edo era). Specially, in Ming, Ching dynasty, Noodles and dumpling were cooked very often and in Muromachi, Edo era, many kinds of beans were used so much, and there were many kinds of steamed rice to compare with Korea and China. Also, in Japan at these era Woodong, Morisoba, and Somyen were used as favorite foods harbitually. 1. The crops were used as staple foods in three countries such as steamed rice, gruel, noodle, dumpling, rice cake etc. commonly. 2. In Chosun, a roe deer, deer, antelope, and wild boar were more favoite dishes than cow, chicken, and dog, generally people enjoyed to eat pork and chicken. In Ming Ching, pork, chicken, goose, dove, lamb, ass, and duck were used as food materials, also wild animals such as deer, rabbit, and monkey etc. were used. In Muromach era, wild animal as racoon dog, otter, deer, antelope, bear, were used as food materials, in early Edo era (Yayoi and Momoyama), beef and pork were used as daily foods but they were eaten decreasingly in Edo era. So in Japan at those era, the dishes prepared of fishes were more than those of meats. For example, Sushi was made from that time, people all over the world are enjoying to have Sushi at present time. 3. Also in these era, many kinds of vegetables and fruits were used in three countries, and new kinds of vegetables and fruits were introduced from foreign countries, for example, red pepper, pumpkin, sweet potato, potato in Korea, corn, sweet potato, red pepper in China, and water melon, pumpkin, corn, red pepper, marmellow, sweet potato, sugar beet in Japan.

A Study on the Men's Trousers in the Chosun Dynasty (조선시대 남자바지에 관한 연구)

  • This study aimed at proving the fact that Men also wear SOKGOT similar to women's pants in early Chosun era unlike the general opinion that the men's pants is SAPOK-BAJI. From what SAPOK-BAJI didn't show up in the contemporary remains and the fact that men also wear GAE-DANG-GO (the pants opened low parts). which is one of SOKGOT types in ancient time of China, the assumption above can be guessed. Since the clothes style in Chosun era centered on PO. and the pants were designed not to show out. it can be considered there are any troubles for men to wear the SOKGOT style pants. But through Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592 and Chinese invasion of Korea in 1636. changes happened. Due to reflection and awaking about wide and burdensome clothes. the change seemed to be happened from wide SOKGOT style to narrow SAPOK style. The SOKGOT style pants seemed to settle down for women's only as men's pants become SAPOK-BAJI.

Archives acquisition activities and rule of the colonial chosun government general (조선총독부의 기록수집 활동과 식민통치)

  • Until now, archives of colonial era preserved in each public institution including National Archives & Records Service can be called as the results of colonial chosun government general's records management activities. However, it is a fact that only the fragment of the archives from colonial era remained in public institutions without maintaining integrity of record. Therefore, it is virtually impossible to restore operations process of the era only with current records. It is somewhat because some records were institutionally abrogated by valuation selecting standard of colonial chosun government general, but it is more likely the result of systematic destruction of documents and records upon liberation. On the other hand, although records that were being preserved by colonial chosun government general's acquisition policy escaped the systematic abrogation, the scope and target of the historical records were changed according to acquisition policy. Historical records managed by each inquiry agency of colonial chosun government general were collected to be used for fundamental information of colonial rule or compilation of Chosun history. However, archives collected by colonial chosun government general could not escape partiality as a goal for colonial rule had priority over the standpoint for recording Korean society. Although records management system of colonial chosun government general was introduced from Japanese government's system, it clearly shows colonial characteristics in the process of collecting Chosun's historical records and its use.

Historical Review on the Characteristics of Specialized and Mixed Land Uses of Korean Zoning System - From Chosun Planning Ordinace of 1934 to City Planning Law of 1962 (우리나라 용도지역제의 용도순화 및 용도혼합 특성에 관한 역사적 고찰 - 조선시가지계획령에서 도시계획법에 이르기까지 -)

  • While the zoning system has been developed based on the rationale of separated and specialized land uses to prevent negative externalities in the modern industrial era, the emergence of office-based new industries in the post-industrial era rather encourages mixed land uses to create agglomeration economies. This study aims to find historical basis to justify the reform of zoning system to promote both specialized and mixed land uses. When the zoning system was first introduced in Japanese colonial period by Chosun Planning Ordinance enacted in 1934, Special District within Manufacturing Area, and later within Residential, Commercial, and Mixed Areas respectively was institutionalized for specialized land uses, though it was not actually designated. When City Planning Law was enacted in 1962, Special District was substituted by Exclusive Areas (Exclusive Residential Area, Exclusive Manufacturing Area). Meanwhile Undesignated Area was designated for mixed land uses by Chosun Planning Ordinance, and later it was converted mostly into Mixed Area and partially into Green Area. Finally Mixed Area was substituted by Semi-Areas (Semi-Residential Area, Semi-Manufacturing Area) by City Planning Law in 1962. These demonstrate that Korean zoning system needs to revive the tradition that clearly promoted both specialized and mixed land uses.

The Research on the Process and Floor Plan of Model Houses for The Chosun Exhibition in 1929 (1929년 조선박람회 출품주택 개최경위 및 평면 고찰)

  • The Chosun Exhibition was held in 1929 and the Architectural Association of Chosun(AAC) displayed model houses fur the fair. These model houses represented the new housing trend of the Chosun society, so this research was necessary to find out the facts. The main materials used for this research were issues from 'Chosun and Architecture'. The objects of this research was to find out the activity of the AAC and to classify the displayed model houses according to the structure, plan and interior. These three model houses depicted the improved housing designs at that time. Improved housing designs also depicted the convenience of everyday life, hygiene, improvement of facilities and the application of modem lift to that era. Therefore, these three houses would be revaluated as new models of houses for the Chosun society under education activity by the AAC.

The Types and Characteristics of Golden Decoration Technique used in the Costumes of Chosun Dynasty Era (조선시대 복식에 사용된 금장식 기법의 유명과 특성)

  • The purpose of this study is to figure out the types and characteristics of golden decoration technique out of various techniques of expressing patterns on the costumes. This study reviews both costumes decorated with gold in the relics of Chosun dynasty and literatures focused on domestic and Chinese documents and records. The types of decoration technique using gold include JigGeum (brocade technique), InGeum (gold powder and flake attaching technique), and GeumSaJaSu (embroidery technique). The JigGeum is weaved using golden thread instead of silk thread in order to express patterns. The InGeum technique is to attach gold or silver powder or thin gold or silver flake on the surface of the fabric. The GeumSaJaSu technique is to embroider with gold thread on fabrics. 82 pieces of costumes made using gold in Chosun dynasty era are analyzed. The results follows; In terms of types of technique, is shown to take the majority; JigGeum (43.90%), InGeum (30.49%), GeumSaJaSu (23.61%). Looking at the patterns used by the types, plant pattern and letter pattern are mostly used for both the JigGeum and the inGeum. In terms of the characteristics by their uses, the InGeum is used for court dresses (52%). It is also used for ordinary dresses (12%) and for other purposes (36%). It is mostly used in the court dresses in the late period of Chosun dynasty era. The JigGeum is used for ordinary dresses (47.22%), for court dresses (44.44%) and for other purposes (8.34%). It is evenly used for court dresses and ordinary dresses.

Discourse Analysis of News Coverage about Chosun Art Exhibition in the Japanese Occupational Era (일제하 "조선미술전람회" 관련 신문보도에 나타난 일본의 오리엔탈리즘)

  • In this paper, the news coverage of Chosun Art Exhibition(鮮展) in the Japanese occupational era were analyzed by the discourse analysis technique. Japan was advocated the slogan of 'escape from the asia go to the west' and calls itself as western civilized nations during Japanese occupational era. Japan's colonial rule in Asia has created a Japanese orientalism that Japan is considered as developed, and the other Asian countries are considered underdeveloped countries. The media discourse of Chosun Art Exhibition make to believe that the 'backwardness' of Korean local color arts, unlike the 'colonial superiority' of Japanese arts. In the analysis of the newspapers, Maeil Shinbo and Donga Ilbo, Japan recognize Korean arts as the 'assimilation' of Japanese arts, but with the other hand recognize the 'exclusion' of Japanese arts had a dual-in. Especially, Donga Ilbo has a vision of orientalism on the one hand and has a nationalistic perspective on the other hand.
