  • The area between the arc and chord of a circle is called Hosichun whose figure looks like a bow and an arrow, and had been evaluated by the two formulas $\textit{H}_{n1}$=a(a+y)/2 and $\textit{H}_{n2}$=3ay/4, where $\alpha$ is the length of the arrow and y the chord of the circle. By the inspection of the area of the Hosichun, some errors of the numeration table in Thurmans S. Peterson's CALCULUS were found easily, that is, the area of the Hosichun is smaller than its subarea in the same Hosichun and perhaps has been to be the worldwide and centurial invalid standard. From now on, the chain proofreadings of the errors will be necessary in our mathematical world. This paper is intended to introduce some such problems related to a circle and another Pythagorean Theorem which is the ratio of the side and diagonal of five and seven In a square.

  • Archimedes showed that the area between a parabola and any chord AB on the parabola is four thirds of the area of triangle ${\Delta}ABP$, where P is the point on the parabola at which the tangent is parallel to the chord AB. Recently, this property of parabolas was proved to be a characteristic property of parabolas. With the aid of this characterization of parabolas, using centroid of triangles associated with a curve we present two conditions which are necessary and sufficient for a strictly locally convex curve in the plane to be a parabola.

  • It is well-known that the area of parabolic region between a parabola and any chord $P_1P_2$ on the parabola is four thirds of the area of triangle ${\Delta}P_1P_2P$. Here we denote by P the point on the parabola where the tangent is parallel to the chord $P_1P_2$. In the previous works, the first and third authors of the present paper proved that this property is a characteristic one of parabolas. In this paper, with respect to triangles ${\Delta}P_1P_2PQ$ where Q is the intersection point of two tangents to X at $P_1$ and $P_2$ we establish some characterization theorems for parabolas.

  • The capacity of tubular truss chords subjected to concentrated reaction forces in the vicinity of the open end (i.e., the bearing region) is not directly treated by existing design specifications; although capacity equations are promulgated for related tubular joint configurations. The lack of direct treatment of bearing capacity in existing design specifications seems to represent an unsatisfactory situation given the fact that connections very often control the design of long-span tubular structures comprised of members with slender cross-sections. The case of the simple-span overhead highway sign truss is studied, in which the bearing reaction is applied near the chord end. The present research is aimed at assessing the validity of adapting existing specifications' capacity equations from related cases so as to be applicable in determining design capacity in tubular truss bearing regions. These modified capacity equations are subsequently used in comparisons with full-scale experimental results obtained from testing carried out at the University of Pittsburgh.

  • This thesis introduces a study conducted by ANSYS, Finite Element Analysis program, on dynamic behavior by thickness of a chord and a brace of a jacket typed marine structure. As load condition to work on offshore structures is getting much more various, it becomes more important to design the structures and operate them. In addition, stability is also required. As the result of this study, it was proved that wind and wave load gives more affection on frequency than on added mass in the Modal Analysis. Also, the chord and brace affect stiffness more than diagonal brace according to sensitivity analysis.

  • A three-dimensional WIG (Wing In Ground effect) moving above free surface is numerically studied by means of finite difference techniques. The air flow field around the WIG is analyzed by MAC (Marker & Cell) method, and interactions between WIG and the free surface are appeared as the variation of pressure distribution acting on the free surface. To analyze the wavemaking phenomena by those pressure distributions, the NS (Navier-Stokes) solver is employed in which nonlinearities of the free surface conditions can be included. Through the numerical simulation, Cp values and lift/drag ratio are carefully reviewed by changing the height/chord ratio. The section shape of model is NACA0012 with the span/chord ratio of 3.0. Through computational results, it is confirmed that the effect of free surface is small enough to treat it as a rigid wavy wall.

  • Three-dimensional flow and aerodynamic loss in the tip-leakage flow region of a high-turning first-stage turbine rotor blade with a squealer tip have been measured with a straight miniature five-hole probe for the tip gap-to-chord ratio, h/e, of 2,0%. This squealer tip has a indent-to-chord ratio, $h_{st}/c$, of 5.5%. The results are compared with those for a plane tip ($h_{st}/c\;=\;0.0%$). The squealer tip tends to reduce the mass flow through the tip gap and to suppress the development of the tip-leakage vortex. Therefore, it delivers lower aerodynamic loss in the near-tip region than the plane tip does. At the mid-span, however, the aerodynamic loss has nearly the same value for the two different tips.

  • Axial fans for an air-conditioning unit are designed to equip the system with an expected flow-rate and low noise level by applying the blade design method of multi-sectioning and local camber generation. In this study, the distributions of chord length, stagger angle, and camber angle are globally and locally determined for the given specific speed, which is considered to be relatively high. The mock-up fans are observed to satisfy the aerodynamic performance and the noise level for the system simultaneously and discussed in terms of local flow patterns related to the emitted noise.

  • Studies on cavitation instabilities of hydrofoils and cascades are reviewed to obtain fundamental understandings of the instabilities observed in turbopump inducers. Most of them are based on the stability analysis of two-dimensional inviscid cavitating flow. The most important finding of the analysis is that the cavitation instabilities depend only on the mean cavity length. For a hydrofoil, the characteristic length is the chord length and partial/transitional cavity oscillation occurs with shorter/longer cavity than 75% of the chord length. For cascades, the characteristic length is the blade spacing and various modes of instabilities are predicted when the mean cavity is longer than 65% of the spacing. In the last part, rotating choke is shown to occur when the cavity becomes longer than the spacing.
