  • This study was performed on 302 cases of leptospirosis, tsutsugamushi disease and hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome(HFRS) which occurred in Chonnam(Do) in 1991 through 1993. The results were as follows : 1. 81.8% of the patients with Leptospirosis and 54.5% of the HFRS patients were men while 61.4% of the patients with tsutsugamushi disease were women. 2. Most patients lived in rural areas(Gun), their educational level was elementary School or lower and their occupations were either farmer or jobless. 3. Peak ages were 40s for leptospirosis(36.4%) and 50s for tsutsugamushi disease and HFRS(32.9% and 36.4% respectively). 4. The high incidence areas of tsutsugamushi disease were northern, eastern and a diagonal line, from northeast to southwest, of the Chonnam area, and these are consistent with a mountainous district. 5. In monthly distribution leptospirosis was higher in Sep. and Oct., and tsutsugamushi disease and HFRS were higher in Oct. and Nov. 6. The first case is occurring and the last case shows up later than in past years.

  • An epidemiological survey was performed to know the status of Cwptespori, mum sp. infection among the people in Seoul and Chollanam-do in 1992. One village of Chollanam-do (Hwasun-gun) which showed the highest oocyst positive rate was re-surveyed in 1995 for human infection and for cattle also. The subjected areas consisted of 8 urban villages (: dongs) of Seoul and 4 urban (: dongs) and 7 rural (: myonsl villages of Chollanam-do. A total of 3,146 fecal samples was collected randomly, and smears were made from formalin-ether sediments. They were examined for Cwptosporinium oocysts by modified acid fast staining. The overall oocyst positive rate was 79% (248/3,146), but the rate was remarkably different between Seoul and Chollanam-do, 0.5% (4/853) and 10.6% (244/2,293), respectively The average size of oocysts was 4.8 ± 0.5 by 4.2 ± 0.5 ㎛, compatible with C. pcnlum. In Chollanam-do, rural villages showed significantly higher rate (14.0%) than urban villages (3.7%). Especially the people in Iyang-myon, Hwasun- gun, a typical rural village, revealed a very high rate of 40.0% (74/185). Adults aged 51-70 years revealed the highest positive rate among all age groups. At the re-survey of the same village of Hwasun-fun in 1995, 44 (35.2%) of 125 villagers and 14 (93.3%) of IS cattle examined were positive for C. pnnpum oocysts. The results suggest that C. pnnpum is highly prevalent in rural areas of Chollanam-do, and an important source or mode of infection seems to be contaminated water or contact with the feces of infected cattle.

  • Of 80 cases of Salmonellosis reported in a provincial area in 1992, 90% were related to outbreaks, which occurred from Apr. to Nov. And the serotypes include the following: typhimurium, hadar, and enteritidis etc. Among these outbreaks the authors carried out the epidemiological investigation for 'I-eup'(highest attack region) outbreak. The results obtained were as follows: 1. The S. typhimurium isolated from stools of 7 cases among 29 cases. 2. The common-source of exposure was boiled pork and/or skewered slices of seasoned meat. 3. The incidence rate was 65.1%(29 cases). 4. The incidence showed significant difference between males(32.1%) and females(80.0%). 5. The incidence in under 20 years of age and 40 years of age were much higher than other age groups but there was no significant difference among much age groups. 6. The mean and the median incubation period were 18.5 and 17.0 hours respectively. 7. The secondary attack was not appeared.

  • To know a degree of pollution in agricultural products cultivated around 4 unworked mines located in Chollanam-Do, we investigated a concentration of heavy metal and trace metal to provide the basic data for its residual limits. 28 samples of seven kinds of agricultural products(lettuce, onion, potato, radish, pepper, pumpkin, bean) collected from 4 unworked mines located in Chollanam-Do in 2001 were analyzed by Mercury Analyzer for mercury and Atomic Absorption spectrophotometer for Pb, As, Cd, Cu, Mn, and Zn. Hg contents were detected N.D. ∼trace level(0.01 ppm and less) and As content were detected N.D. ∼ 0.029 lpm but most of same)leE were not detected. Cd contents were detected N.D∼0.124 ppm. The results of Hg, As, Pb and Cd content showed that for all the 7 species of agricultural products studied, none have accumulated levels dangerous enough to Pose health problems. The average contents of Cu were 3.070 ∼ 7.825 ppm in bean, the Mn were 3.688 ∼23.935 ppm in lettuce ailed the Zn were 5.690 ∼21.171 ppm in bean, respectively.

  • During the period from October 1996 to November 1998, the infection status of Paragonimus westermani metacercariae in freshwater crayfish (Cambaroides similis) collected from Bogildo (islet), Wando-gun, Chollanam-do, which is known for an endemic area of P. westermani in Korea, were examined. The average infection rate of Paragonimus metacercariae in crayfish was 88.6%, and mean number of metacercariae per infected crayfish was 30.2. This metacercarial density was the highest in the group of weight in 7.1-9.0 g. These results suggest that the natural life cycle of P. westermani is still well-preserved in Bogildo.

  • Tandem HPLC and atmospheric pressure chemical ionization(APcI) LC/MS method was used for the determination and confirmation of carbendazim residues in soybean sprout. Fluorescence(FL) detector was connected in tandem with the ultraviolet(UV) detector for dual detection of the carbendazim residue at the excitation and emission wavelength of 280 nm and 310 nm, respectively. The limit of detection for carbendazim was $0.1{\mu}g/kg$ sample. Recoveries of carbendazim from fortified soybean sprout at 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 ppm were averaged 89.1%. Mass spectrometry using a APcI source confirmed the carbendazim residue in the soybean sprout sample. Fragmentation pattern on the APcI LC/MS spectrum of carbendazim was simpler than that from electron impact(EI) mass spectrum. Carbendazim produced 3 major ions including m/z 133, m/z 159 and m/z 191($M^{+}$). This method was sensitive enough to provide reliable and reproducible results for practical applications.
