Optical Simulation of Multicolor Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Displays Using Finite-Difference Time- Domain (FDTD) Method

  • The Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is used to directly solve Maxwell's equations, and the techniques required for optical simulation of Bragg reflections of cholesteric liquid crystal (ChLC) displays are introduced in this paper. The simulated results show that the color gamut of a ChLC display can be broadened by using of a circular polarizer on top surface of the ChLC film, and are examined by experiments.

콜레스테릭 액정 폴리머 박막을 이용한 광섬유 원편광 거울 제작 및 이를 이용한 모드 록킹 된 광섬유 레이저 (Fiber optic circular polarizing mirror using polymer cholesteric liquid crystal and it's application in the mode-locked fiber laser)

  • 콜레스테릭 액정 플리머 박막을 이용한 새로운 개념의 광섬유 원편광 거울을 제작하고 그 특성을 분석하였다. 콜레스테릭 액정 거울의 광학적 특성을 보여주는 Jones Matrix를 유도하고 실험을 통하여 검증하였다. 제작된 광섬유 원편광 거울은 선형 광섬유 레이저 공진기에서 공간적 홀버닝을 제거하는데 사용 될 수 있으며, 광섬유 내에서의 비선형 편광 변화 효과를 이용한 모드록킹 동작을 얻을 수 있다. 실험을 통해 얻은 모드 록킹 된 레이저의 펄스 폭은 630fs로 측정 되었다.

Improving switching time from homeotropic state to planar state in cholesteric liquid crystal by olymer stabilization

  • A polymer stabilization method is employed to reduce the transition time from field-induced homeotropic(H) state to reflecting planar(P) state in the cholesteric liquid crystal(ChLC) display. To stabilize ChLC by polymer, we mixed ChLC with diacrylate of 2 $wt%{\sim}6$ wt%. Two samples were made with different method of stabilization. For one sample the diacrylate of 2 wt% was polymerized with the ChLC in P state, while for the other sample diacrylate of 16 wt% was polymerized with ChLC in H state. In the former case, the transition time was 1000 times faster then those in the pure sample. In the latter sample, the transition time was 1700 times faster than those in pure ChLC sample.

  • To realize the advantages of e-Paper, driving systems should be separated from panels to keep its superiority in thin, light, and flexible. For this purpose, this paper develops a panel hot-plugging driving system for R2R cholesteric LCD. Its performance is verified by implementing an e-Badge application. Satisfactory results are obtained.

  • 본 연구에서는 Cholestery1 bipheny1 ester계열 화합물을 합성하여 편광현미경이 부착된 hot-stage와 시차열분석기로 물성을 조사하였다. 이 계열 화합물들은 모두 콜레스테릭 액정상을 나타내며, 알콕시 사슬 3번부터 스메틱상이 형성됨을 보여 준다. 또한, 일반적인 콜레스테릭 액정화합물에 비해 높은 상전이 온도를 보유하고 있으며, 넓은 온도 범위에 걸쳐 액정상을 나타낸다.

  • This work offers a promising approach for development of a temperature-responsive colorimetric display platform. For this purpose, uniform thermochromic microcapsules consisting of a cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) core and a thin polyurethane shell layer were fabricated by conducting in-situ condensation polymerization at the interface of monodisperse CLC-in-water emulsion drops. Colloidal packing-driven microcapsule registry led to exact 2-dimensional positioning of CLC microcapsules into a holes-patterned flexible film stencil. Furthermore, we showed that the designated registry of different color types of CLC microcapsules on the stencil enabled development of a microwriting display technology capable of reversible text representation according to temperature change.

  • A cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) system exhibits one-dimensional (1-D) Photonic bandgap (PBG) characteristics in the transmission spectrum through a selective Bragg reflection. Related to the nonlinear optical (NLO) processes in a PBG structure of CLC, the inherent periodicity has been exploited to Phase-match the fundamental and the harmonic waves through the umklapp Processes. Near bandgap edges of a CLC, harmonic generations have been shown to be enhanced significantly through the field localization. (omitted)

  • A series of ${\alpha}{\omega}-bis[4-(4'-(S)-(+)-2-methylbutylbiphenyl-4-carboxy)phenoxy]alkanes$, were synthesized, and their thermal and liquid crystalline properties were studied. The chain length of the central polymethylene spacers, x, of the chiral twin compounds was varied from 3 to 12. These compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, IR and NMR spectroscopy, differential thermal analysis (DSC), and crosspolarized microscopy. All compounds were found to be enantiotropic liquid crystalline, and the values of melting $(T_m)$ and isotropization temperature $(T_i)$ as well as ${\delta}H_I$ and ${\delta}S_I$ decreased in a zig-zag fashion, revealing the so called odd-even effect as x increased. Their mesomorphic properties fell into four categories depending upon x; (a) compounds with x=3, 4 and 5 formed only a cholesteric phase on heating, while on cooling they went through two transitions of isotropic (I)-to-cholesteric (Ch) and Ch-to-smectic $A\;(S_A)$ phases before crystallization. (b) compounds with x=6, 8 and 10 exhibited only a cholesteric phase both on heating and on cooling. (c) compounds with x=7 and 9 went through three transitions of crystal $(C)-to-S_A,\;S_A-to-Ch,$ and Ch-to-I phases on heating while on cooling they went through four transitions of I-to-Ch, $Ch-to-S_A,\;S_A-to-Smectic\;C\;(S_C),\;and\;S_c-to-C$ phases in that order, and (d) compounds with x=11 and 12 went reversibly through four transitions of $C-to-S_C,\;S_C-to-S_A,\;S_A-to-Ch,$ and Ch-to-I phases.

폴리[1-(콜레스테릴옥시카보닐옥시)에틸렌]과 폴리[1-(콜레스테릴옥시카보닐헵타노일옥시)에틸렌]의 열방성 액정 거동 (Thermotropic Liquid Crystalline Behavior of Poly(1-cholesteryloxycarbonyloxy]ethylene] and Poly[1-(cholesteryloxycarbonylheptanoyloxy)ethylene])

  • 폴리(비닐 알코올)을 콜레스테릴 클로로포메이트 또는 8-콜레스테릴옥시카보닐헵타노일 클로라이드(CH8C)와 반응시킴에 의해 폴리[1-(콜레스테릴옥시카보닐옥시)에틸렌](PCOE)와 폴리[1-콜레스테릴옥시카보닐헵타노일옥시)에틸렌](PCOSE)를 합성함과 동시에 이들의 열 및 광학 특성을 검토하였다. CH8C는 단방성 콜레스테릭 상을 형성하는 반면 PCOE와 PCOSE는 쌍방성 콜레스테릭 상들을 형성하였다. CH8C의 경우와 같이, PCOSE의 광학피치$(\lambda_m)$는 온도가 상승함에 따라 감소하였다. PCOE는 PCOSE와 달리 반사색깔을 나타내지 않았다. 이러한 사실은 콜레스테릴 그룹에 의한 나선의 비틀림력은 콜레스테릴 그룹과 주사슬을 연결하는 스페이서의 길이에 민감하게 의존함을 시사한다 PCOE와 PCOSE가 나타내는 액정 특성들은 폴리(콜레스테릴-$\omega$-아크릴로일옥시알카노에이트들)이 나타내는 액정 특성들과 전혀 다르다. 이러한 결과들은 곁사슬과 주사슬의 화학결합의 양식이 콜레스테릭 상의 형성능, 안정성 그리고 $\lambda_m$의 온도 의존성에 중요한 역할을 함을 시사한다.
