Physiochemical factors, phytoplankton biomass (Chl ${\alpha}$) and primary productivity were investigated seasonally in the three lakes of Dongbok, Juam, and Yeongsan during April 2004${\sim}$March 2006. Microphytoplankton dominated (>60%) in Dongbok lake, and phytoplankton biomass was high in the upper area, especially during April 2004, whereas they were high in the lower area during June 2004. In Juam lake, the high phytoplankton biomass in April 2004 was contributed by nanophytoplankton. In Yeongsan lake, chlorophyll a was high in August with high contribution of nanophytoplankton. Primary production was highest in Dongbok lake, and then followed by Yeongsan and Juam lakes. Regression analysis in Dongbok take showed that Chl ${\alpha}$ and primary production had close relations with secchi depth. In Juam lake, phosphate were correlated with the Chl ${\alpha}$, while temperature and TN was correlated with primary production in the lower area. In Yeongsan lake, Chl ${\alpha}$ have positively correlation with TN/TP. Primary production in the upper have high relationship with secchi depth, however, in the lower have high relationship with turbidity. Linear regression analysis showed that nutrients of nitrogen and phosphorus should be reduced for the protections in Juam and Dongbok lakes. We suggested that suspended solids and phytoplankton growth related to turbidity are needed to manage in Yeongsan lake.
We investigated species composition and spatial distribution of the euphausiid community in the Yellow Sea and identified the relationship with environmental factors (temperature, salinity, chlorophyll $\alpha$, nitrate, phosphate, and silicate) using bimonthly data from June, 1997 to April, 1998. The environment varied during the sampling period. In warm seasons, thermocline was well developed rendering lower temperature and higher salinity and nutrient concentrations in the bottom layer. During cold seasons the water column was well mixed and no such vertical stratification was noted. Horizontal distribution of temperature, however, differed slightly between near-coast and offshore areas because of the shallow depth of the Yellow Sea, and between southern and northern areas because of the intrusion of water masses such as Yellow Sea Warm Current and Changjiang River Diluted Water. Four euphausiid species were identified: Euphausia pacifica, E. sanzoi, Pseudeuphausia sp. and Stylocheron affine. E. sanzoi and S. affine were collected, just one juvenile each, from the southern area in June and December, respectively. Pseudeuphausia sp. were collected in the eastern area all the year round except June. E. pacifica occurred at the whole study area and were the predominant species, representing at least 97.6% of the euphausiid abundance. Further, the distribution pattern of the species was varied in regards to developmental stages (adult, furcilia, calyptopis, egg). From spring to fall, E. pacifica adults were abundant in the central area where the Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water prevailed. Furcilia and calyptopis extended their distribution into nearly all the study area during the same period. From late fall to winter, adults were found at the near-coastal are a with similar pattern for furcilia and calyptopis. The distribution pattern of E. pacifica was consistent regarding temperature, salinity, and three nutrients during the sampling period, whereas chlorophyll $\alpha$ showed a different pattern according to the developmental stages. The nutrients should indirectly affect via chlorophyll $\alpha$ and phytoplankton concentration. With respect to these results, we presented a scenario about how the environmental factors along with the water current affect the distribution of E. pacifica in the Yellow Sea.
In order to clarify water quality, dynamics and structure of phytoplankton communities, and red tides, the present study was carried out monthly from July to September 1998 at 19 stations in Deukryang Bay. Water temperature varied from 24.$0^{\circ}C$ to 28.6$^{\circ}C$, and salinities ranged from 25.0$\textperthousand$ to 28.6$\textperthousand$. During red tides in July, chlorophyll-$\alpha$ contents were rather high in August, it showed that phytoplankton controlled primary production in this bay. Phytoplankton was composed of 89 diatoms, 19 dinoflagellates, and 3 silicoflagellates. Phytoplankton standing crops varied from a minimum of 1.3$\times$10$^4$cells/ι(Sept., St. 17) to a maximum of 3.8$\times$10$^{6}$ cells/ι (July, St. 10). Red tides occurred in July when the standing crops averaged 1.8$\times$10$^{6}$ cells/ι. Leading the causative organisms of red tide were Prorocentrun minimum in the upper bay, Chaetoceros curvisetus in the mouth and middle part of the bay, Ceratium furca and Thazassio- sira sp. around Nokdong Harbour. Concentration of nutrients such as nitrogen was high in the upper bay, during red tides, water temperatures varied from 23.8$^{\circ}C$ to 29.7$^{\circ}C$ and salinity were 23.l$\textperthousand$ to 27.0$\textperthousand$.
Nutrient limitation and light limitation was examined for the Youngsan Lake by collecting chlorophyll $\alpha$ and other properties including light intensity, nutrient concentrations, pheopigment ratio monthly from March, 2003 to April, 2004 (except for November-January). Chlorophyll $\alpha$ was fractionated into net-(>$20\;{\mu}m$) and nano-size(<$20\;{\mu}$). Light and nutrient limitation index was calculated based on the equations incorporating the mechanisms of limitation of light and nutrients from the literature. Phytoplankton population (chlorophyll $\alpha$) was low during the wet season especially in August and increased in short-period during other seasons. Photoperiod was short during the wet season but long during the dry season. Nutrients such as phosphate and ammonium were rapidly increased in spring, 2004. Light limitation index was minimum (0.01) in August during the wet season and nutrient limitation index was relatively high (>0.4) except for May and September. Light limitation may affect phytoplankton growth rather than nutrient limitation considering that nutrient levels are high in the Youngsan Lake. Results of correlation analyses showed a negative correlation between light and nutrient limitation indices and net-pheopigment index, and a positive correlation between the indices and nano-pheopigment index. These results suggest that phytoplankton response to change of light and nutrient may be size-dependant.
The removal of Microcystis aeruginosa and Chlorella zofingiensis by ceramic powder was investigated on the basis of both the particle size (under 0.05, 0.1, 1 mm) and the dosage (0.1, 1, $10\;g\;L^{-1}$) of the ceramic powder. The removal efficiencies of M. aeruginosa and C. zofingiensis were highest with a particle size of 0.05 mm and a dosage of $1\;g\;L^{-1}$ of the ceramic powder in laboratory experiment. $chlorophyll-{\alpha}$ concentrations decreased in both field and enclosure samples with a particle size of 0.05 mm and a dosage of $1\;g\;L^{-1}$ of ceramic powder, resulting in the removal efficiencies of 67 and 69%, respectively. Consequently, it was concluded that the ceramic powder could be used to control algal bloom by removing $chlorophyll-{\alpha}$ in eutrophic waters.
The quality of different grades of dried lavers obtained from three culture areas was evaluated and its changes during the storage at different levels of water activity were measured. Not much differences in general chemical composition between the locality was detected except some in the content of lipid and pigments. But the quality grades of dried lavers were mainly depended upon the content of protein and pigments including chlorophyll a, carotenoids, and biliproteins although there was little difference in amino acid composition of the proteins, and glutamic acid, aspartic acid and alanine were high in general. The lipid of dried lavers was composed of a high level of polyunsaturated fatty acids, particularly, of eicosapentaenoic acid which amounted to as much as a half of the total lipid, and of palmitic acid that reached a quarter depending on grades. The quality of dried layers was significantly changed by equilibrium moisture level when stored for three months at different water activities in range of 0.1 to 0.6. The loss of chlorophyll a, carotenoid, biliproteins, ascorbic acid, and browning were markedly retarded at aw 0.1 to 0.2. Oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids and the loss of free amino acids were also minimized at aw 0.2. Glutamic acid and methionine were reduced very fast during the storage.

Ecological influences of indigenous freshwater bivalve Unio douglasiae on the water quality and epilithic diatom community was examined with artificial stream (AST), which constructed in a laboratory daily receiving the eutrophic lake water. For the colonization of new periphyton community, forty commercial slide glasses were deposited as a substrate into the lowest part of each AST. Prior to 1 week, the AST was operated to induce the freely-colonization of the algal community in the absence of mussels. After the mussels was introduced at 435 indiv. $m^{-2}$ between step 1 and step 5, the passed water and substrates were daily collected to analysis the change of water quality and lotic and lentic algae abundance for 10 days. Compared to the control, turbidity (60.0% of control), suspended solids (62.5%), and chlorophyll-$\alpha$ (72.2%) in mussel-passed waters were decreased significantly, while a strong increase of ammonia (up to 800% of control) was companied with the decrease of dissolved oxygen (19.5% of control) and total phosphorus (23.9%), respectively. On average, the concentrations of suspended solids (67.0% of control) and chlorophyll-$\alpha$ (89.4%) in mussel-treated substrates were remarkably increased, however algal abundance in its water simultaneously decreased. These results indicate that incidentally or purposely mussel introductions can decrease organic matter of the stream and increase transparency of stream water, however, mussel-mediated nutrient and pseudofeces release may stimulate the adverse growth of periphyton or phytoplankton community in the lower stream or reservoir.
This study was conducted to evaluate the growth characteristics of creeping bentgrass cultivars for fairway of golf course at Yeoju area in Korea. At germination and coverage rate of creeping bentgrass, 'Shark' and 'CY-2' were excellent, 'L-93', 'Alpha', 'T-1 was in order', respectively. Visual qualities of 'Shark' and 'CY-2' also were excellent. Especially, 'Shark', 'T-1', and 'CY-2' showed excellent visual quality in summer days, the critical times for the bentgrass fairway quality. 'Shark', 'CY-2' and 'T-1' were excellent in Chlorophyll contents throughout the evaluation period. Chlorophyll content of 'T-1' was maintained very high in summer. 'CY-2' and 'Shark' showed the best root growth at the beginning of the study and contained longer and hairy roots. Which might make these two cultivars' water absorption easier than other's. NDVI (normalized difference vegetation index)of 'Shark', 'L-93' and 'CY-2' was excellent, respectively. 'T-1' showed the highest density and 'Shark', 'CY-2', 'Alpha', 'L-93' was followed by. The density of 'T-1' was rather increased in summer season, while those of other cultivars were decreased. Three diseases such as anthracnose, brown patch, and dollar spot, were appeared during the evaluation period. 'T-1' and 'L-93' were very sensitive to anthracnose which occurred at the beginning days of the study. The most susceptible cultivars to brown patch were 'Alpha' and 'L-93'. 'T-1' was the least resistant to dollar spot which occurred at the same time with brown patch.
Exogenously applied spermine, spermidine and putrescine caused a delay of senescence in fronds Lemna gibba G3 under continuous illumination. When the proximal half of a frond containing the meristematic“pockets”was removed, endogenous spermidine level in the distal half (half frond) increased initially to a miximal level, which was followed by a decline during a period of 10 days of incubation in light. No appreciable changes were observed with putrescine or spermine levels. Treatment of fronds with $\alpha$-difluromethylarginine (DFMA) resulted in both reduced level of spermidine and enhancement of chlorophyll loss in half fronds. $\alpha$-difluoromethylornithine (DFMO) was found to be virtually ineffective in either parameter. Results of experiments with ABA and kinetin indicate that there is a close correlation between the progress of senescence and spermidine level in Lemna fronds under illumination. It is suggested that endogenous level of spermidine is associated, at least in part, with frond senescence in this aquatic plant.
The temporal variation of bacterial community and environmental factors, affecting on bacterial community structure were estimated monthly kom April, 1998 to May, 1999. Bacterial community structures were determined by in situ hyblidization with rRNA-targeted fluorescently labeled oligonucleotide probes (FISH) and epifluorescence microscopy; and the statistical analysis was done by SPSS program. The oligonucleotide probes used in this study were EUB338, ALFlb, GAM42a, and CF. In surface water, $\alpha$-group was related to only DOC (-0.538, p<0.05) and Chlorophyll a concentration was related to y-group (-0.630, p$\beta$-group and Cytophaga-Flavobacterium group were related to water temperature as 0.665, and 0.685 @<0.05). Between pH and $\beta$-group, there was a positive relationship (0.541, p<0.05), and Cytophaga-Flavobactevizim group was represent to correlation (0.672, p
