This work examines the dynamic properties of ice surfaces in vacuum for the temperature range of 140~180 K, which extends over the onset temperatures for ice sublimation and the phase transition from amorphous to crystallization ice. In particular, the study focuses on the transport processes of excess protons and chloride ions in ice and their segregative behavior to the ice surface. These phenomena were studied by conducting experiments with a relatively thick (~100 BL) ice film constructed with a bottom $H_2O$ layer and an upper $D_2O$ layer, with excess hydronium and chloride ions trapped at the $H_2O$/$D_2O$ interface as they were generated by the ionization of hydrogen chloride. The migration of protons, chloride ions, and water molecules to the ice film surface and their H/D exchange reactions were measured as a function of temperature using the methods of low energy sputtering (LES) and Cs+ reactive ion scattering (RIS). Temperature programmed desorption (TPD) experiments monitored the desorption of water and hydrogen chloride from the surface. Our observations indicated that both hydronium and chloride ions migrated from the interfacial layer to segregate to the surface at high temperature. Hydrogen chloride gas desorbs via recombination reaction of hydronium and chloride ions floating on the surface. Surface segregation of these species is driven by thermodynamic potential gradient present near the ice surface, whereas in the bulk, their transport is facilitated by thermal diffusion process. The finding suggests that chlorine activation reactions of hydrogen chloride for polar stratospheric ice particles occur at the surface of ice within a depth of at most a few molecular layers, rather than in the bulk phase.

The photodegradation of benzene was studied in an aqueous solution using a medium pressure Hg-lamp. In this study, persulfate, nitrate, nitrite, chloride, and sulfate ions were all tested as sensitizers. The persulfate, nitrate, and nitrite ions exhibited a sensitizing effect in the photodegradation of benzene, whereas no detectable effects were observed with the sulfate and chloride ions. When nitrite ions were used as the sensitizer, the photodegradation of benzene ran through a maximum value and thereafter decreased with an increasing nitrite concentration. The resulting build-up of nitrite ions seemed to scavenge the hydroxyl radicals. When nitrite ions were present along with persulfate ions, the photodegradation of benzene was inhibited.
Kinetics of halogen exchange reaction of 1-phenthyl chloride and 2-phenethyl chloride using radioisotopic tracer halide ions in acetone have been studied. The reactions were belived to be S$_{N}$2 processes and the orders of relative nucleophilicity of halide ions were Cl->Br->I-. The reaction rate is slower than that of benzyl chloride. These were interpreted in terms of solvation effect of halide ions and HSAB principle.

Chloride diffusion effect of cement paste, freezing and thawing test, carbonation of concrete specimen were carried out using inorganic coating material. According to the chloride ions diffusion test, it is elucidated that permeability and diffusion coefficient of Cl ̄ ions and apparent coefficient of coated cement paste is smaller than plain cement paste. A durability of coated concrete specimen was enhanced by the experiment result of concrete carbonation and freezing thawing test.

This paper presents the experimental results on the penetration of chloride. ions to ordinary portland cement concrete which is subjected to 2 different artificial environments; consecutive digestion, wetting at $3\%$ NaCl for 1 day and then drying at $40^{\circ}C$ oven for 4 days. The water-cement ratio was $35\%,\;45\%,\;55\%$. Test results showed that the intrusion depth and concentration of chloride ions penetrated into concrete in repeated wetting-drying environments were respectively deeper and higher than those of consecutive digestion environment. The penetration of chloride ions deeply depend on the effect of water to cement ratio.

This study investigated the chloride binding isotherms of various cement types, especially the contributions of C-S-H and AFm hydrates to the chloride binding isotherms were determined. Ordinary Portland cement (OPC), Modified cement (MC), Rapid-hardening Portland cement (RHC) and Low-heat Portland cement (LHC) were used. The total chloride contents and free chloride contents were analyzed by ASTM. The contents of C-S-H, AFm hydrates and Friedel's salt were determined by X-ray diffraction Rietveld (XRD Rietveld) analysis. The results showed that OPC had the highest chloride binding capacity, and, LHC had the lowest binding capacity of chloride ions. MC and RHC had very similar capacities to bind chloride ions. Experimental equations which distinguish the chemically bound chloride and physically bound chloride were formulated to determine amounts of the bound chloride basing on chloride binding capacity of hydrates.

Corrosion management of an aircraft and its engine relies on rinsing and cleaning using tap water. Few studies have reported effects of tap water species on corrosion behaviors of structural materials. In this study, a series of experiments were conducted based on the design of experiment. Solutions with different levels of chloride and sulfate ions were prepared using a full factorial design. Two structural materials (aluminum alloy and steel) were used for an alternate immersion test. Weight loss was then measured. In addition, a silver specimen was utilized as a sensor for chloride deposition measurement. The silver specimen was examined using the electrochemical reduction method, XPS, and SEM-EDS. Surface analysis revealed that levels of chloride and sulfate ions were sufficient for the formation of silver chloride and silver surface. Statistical analysis of weight loss and chloride deposition rate showed significant differences in measured values. Concentration of chloride ions greatly affected corrosion behaviors of structural materials. Sulfate ion hindered the adsorption reaction. These results emphasize the importance of controlling ion concentration of tap water used for cleaning and rinsing an aircraft.

In marine and coastal environments, penetration of chloride ions is one of the main mechanisms causing concrete reinforcement corrosion. Currently, most of experimental investigations about submerged penetration of chloride ions are started after the four weeks standard curing of concrete. The further hydration of cement and reduction of chloride diffusivity during submerged penetration period are ignored. To overcome this weak point, this paper presents a numerical procedure to analyze simultaneously cement hydration reaction and chloride ion penetration process. First, using a cement hydration model, degree of hydration and phase volume fractions of hardening concrete are determined. Second, the dependences of chloride diffusivity and chloride binding capacity on age of concrete are clarified. Third, chloride profiles in hardening concrete are calculated. The proposed numerical procedure is verified by using chloride penetration test results of concrete with different mixing proportions.

The purpose of this study is to develop a process technology to produce high hardness drinking water which meet drinking water standard, remaining useful minerals like magnesium and calcium in the seawater desalination process while removing the sulfate ions and chloride ions. Seawater have been separated the concentrated seawater and desalted seawater by passing on Reverse Osmosis membrane (RO). Using Nano-filtration membrane (NF), We were prepared primary mineral concentrated water that sodium chloride were not removed. By the operation of electro-dialysis (ED) having ion exchange membrane, we were prepared concentrated mineral water (Mineral enriched desalted water) which the sodium chloride is removed. We have produced the high hardness water to meet the drinking water quality standards by diluting the mineral enriched desalted water with deionized water by RO. Reverse osmosis membranes (RO) can separate dissolved material and freshwater from seawater (deep seawater). The desalination water throughout the second reverse osmosis membrane was completely removed dissolved substances, which dissolved components was removed more than 99.9%, its the hardness concentration was 1 mg/L or less and its chloride concentration was 2.3 mg/L. Since the nano-filtration membrane pore size is $10^{-9}$ m, 50% of magnesium ions and calcium ions can not pass through the nano-filtration membrane, while more than 95% of sodium ions and chloride ions can pass through NF membrane. Nano-filtration membrane could be separated salt components like sodium ion and chloride ions and hardness ingredients like magnesium ions and calcium ions, but their separation was not perfect. Electric dialysis membrane system can be separated single charged ions (like sodium and chloride ions) and double charged ions (like magnesium and calcium ions) depending on its electrical conductivity. Above electrical conductivity 20mS/cm, hardness components (like magnesium and calcium ions) did not removed, on the other hand salt ingredients like sodium and chloride ions was removed continuously. Thus, we were able to concentrate hardness components (like magnesium and calcium ions) using nano-filtration membrane, also could be separated salts ingredients from the hardness concentration water using electrical dialysis membrane system. Finally, we were able to produce a highly concentrated mineral water removed chloride ions, which hardness concentration was 12,600 mg/L and chloride concentration was 2,446 mg/L. By diluting 10 times these high mineral water with secondary RO (Reverse Osmosis) desalination water, we could produce high mineral water suitable for drinking water standards, which chloride concentration was 244 mg/L at the same time hardness concentration 1,260 mg/L. Using the linked process with reverse osmosis (RO)/nano filteration (NF)/electric dialysis (ED), it could be concentrated hardness components like magnesium ions and calcium ions while at the same time removing salt ingredients like chloride ions and sodium ion without heating seawater. Thus, using only membrane as RO, NF and ED without heating seawater, it was possible to produce drinking water containing high hardness suitable for drinking water standard while reducing the energy required to evaporation.

This study aimed to elucidate causes of corrosion of heat transport pipes and air vents installed under a manhole of heat transport facilities and suggest effective anticorrosive measures by applying paints or adhesive tapes. It was found that air vent corrosion was attributed to corrosion under insulation caused by the inflow of water and the enrichment of chloride ions. The infiltrated water caused a hydrolysis of polyurethane foam (PUF) insulation by concentrating chloride ions at the interface between a pipe and the PUF. As insulator deteriorated, more chloride ions were eluted as confirmed by ion chromatograph (IC) analysis. As an effective method to prevent air vent corrosion, different types of paints and adhesive tapes with higher corrosion resistance on chloride ions were applied and environmental resistance tests were performed with those samples. Based on environmental test results of samples exposed to 10% HCl solution, it was revealed that a wax tape was the most adequate from a viewpoint of stability at operating condition, environmental resistance, surface treatment, and field applicability.
