In order to estimate the chloride ion penetration, the model, which considers diffusion and sorption, is proposed on the basis of Finite Element Method (FEM). The FEM program provides the estimation of chloride concentration according to cyclic humidity and sorption. After the humidity diffusion analysis is carried out, the chloride ion diffusion and sorption analysis are conducted on the basis of the preestimated humidity data in each element. Each element has different analysis variables at different ages and locations. At early ages and constant outer humidity, the difference between inner and outer relative humidity causes the chloride ion penetration by sorption. As the humidity diffusion reduces the difference with age, the effect of sorption on the chloride ion penetration decreases. By the way, the cyclic humidity increases the effect of sorption on the chloride ion penetration at early ages, and the quantity of chloride ion around steel at later ages. Therefore, the in-situ analysis of chloride ion penetration for marine concrete structures must be performed considering the cyclic humidity condition and the long term sorption.

This paper presented the model to predict the chloride diffusion coefficient in tension zone of plain concrete under flexural cyclic load. The fictitious crack based analytical model was used together with the stress degradation law in cracked zone to predict crack growth of plain concrete beams under flexural cyclic load. Then, under cyclic load, the chloride diffusion, in the steady state and one dimensional regime, through the tension zone of the plain concrete beam, in which microcracks were formed by a large number of cycles, was simulated with assumptions of continuously straight crack and uniform-size crack. The numerical analysis in terms of the chloride diffusion coefficient, $D_{tot}$, normalized $D_{tot}$, crack width and crack length was issued as a function of the load cycle, N, and load level, SR. The nonlinear model as regarding with the chloride diffusion coefficient in tension zone and the load level was proposed. According to this model, the chloride diffusion increases with increasing load level. The predictions using model fit well with experimental data when we adopted suitable crack density and tortuosity parameter.
Crack on concrete surface allows more rapid penetration of chlorides. Crack width and depth are dominant parameters for chloride behavior, however their effects on chloride penetration are difficult to quantify. In the present work, the previous anisotropic (1-D) model on chloride diffusion in concrete with single crack is improved considering crack shape and roughness. In the previous model, parallel-piped shape was adopted for crack shape in steady-state condition. The previous model with single crack is improved considering wedge shape of crack profile and roughness. For verifying the proposed model, concrete samples for nuclear power plant are prepared and various crack widths are induced 0.0 to 1.2 mm. The chloride diffusion coefficients in steady-state condition are evaluated and compared with simulation results. The proposed model which can handle crack shape and roughness factor is evaluated to decrease chloride diffusion and can provide more reasonable results due to reduced area of crack profile. The roughness effect on diffusion is evaluated to be 10-20% of reduction in chloride diffusion.
Mutual diffusion coefficients of choline chloride were determined by using the diaphragm cell method in aqueous solutions of chondroitin sulfate A at $25^{\circ}C$. The diffusion coefficients of choline chloride in 0.1g/100ml, 0.5g/100ml and 1g/100ml respectively of chondroitin sulfate solutions were compared with those of binary systems of water-choline chloride. At low concentrations, the diffusion coefficients of the choline chloride in the presence of chondroitin sulfate were significantly smaller than the values obtained in the absence of chondroitin sulfate, indicating a strong interaction between these solutes. The effect of this interaction on the diffusion of choline ion is largest at higher chondroitin sulfate concentrations and at lower choline chloride concentrations. The influence of chondroitin sulfate is overcome at higher choline chloride concentrations. Self-diffusion coefficients of choline ion in the presence of chondroitin sulfate are also obtained. Excellent agreements were obtained between the experimental data and the calculated values obtained by using the Manning's equations. These observations suggest that the interaction between choline chloride and chondroitin sulfate involves primarily a long range electrostatic effect and there is no appreciable "condensation" or binding of choline ion to the chondroitin sulfate.
Recently, accelerated chloride diffusion coefficients are used for an evaluation of chloride behavior. Similar as apparent diffusion coefficients, accelerated diffusion coefficients decrease with time. In this study, decrease in diffusion coefficient with time is simulated with porosity. Utilizing DUCOM-program, porosities from 15 mix proportions are obtained and diffusion coefficients are modelled with regression analysis of porosity for 270 days. Considering non-linear binding capacity which means the relation between free and bound chloride ion, chloride behavior in high performance concrete is evaluated. Through utilizing the previous test results for concrete under chlorides for 180 days, the applicability of the proposed technique is verified. The proposed technique is evaluated to reasonably predict the chloride behavior in concrete with various w/c (water to cement) ratios and mineral admixtures (GGBFS and FA). It is also shown that decrease in chloride diffusion should be considered for chloride prediction in concrete with mineral admixture since it has very clear decrease in diffusivity with time.
Evaluation of chloride penetration is very important, because induced chloride ion causes corrosion in embedded steel. Diffusion coefficient obtained from rapid chloride penetration test is currently used, however this method cannot provide a correct prediction of chloride content since it shows only ion migration velocity in electrical field. Apparent diffusion coefficient of chloride ion based on simple Fick's Law can provide a total chloride penetration magnitude to engineers. This study proposes an analysis technique to predict chloride penetration using apparent diffusion coefficient of chloride ion from neural network (NN) algorithm and time-dependent diffusion phenomena. For this work, thirty mix proportions with the related diffusion coefficients are studied. The components of mix proportions such as w/b ratio, unit content of cement, slag, fly ash, silica fume, and fine/coarse aggregate are selected as neurons, then learning for apparent diffusion coefficient is trained. Considering time-dependent diffusion coefficient based on Fick's Law, the technique for chloride penetration analysis is proposed. The applicability of the technique is verified through test results from short, long term submerged test, and field investigations. The proposed technique can be improved through NN learning-training based on the acquisition of various mix proportions and the related diffusion coefficients of chloride ion.

Corrosion in RCC structures is one of the most important factors that affects the structure's durability and subsequently causes reduction of serviceability. The most severe cause of this corrosion is chloride attack. Hence, to prevent this to happen proper understanding of the chloride penetration into concrete structures is necessary. In this study, first the mechanism of this chloride attack is understood and various parameters affecting the process are identified. Then an FEM modelling is carried out for the chloride diffusion process. The effects of fly ash and slag on the diffusion coefficient and chloride penetration depth in various mixes of concretes are also analyzed through integrating Virtual RCPT Lab and FEM.

Chloride ion diffusion is the most important thing of occuring deterioration in RC structure. So it is important to decide the precise chloride ion diffusion coefficient in order to predict the durability life in RC structure. The purpose of this study is to analyze the established data, which are restricted by chloride diffusion coefficient, and to calculate chloride ion diffusion coefficient using RCPT test. To examine the prediction of the concrete structure durability by an FEM analysis and the chloride diffusion coefficient as a variable. Each surface finishing materials were effective on the increment of chloride penetration resistance, but showed a little different effect depending on the type of surface finishing material.

The studies on chloride diffusion of concrete have been done so far by many researchers. However, there are few studies on the effects of other attacks, like carbonation, on chloride diffusion properties. In this study, the experiments are carried out focusing on this by varying cement type, water to cement ratio and replacement of fly ash of concrete. The results show that carbonation attacks do not affect greatly chloride diffusion properties of plain concrete, while the different tendencies are exhibited for fly ash concrete. Therefore, it is desirable to consider the effects of carbonation attacks on the chloride diffusion model to predict accurately the penetration of chloride ion fly ash is partially replaced for cement.
Carbonation is a widespread degradation of concrete and may be coupled with more severe degradations. An experimental investigation was carried out to study the effect of carbonation on chloride ion diffusion of concrete. The characteristic of concrete after carbonation was measured, such as carbonation depth, strength and pore structure. Results indicated that carbonation depth has a good linear relation with square root of carbonate time, and carbonation can improve compressive strength, but lower flexural strength. Results about pore structure of concrete before and after carbonation have shown that carbonation could cause a redistribution of the pore sizes and increase the proportion of small pores. It also can decrease porosities, most probable pore size and average pore diameters. Chloride ion diffusion of concrete after carbonation was studied through natural diffusion method and steady state migration testing method respectively. It is supposed that the chloride ion concentration of carbonation region is higher than that of the sound region because of the separation of fixed salts, and chloride ion diffusion coefficient was increased due to carbonation action evidently.
