  • In this paper, we propose a novel signaling method using chirp signals in UWB radio with satisfaction of FCC regulation. Chirp signals have been used in many ranging systems such as radar because of its good correlation properties. Because it is important to use broader signal bandwidth in order to get higher precision of the ranging, according to the Cramer-Rao Lower Bound, UWB radio is extremely good as the ranging systems. But, it is very difficult to apply existing chirp signals to UWB, because FCC regulates that the systems operating in UWB radio must occupy signal bandwidth more than 500MHz on the condition of stopping the frequency sweeping. So, we propose multiple chirp signals which can satisfy the regulation of FCC while maintaining chirp signal's properties. The multiple chirp signals which are composed of the sub-chirps modulated by sub-carriers can expand the signal bandwidth with the same principle of OFDM systems. The simulation results show that the BER performance of the proposed multiple chirp signals is identical to that of conventional OFDM when it is applied to data communication, and that the correlation properties of the proposed signals are almost the same with properties as those of single chirp signals whose sweeping bandwidth is the same value with the proposed one.

  • The effect of dispersion in optical transmission system changes according to chirp and SPM. Chirp depends on the modulation condition of an external modulator. SPM is proportional to signal power. In this paper, we analyzed the pulse broadening due to SPM and chirp in the system with dispersion by using Split Step Fourier Method and calculated the optimum chirp parameter for 400 km transmission system. Experimental results are presented also.

  • We investigated how the polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) tolerance was degraded by semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA)-induced chirp for the 10 Gb/s nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ), duobinary NRZ, return-to-zero (RZ), and carrier-suppressed RZ (CS-RZ) modulation formats. The power penalty was calculated as a measure of the system performance due to PMD for a given SOA-induced chirp. Considering only first-order PMD, all modulation formats have a similar PMD tolerance regardless of SOA-induced chirp. On the other hand, when both first- and second-order PMD are considered, the PMD tolerance of all modulation formats with the exception of the CS-RZ modulation format are degraded by SOA-induced chirp. Among all modulation formats considered here, the NRZ modulation format has the PMD tolerance with the highest sensitivity to SOA-induced chirp. When the peak-to-peak chirp induced by SOAs is $0.28{\AA}$, its PMD tolerance is degraded up to 4 dB for a differential group delay (DGD) of 50 ps. However, the PMD tolerance of the CS-RZ modulation format is largely unaffected by SOA-induced chirp.

  • Chirp spread spectrum method using both time and frequency component is fit to time varying channel such as powerline channel. The used chirp symbol based on the CEBus standard is the unit symbol which sweeps from 100kHz to 380kHz over a 25㎲. To evaluate the performance of between Chirp-SS and DSSS, we measured the bit error rate under Gaussian channel. Simulation result is shown that Chirp-SS has a about 3[dB] gain of SNR than DSSS. To verify the performance of implemented modem, it is made up the powerline channel environment. After adding several noises to it, we examined the receiving status of modem. The implemented modem is able to receive the signal over the powerline channel with having several noises and capacitive loads.

  • Numerical simulation for effect of chirp on PMD and PDL was accomplished. we assumed two uniform fiber concatenation with both polarization mode dispersion and polarization-dependent loss. We showed that polarization mode dispersion is increased with chirp parameter and polarization-dependent loss is decreased with chirp. And we accomplished mathematical analysis.

  • A recent technology trends in synthetic aperture radar(SAR) requires the ultra high resolution performance in detecting and precisely identifying the targets. In this paper, as a technique for enhancing the radar range resolution, the wideband chirp connection algorithm is presented by stitching the several chirp modules with unit bandwidth based on the linear frequency modulated chirp signal waveform. The principles of the digital chirp signal generation and its architecture for implementation is briefly described, and the wideband chirp signal generator, modulator, and demodulator are designed. The performance analysis for the presented algorithm is given with the simulation results.

  • A new method for simultaneous multiple transmit focusing using orthogonal weighted FM chirp is proposed. Weighted chirp signals focused at different depths are transmitted at the same time. These chirp signals are mutually orthogonal in the approximate sense that the autocorrelation function of each signal has a narrow mainlobe width and low sidelobe levels, and the crosscorrellation function of any pair of the signals has smaller values than the sidelobe levels of each autocorrelation function. This means that each weighted chirp signal can be separately compressed into a short pulse, focused individually and combined with other focused beams to form a frame of image. Theoretically, any two chirp signals defined in two nonoverlapped frequency bands are mutually orthogonal. In the present work, however, a fractional overlap of adjacent frequency bands, by up to 25%, were permitted to design more chirp signals within a given transducer bandwidth. The crosscorrelation values due to the frequency overlap could be reduced by alternating the direction of frequency sweep of the adjacent chirp signals. The simulation results show that this method can improve the lateral resolution of image without sacrifice in the frame rate compared with the conventional pulse system.

  • The performance of conventional direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) systems is decreased under environments such as additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN), channel distortion and interference noise due to multiple access user. By means of this parameter, auto correlation value of pseudo noise spreading sequence is decreased at receiver. This techniques which are based on correlation of between signature waveform signal. In this paper, to improve correlation property, we proposed the binary chirp DS-CDMA techniques which combine the DS-CDMA and chirp modulation. The proposed system which is based on binary chirp symbol has a good correlation value. Thus, we called BC DS-CDMA. To evaluate the system's performance, we compare the performance of the proposed systems with DS-CDMA systems under AWGN channel and halogen noise which exists on the powerline. The simulation results show that the proposed method has better performance than conventional technique.

  • Background and Objectives: The aim of the study was to compare effects of tone-burst (TB) and narrow-band (NB) Claus Elberling (CE)-chirp stimuli on amplitude, latency and interaural asymmetry ratio (IAR) of cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (cVEMP) in healthy individuals. Subjects and Methods: The study included 50 healthy volunteers. cVEMP procedure was carried out using 500 Hz TB and NB-CE-chirp stimulus (360-720 Hz, up-chirp) in random order. cVEMP were recorded at 100 dB nHL. For each ear and each stimulus, P1 latency, N1 latency and P1N1 amplitude were measured. IAR was also calculated. Results: Mean age was 26.66±9.48 years. cVEMP's in response to both TB and NB CE-chirp stimuli were obtained in all subjects. No statistically significant difference in P1 latency, N1 latency, and P1N1 amplitude was found between the right and left ears for both TB and NB CE-chirp stimuli (p>0.05). In both sides, P1 and N1 latencies were significantly shorter in NB CE-chirp stimulation compared to TB stimulation (p=0.000). In both sides, no statistically significant difference was found in P1N1 amplitude between two types of stimuli (p>0.05). Conclusions: The chirp stimulus produces robust but earlier cVEMP than TB does. This largest series study on NB chirp cVEMP shows that NB chirp is a good and new reliable alternative.
