This expermintal study is intended to investigate he development of flank wear in turning os SUS304 which is used in industrial applications and is acknowledged as a machining difficult material. In cutting process, change of velocity, change of feed, and change of depth of cut were investigated about the effect of flank wear, and slenderness ratio is also investigated. The variations of unit cutting force with the change of rake angle and the change of uncut chip area are observed. The friction angles are calculated for the change friction force and observed. The friction angles are calculated for the change friction force and normal forcd on the different rake angles. From this experimental study, the following results can be said. 1. Under the high cutting speed condition, the flaank wear is affected by the feed and depth of cut, but the influence of feed and depth of cut to the flank wear is reduced when the velocity is low. 2. The smaller slenderness ratio is, the shorter the tool life results in high cutting speed, and the lower cutting speed is, the lower the effect of slenderness ratio to the flank wear is. 3. Using the characteristics of force-RMS, the flank wear of a tool can be detected. There are almost no differences between the RMS characteristics of cutting force and feed force.

This paper presents some physical evidences indicating that reduced friction occurs in an cryogenic machining process, in which LN2 is applied selectively in well-controlled jets to the selected cutting zone. In machining tests, cryogenic machining reduced the force component in the feed direction, indicating that the chip slides on the tool rake face with lower friction. This study also found that the effectiveness of LN2 lubrication depends on the approach how LN2 is applied regarding cutting forces related.

In end milling process the undeformed chip thickness and the cutting force components vary periodically with phase change of the tool. In this study, up end milling process is transformed to the equivalent oblique cutting. The varying undeformed chip thickness and the cutting force components in end milling process are replaced with the equivalent average ones. Then it can be possible to analyze the chip-tool friction and shear process in the shear plane of the end milling process by the equivalent oblique cutting system. According to this analysis, when cutting Inconel 718, 61, 64 and 55% of the total energy is consumed in the shear process with the helix angle 30$^{\circ}$, 40$^{\circ}$ and 50$^{\circ}$ respectively, and the balance is consumed in the friction process. With the helix angle of 40$^{\circ}$ the specific cutting energy consumed is smaller than with the helix angle 30$^{\circ}$ and 50$^{\circ}$.

The impact of PVD coatings can be summed up in practical terms: this technology historically complements the best designed tool substrates to enhance cutting performance. PVD coatings are now incorporated in 25% of all HSS tools. The functionality is to extend the machining speed range, improve wear resistance at the cutting edge, and reduce friction at chip/tool contact areas to allow easier chip evacuation. These translate to a larger safe zone, as discussed in the failure mode diagram, for better productivity and higher reliability in machining operations of the customer. PVD coatings therefore represent an enabling technology that extends the application range of cutting tools in response to modern industrial needs. PVD coatings prolong the product life cycle of HSS tools and help this "mature" material to hold its territory against the advent of the newer hardmetal and ceramic tool materials. There is a lot of competitive life left particularly in PVD coated HSS endmills, drills, threading/tapping tools. PM HSS technology further increases the possibilities.ibilities.

In end milling process, undeformed chip thickness and cutting force vary periodically with phase change of the tool. Recently, a model has been proposed to simulate the shear and friction characteristics of an up-end milling process in terms of the equivalent oblique cutting to this. In the current study, the varying undeformed chip thickness and the cutting forces in a down-end milling process have been replaced with the equivalent ones of oblique cutting. And, the down-end milling characteristics of SM45C has been compared with that of the up-end milling previously presented with different helix angles.

This study was undertaken to investigate the cutting behaviour of super duralumin (A2024-T3) with sintered carbide tool(P20). The cutting test was carried out under different conditions such as cutting speed, cutting depth and rake angle, etc. The specific cutting force Kc and Kt of vertical and radial forces decreases as cutting speed increases, especially the decrease rate of Kt becomes larger than of Kc as cutting speed increases. Kc and Kt in small cutting depth are much affected by work-hardening of surface layer. The chip width and shear angle become layer as cutting depth increases, especially chip width at feed of 0.1mm almost approaches cutting width. Relation between the friction coefficient of chip side and tool rake angle side can make the modelization studying the built-up edge size. The shear angle model equation of super duralumin generally agree with theory of Ernst-Merchant.

Cooling lubricants are used in machining operations in order to reduce friction at the tool-chip and tool-workpiece interfaces, cool both chip and tool, and remove chip. Furthermore, they influence a strong effect on the shearing mechanisms and, consequently, on the machined surface quality and tool wear. However, several researchers state that the costs related to cutting fluids is frequently higher than those related to cutting tools. Moreover, the cooling lubricants cause an increase in both worker's health and social problems related to their use and correct disposal. Therefore, many researchers have focused on the environmentally conscious machining technologies. One of the technologies is known as MQL(Minimum Quantity Lubrication) machining. In this paper, an experimental model to obtain the optimal cutting conditions in MQL turning was suggested, and the effects of cutting conditions on surface roughness and cutting force were analyzed. For these purposes, FFD (Fractional Factorial Design) and RSM (Response Surface Methods) were used for the experiment. Cutting force and surface roughness with different cutting conditions were measured through the external cylindrical turning of Al 6061 based on the experiment plan. The measured data were analyzed by regression analysis and verification experiments with random conditions were conducted to confirm the suggested experimental model.

This paper discusses the minimum cutting thickness with a continuous chip in sub-micrometer order precision diamond cutting. An ultra precision cutting model is proposed, in which the tool edge radius and the friction coefficient are the principal factors determining the minimum cutting thickness. The experimental results verify the proposed model and provide various supporting evidence. In order to reduce the minimum cutting thickness a vibration cutting method is applied, and the effects are investigated through a series of experiments under the same conditions as conventional cutting method.

In high speed cutting process, due to the friction between the tool and workpiece, a temperature rise of contacting part is serious. It need to develop cutting tool for overcoming such a poor condition. So now, some studies, the optimization of tool shapes, the fine grains of tool material, multi-layer coating of tools are processing. If mirror finishing on the tool is processed, there is advantage of relation between chip and tool, because of less friction, and also tool's lift would be increased. As a result mirror like finishing is expected efficient enhancement of tool. Generally, it is too difficult to process by a general way for tools of complex shapes, it is required a new method to process such complex shape tools. The magnetic fluid polishing technique can polish the workpiece of complex shape, because the polishing method which polishes as compress the workpiece by the magnetism abrasives to arrange to the linear according to the line of magnetic force. In this paper, We polished the surface of the high speed cutting tool using the magnetic fluid polishing technique, to enhance the performance of the high speed cutting tool.
