For this descriptive research job stress, compassion satisfaction, and compassion fatigue were examined as to their relationship to burnout in nurses from children's hospital. Methods: The participants were 305 nurses working in children's hospital. Self-report questionnaires were used to measure job stress, compassion satisfaction, compassion fatigue and burnout. Results: Nurses in children's hospital experienced a greater than moderate degree of job stress, compassion satisfaction, compassion fatigue and burnout, whereas differences existed according to general characteristics. Job stress, compassion fatigue and burnout showed a significant positive correlation and results of compassion fatigue and burnout were similar. Also, job stress, compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue were associated with burnout in nurses working in children's hospital. Conclusion: Findings indicate that as longer work experience is accompanied by higher job stress and burnout, it is necessary to develop intervention programs to reduce burnout among career nurses exposed to greater job stress in children's hospital.

This study focused on the nurse's need for the ward in children's hospital. The nurse stay longer than any users in hospital and their treatment have to be based on deep understanding of their patients. The survey research followed the literature review on the children's hospital and the nurses' task and behavior. 119 nurses answered the structural questionnaire and their answers were analyzed using the statistical process such as basic descriptive statistics, ANOVA, and actor analysis. Results and conclusions are as follows. (2) The Subject regarded the patients' room to a private place of the patients and their caregivers not to the work places. (3) The design factors of the nursing station were classified into four: the functionality-, the privacy-, the supervision-and the restfulness-factor. The functionality and supervision factor were highly required as a workplace, the privacy factor between the patients, their caregivers and subject were also represented high score, but the restfulness factor were least required.

Methods: In depth interviews with 10 nurses working at pediatric units were conducted using semi-structured questionnaires, and data were analyzed using a thematic analysis. Results: Main themes were categorized as attributes of nurse-child trust and influencing factors. Attributes of trust can be divided into definition and characteristics of nurse-child trust. Nurses perceived nurse-child trust were not coercive, and changeable mutual relationship needing time and effort, and helpful for child's hospital adaptation and child's participation for care. There existed facilitating factors and interfering factors in developing nurse-child trust. Conclusion: The findings of this study would help nurses who are caring children in a hospital setting re-shape their points of views on 'trust between nurses and children' in day to day practice. It is also hoped that these results contribute to develop nursing guidelines on trust building with children in hospital in future.

  • Purpose: To identify the relationship between emotional labor, self-efficacy, and partnership with parents in nurses working at children's hospital, and to examine the factors that influence partnership of nurses with parents. Methods: Participants were 208 nurses working at nine children's hospitals in D and G metropolitan cities in J province. Data were collected using structured self-report questionnaires. Results: Partnership with parents showed a significant positive correlation with emotional labor (r=.43, p<.001) and self-efficacy (r=.47, p<.001). Furthermore, emotional labor and self-efficacy had influence on partnership with parents. The total explanatory power of this model was of 31.4%. Conclusion: Considering that children's parents and other family members usually stay with them in hospitals, a concrete system needs to be developed to manage the emotional labor of nurses. Ultimately, direct and indirect intervention programs, with emotional labor and self-efficacy at the core, should be developed and implemented to enhance the partnership of nurses and parents.

  • Purpose: Epilepsy is the most common neurological disorder in childhood. Hospital nurses, who are the first to recognize seizures in epilepsy patients in the ward environment, possess expertise related to epilepsy and play a central role in epilepsy management. The purpose of this study was to develop an algorithm-based education program and to improve nurses' knowledge and self-efficacy related to providing nursing care to children with epilepsy. Methods: The education program consisted of lectures on the definition, cause, classification, diagnosis, treatment, and nursing of epilepsy based on a booklet, as well as practice using an algorithm for nursing interventions when a child experiences a seizure. Twenty-seven nurses working at pediatric neurological wards and a pediatric emergency room participated in the education program. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the paired t-test. Results: Nurses' knowledge and self-efficacy showed a statistically significant improvement after participation in the education program on nursing care for children with epilepsy. Conclusion: The application of this education program for hospital setting is expected to improve nurses' capability to care for children with epilepsy, thereby contributing to a higher quality of nursing.
