  • This study examined pathways from maternal parenting behavior to adolescents' internet addiction through both self-control and depression/anxiety. Participants were 449 $8^{th}$ and $9^{th}$ graders in Seoul. They completed questionnaires on maternal parenting behavior, adolescents' self-control, depression/anxiety, and internet addiction. Data were analyzed by structural equation modeling. Maternal parenting behavior indirectly influenced adolescents' internet addiction through self-control and depression/anxiety. Self-control and depression/anxiety individually mediated between maternal parenting behavior and internet addition. However, maternal parenting behavior didn't directly affect adolescents' internet addiction. Self-control was influenced by maternal parenting behavior and also played a crucial role in preventing adolescents' internet addiction.

  • Objective: To prevent adolescent drinking and smoking, this study proposed a strategy based on the ecological perspective. Methods: The study applied multilevel moderated logistic regression analysis on nationally representative individual-level (2,046 9th grade adolescents) and neighborhood-level (92 geographic areas) data. Results: There was a positive association between risky neighborhood environments (e.g., rate of smoking, drinking, and presence of saloon/bars accommodation) and rates of adolescent drinking and smoking. Furthermore, the interplay between risky neighborhood environments and school adjustment pointed to a possible protective effect of a high level of school adjustment in predicting smoking and drinking among adolescents. Conclusion: Findings highlighted the importance of considering multiple neighborhood social contexts surrounding adolescents to understand their risky behavior. Furthermore, positive intervention strategies that focus on adolescents' positive development within the school domain may act to protect adolescents from harmful neighborhood environments.

  • In this paper, the effects of parental neglect and abuse on school adjustment mediated by social withdrawal in adolescents were examined using a sample of 2,163 second grade middle school students(1,096 boys and 1,067 girls) from the Korean Child and Youth Panel Survey(KCYPS) data set. All research variables were measured using self-reported questionnaires. They were analyzed by means of Structural Equation Modeling. The results indicated that parents' abuse had no direct effect, but there was an indirect effect on adolescents' school adjustment mediated by adolescents' social withdrawal. Parental neglect had a direct effect on adolescents' school adjustment and also had an indirect effect on adolescents' school adjustment mediated by social withdrawal. The results indicate that parental neglect is a more significant contributor than adolescents' social withdrawal on adolescents' school adjustment. The results of this study show that parenting attitude, more specifically parental neglect, tend to be more important factors on school adjustment compared to adolescents' psychological problems, such as social withdrawal in adolescence. Taken together, these findings suggest that interventions aimed at improving parental neglect and adolescents' social withdrawal need to be emphasized if adolescents are to better adjust to school life.

  • Objectives : The objective of this study was to compare the parent-child relationship of adolescents with depression and those without depression, by using Parent-Child Relationship Instrument (PCRI), Family Relationship Scale (FRS), and Parenting Attitude Test-Youth (PAT-Y). We also investigated the association between the parent-child relationship and depressive symptoms. Methods : Twenty-five adolescents with depression (age $15.0{\pm}2.1years$, 8 boys) and 24 adolescents without depression (age $13.7{\pm}1.3years$, 16 boys) completed the Adolescent-General Behavior Inventory (A-GBI), Adolescent-Mood Disorder Questionnaire (A-MDQ), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), PCRI, and PAT-Y. The parents of subjects completed the Child Behavior Checklist, Parent-General Behavior Inventory 10-item Mania Scale (P-GBI-10M), Parent-Mood Disorder Questionnaire, and FRS. Independent t-tests, analysis of covariance, and partial correlation analysis were used. Results : The Intimacy (p=.002) and Respect (p=.029) scores of the PCRI were significantly higher in adolescents without depression compared to those with depression. The Intimacy scores of the PCRI showed negative correlation with the BDI and P-GBI-10M and the Strictness scores of the PCRI showed positive correlation with the A-GBI, A-MDQ, and BDI. The Inconsistency, Punishment, and Excessive Expectation scores of the PAT-Y showed positive correlation with the A-GBI and BDI scores. Conclusion : Our results suggest a possible association of the parent-children relationship and parenting attitude with adolescents' depressive symptoms.

To develop such assessment tools, the literature related to this issue was reviewed, and in order to reflect Korea specific social and cultural characteristics, 198 children and adolescents and 104 parents were interviewed in depth. The questionnaires were classified as objective tools and subjective tools by means of a content validity test by experts and a verification by preliminary survey. Objective tools are defined as those which are used by professionals to check facts based on laws and institutions. 20 objective questionnaires were created and completed. In contrast, subjective tools were used to check the subjective perceptions of children, adolescents and parents on their community environments. Subjective tools were collected as the basis for the data for construct validity and was calculated to verify the validity. For this purpose, 432 children and adolescents between 11 and 18 and 201 parents living in Seoul, Daejeon and Hwaseong (n=633) were surveyed. Subjective tools, 33 questions in 6 areas were created and completed for parents and for children and adolescents, 30 questions in 5 areas were created and completed.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the moderating effects of mother-adolescent communication time on the relationship between maternal meta-emotion philosophy, adolescent psychological adjustment and depression. The participants for this study comprised 181 first and second grade high school students and their mothers, residing in Seoul. The results of the analyses indicated that, (a) maternal disapproving is negatively correlated to adolescents' positive world views, and that maternal laissez-faire is also negatively correlated to adolescents' emotional responsiveness. However, a positive correlation is revealed between maternal emotion-coaching and adolescents' positive self-esteem. (b) It is evident that adolescents' emotional responsiveness is influenced by maternal laissez-faire, and that adolescents' positive self-esteem is influenced by emotion-coaching. It also indicated that mother-adolescent communication time is influenced by dismissing as well as laissez-faire meta-emotion philosophy. (c) It revealed that mother-adolescent communication time, in part, has a meaningful moderating effect on the relationship between meta-emotion philosophy and adolescent depression. Therefore, the present study indicates that even if maternal disapproving, laissez-faire, or dismissing is practiced, adolescent depression levels decrease as mother-adolescent time lengthens.

Also, aim that identifies variables which have influences on adolescents' depression. The subjects were 2279 middle and high school students(male 1150, female 1129) who live in Seoul and Kyonggi. All respondents answered by self-report questionnaire. The scales of emotion regulation style consist of three parts: support-seeking, avoidance/distraction, and active problem-solving. Data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA, t-tset and stepwise multiple regression. The major findings were as follows. First, older male and female adolescents perceived less peer attachment than younger adolescents. Specially female adolescents showed more differences between older adolescents and younger adolescents. Second, male adolescents showed more avoidance/distraction style and active problem-solving style but less support-seeking style than female adolescents. Third, older adolescents perceived more depression than younger adolescents. Fourth, peer attachment, age, avoidance/distraction style, active problem-solving style, support-seeking style and gender had a significant effect on adolescents' depression. In other words, adolescents who had more avoidance/distraction style and support-seeking style, who had less peer attachment and active problem-solving style, who had more avoidance/distraction style and support-seeking style, who had less peer attachment and active problem-solving style, who was older adolescents than younger adolescents, and who was female adolescents than male adolescents perceived more depression. • The purpose of the present study was to develop a structural model, of which the effect of parents' psychological control, depressive dispositions, and depression upon the self-esteem of adolescents. The participants were 458 adolescents recruited from high schools and universities (M age = 17.4 yrs; SD = 1.75) in Seoul and its vicinity. Data were collected through self-reporting questionnaires for adolescents. Firstly, we estimated the hypothesized meditation model which includes paths from parents' psychological to self-esteem through adolescents' depressive experiences and depression. Structural Equation Modeling analysis using AMOS revealed that the hypothesized mediation model yielded an acceptable model fit and all hypothesized path coefficients were found to be significant. Specifically, it indicated that the more parents try to exert psychological control over their children, the more depressive experiences adolescents have and in turn, they had a greater tendency towards becoming depressed and having lower self esteem. It was also found that neither gender difference nor age difference existed in the structural model.

  • Objectives : It is known that adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often concurrently exhibit attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The objective of this study is to investigate how ADHD symptoms modify clinical characteristics in adolescents with ASD. Methods : Subjects were recruited from the Program for the Education Enrichment of Relational Skills program, which is a program for adolescents with ASD to promote and train social skills. The study participants and their parents completed the study questionnaires, such as the ADHD rating scale, Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, and Korean version of Child Behavior Checklist. Results : Adolescents with ASD and ADHD (N=19) were found to have more impaired sociality, less open communication with their parents, and more behavioral and emotional problems compared with adolescents with ASD, and without ADHD (N=28). Conclusion : Although further research is needed, the results of our study suggest that adolescents with ASD present different clinical characteristics when comorbid with ADHD.
