Bisphenol A (BPA), an environmental endocrine disrupter, enters the human body continuously in food and drink. Young children are likely to be more vulnerable than adults to chemical exposure due to the immaturities of their organ systems, rapid physical development, and higher ventilation, metabolic rates, and activity levels. The direct effect of BPA on peripheral tissue might also be of importance to the development of insulin resistance. However, the influence that BPA has on insulin signaling molecules in skeletal muscle has not been previously investigated. In this study, we examined the effect of BPA on fasting blood glucose (FBG) in post-weaned Wistar rats and on insulin signaling proteins in C2C12 skeletal muscle cells. Subsequently, we investigated the effects of BPA on insulin-mediated Akt phosphorylation in C2C12 myotubes. In rats, BPA treatment (0.1-1,000 ng/mL for 24 hours) resulted in the increase of FBG and plasma insulin levels, and reduced insulin-mediated Akt phosphorylation. Furthermore, the mRNA expression of insulin receptor (IR) was decreased after 24 hours of BPA treatment in C2C12 cells in a dose-dependent manner, whereas the mRNA levels of other insulin signaling proteins, including insulin receptor substrate-1 (IRS-1) and 5'-AMP-dependent protein kinase (AMPK), were unaffected. Treatment with BPA increased GLUT4 expression and protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B) activity in C2C12 myotubes, but not in protein levels. We conclude that exposure to BPA can induce insulin resistance by decreasing IR gene expression, which is followed by a decrease in insulin- mediated Akt activation and increased PTP1B activity.
The prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in Korea has been increasing in adults, as well as in adolescents. Recently the prevalence of MetS in children has been reported to strongly link that of MetS in parents. Families are known to share similar food environment so that eating habits of parents closely resemble that of the children's. Therefore, the aim of this study to examine metabolic risk factors and dietary intake in children by with respect to mother's metabolic syndrome, based on the data from Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) 2007-2010. Using the household variable and the eldest child per household, 1,341 pairs of mothers and children were selected. The mothers were defined by MetS criteria, and then the children were classified into the following three groups in accordance to the mothers' MetS; children whose mothers had none, 1-2, and 3 or more components of MetS. All dietary data were evaluated using the data from a food frequency questionnaire. The mean age was $42.6{\pm}4.2$ years for the mothers, and $14.9{\pm}2.0$ years for the children. Children whose mothers had 3 or more components of MetS showed a significantly higher prevalence of overweight and higher level of fasting triglyceride; conversely, they showed a lower level of serum HDL-cholesterol compared to the other two groups. Regarding an agreement of food consumption between the mothers and children, most food groups showed high agreement, except in the category of beverages. Regarding the dietary habits and family meals, children whose mothers had 3 or more components of MetS were more likely to skip breakfast and less likely to have family meals at breakfast or snack. In conclusion, the children's metabolic risk factors and dietary factors were different with respect to the status of mothers' MetS. Further studies are necessary to examine the causal effect of family environment in children's health status.

Response to Intervention (RTI), which is focused on the gap between pre-interventions and post-interventions, provides an effective intervention program. This study takes under-achievement factors into consideration to determine the overall characteristics of underachievers. The under-achievement factors include cognitive learning factors, affective factors, and environmental factors. This study conducted curriculum-based assessments, achievement tests, and assessments on attitudes toward science and science learning motivation to verify the effects of individually tailored teaching according to the types of under-achievement in science. The experimental group was composed of six students in fourth grade, and the comparison group had 23 students. The findings of the study were as follows. First, the performance and progress of underachievers in the first-stage showed little progress and did not reach grade-level performance. Second, the underachievers in the second-stage greatly improved. In particular, the average of eight sessions in the second-step demonstrated performance beyond that of the regular child. Third, individually tailored teaching according to the types of under-achievement in science positively affected attitudes toward science and science learning motivation. This study will contribute to the improvement of the underachiever by applying individually tailored teaching according to the types of under-achievement in science.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships among poverty, family structure and functioning, burdens of adult roles and socio-emotional problems. It was especially focused on the relationship between the burden of adult roles and socioemotional problems among children in poverty. The Structural Equation model was employed for analyses. The Theoretical model was established based on previous researches related to poverty and adult roles (for example, parentification and parentified children). Data came from the first wave of 'Seoul Panel Study of Children; SPSC' and subjects consisted of 1,807 4th grade elementary school students and their parents who were located at K-Gu in Seoul. The survey was carried out from October 25th to November 20th in 2005. The Results of the Structural Equation model were congruent with the theoretical expectations. To find a more appropriate model, three kinds of structural models were hypothesized and analysed. In the most appropriate model which had a good model fit, poverty and family structure impacted on socio-emotional problems directly and indirectly. The relationship between poverty and socio-emotional problems was mediated by family functioning and burdens of adult roles. The same mediation process existed between family structure and socio-emotional problems also. In brief, children in poverty or those who have a single parent are more likely to have impaired family functioning, which is likely to cause higher burdens of adult roles. In turn, those who have higher burdens of adult roles are more likely to have socioemotional problems. In conclusion, various theoretical and practical implications for social work practice focusing on the burdens of adult roles or caretaker roles among children in poverty were discussed.
This study aims to discover patterns of Korean women's life course in terms of their life time sequence of family roles and economic activity. Primary factors for the change and diversity of family-work role sequence are also examined. Data used in this study is the Fourth Survey of Korean Women's Economic Activity which was conducted by Korean Institute of Women Development (KIWD) in 2002. According to the main results, five distinctive patterns of life course are to be disentangled for ever married women: First, doing simultaneously family and work roles with no maternal leave (13.7%); second, reentry into labor market after maternal leave (M type, 18.6%); third, no reentry into labor market after maternal leave (latent M type, 26.9%); fourth, first job entry after child rearing (23.5%); and finally, no work experience (17.3%). The relative composition of the respective life course has changed over marriage cohorts. M type including latent M type became a dominant life pattern among married women since marriage cohorts of 1980 and later. The share of married women who begin to work first after maternal role or have no work experience has declined with recent marriage cohorts. It is also noted that the share of women with simultaneous family and work roles has increased among marital cohorts of 1990 and later. Marriage cohort differences being controlled, life patterns significantly differ by women's educational level, existence of role model of working mother at growth, women's own and husbands' gender role attitude, and family economy. Finally, some policy concerns for gender role division of family and work are raised.
The study attempted to articulate standpoints towards compulsory education system based on schooling age and year in careful considerations with the gifted. For these ends, literatures were reviewed and various education laws, regulations and documents and related law reports and judicial decisions were investigated. Literature review was conducted to develop that ideas of rights to compulsory education for regular students are closely related to those for gifted. Structures of general education laws and gifted education law and regulations were compared. Later, limitations of compulsory education were discussed when it was applied for the gifted. In conclusions, it is inappropriate that the gifted are ruled by compulsory education system based on schooling age. If compulsory education system is designated to provide an effective opportunity for all students, it should be duties and rights to enter elementary schools at schooling age. However, it appeared that the duties and rights to enter elementary schools at certain schooling ages function as inhibitors against the gifted with giftedness and potentials far beyond those of regular students. Therefore, the gifted should be separately ruled under flexible systems of compulsory education if their achievement level is assessed as sufficient to enter elementary schools before schooling age. On the other hand, legal systems of compulsory education are gradually evolved to flexible systems. However, it is necessary to establish social atmosphere and support system of educational administration in order to practice the flexible system of compulsory education for the gifted.

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the autonomic imbalance in syncope by comparing the baseline heart rate variability (HRV) between healthy children and those with vasovagal syncope. Methods: To characterize the autonomic profile in children experiencing vasovagal syncope, we evaluated the HRV of 23 patients aged 7-18 years and 20 healthy children. These children were divided into preadolescent (<12 years) and adolescent groups. The following time-domain indices were calculated: root mean square of the successive differences (RMSSD); standard deviation of all average R-R intervals (SDNN); and frequency domain indices including high frequency (HF), low frequency (LF), normalized high frequency, normalized low frequency, and low frequency to high frequency ratio (LF/HF). Results: HRV values were significantly different between healthy children and those with syncope. Student t test indicated significantly higher SNDD values (60.46 ms vs. 37.42 ms, P =0.003) and RMSSD (57.90 ms vs. 26.92 ms, P=0.000) in the patient group than in the control group. In the patient group, RMSSD (80.41 ms vs. 45.89 ms, P =0.015) and normalized HF (61.18 ms vs. 43.19 ms, P =0.022) were significantly higher in adolescents, whereas normalized LF (38.81 ms vs. 56.76 ms, P =0.022) and LF/HF ratio (0.76 vs. 1.89, P =0.041) were significantly lower in adolescents. In contrast, the control group did not have significant differences in HRV values between adolescents and preadolescents. Conclusion: The results of this study indicated that children with syncope had a decreased sympathetic tone and increased vagal tone compared to healthy children. Additionally, more severe autonomic imbalances possibly occur in adolescents than in preadolescents.

This paper provides a database about the IPTV VOD usage behavior of children as well as mother's perception at home. We analyzed the correlation of mother's background with IPTV VOD using time of children through a survey. We analyzed how does the mother's background influences usage time of IPTV VOD for children through a survey. The survey was conducted by 500 mothers who have two to seven years old children with IPTV users in Korea. Compilation of the data reveals that 1) 36.6% of the children have watched IPTV VOD for the first time at two years old, 93.4% have encountered by family members among them. 40.8% of users have played IPTV VOD for children four days a week and the main genre was the animation. 2) The main reason for watching VOD was by the needs of their children, but the 66% of mothers concern for an excessive level of watching. 3) educational background of mother and monthly house income were significantly correlated with the usage time of IPTV VOD for children.

Tooth anklylosis is defined as the adhesion state of alveolar bone to dentin or cementum. Trauma, disturbed metabolic disease, and congenital disease have been given as etiologic factors. Complications of tooth ankylosis are tipping of the neighboring teeth, space loss, and supraeruption of the opposing teeth. Particularly if dental ankylosis occurs in maxillary incisors of a growing child, the ankylosed tooth can not move vertically with subsequent disturbance in vertical growth of the alveolar process. With an appropriate treatment approach, an esthetic condition must be achieved especially in the maxillary anterior region. In this report, two cases are presented which were treated by the surgical repositioning method. One is treated by alveolar bone distraction osteogenesis which used a tooth-borne type distraction device and the other by single tooth osteotomy.

Objective : The purpose of this study is to provide an evidence for clinical practice by systemic analysis on occupational therapy interventions for improvement of children's play. Methods : Articles used in this study were collected from database of Pubmed, ProQuest, EBSCOhost, Scopus, RISS, KISS, and National Library of Korea. The key words used in the search were "Play AND Occupational Therapy AND (Intervention OR Treatment)" and the publication period was limited from January 2007 to April 2017. 11 articles in total were selected for the systematic review analysis. Results : The results revealed that the majority of studies was one-group non-randomized study and the majority of intervention used was play-based intervention in case of that play itself was the intervention goal. The most frequently used environment for the intervention was parallel setting of home and treatment room. The majority of studies was for children with ADHD and the most commonly used assessment tool was Test of Playfulness (ToP). Dependent variables measured along with play were language skills, social interactive skills, communication and pragmatic skills, problem-solving skills, caregiver responsiveness, and parent-child interaction. Conclusion : This study help to understand the current state of occupational therapy intervention for improvement of children's play. Starting with the understanding, it is expected that various studies on play of children will be done in the future.
