  • We have carried out Pearson-type chi-square tests on the orientation data of joints from different depths in order to estimate the homogeneity of joint orientations obtained from a borehole. The orientation data of joints were collected from two non-foliated massive rocks of granitic gneisses in South Korea since orientations of joints in folded metamorphic rocks, for example, are controlled by foliation and also changes as the orientations of foliation change by folding. Borehole images were used for the analysis of the orientations of individual joints. The orientation data were subdivided into the upper level data and lower level data. The data from these two levels are plotted on the patch net consisting of 21 orientation patches. Then, the two patterns on the patch net were analyzed using a contingency table. From the chi-square test on the data collected from two sites, we found that some data sets show statistically meaningful differences in orientations of joints. Since joints are one of the important parameters in determining the physical properties of rock masses, in situ investigation of joints are desirable in the geotechnical investigation and also in design of subsurface structures (e.g. tunnels and underground storages).

  • In fitting models to data, selection of the most desirable estimation method and determination of the adequacy of fitted model are the central issues. This paper compares the maximum likelihood estimators and the minimum logit chi-square estimators, both being best asymptotically normal, when logit models are fitted to infant mortality data. Chi-square goodness-of-fit test and likelihood ratio one are also compared. The analysis infant mortality data shows that the outlying observations do not necessarily result in the same impact on goodness-of-fit measures.

  • In previous nuclear genomic association studies, Random Forests (RF), one of several up-to-date machine learning methods, has been used successfully to generate evidence of association of genetic polymorphisms with diseases or other phenotypes. Compared with traditional statistical analytic methods, such as chi-square tests or logistic regression models, the RF method has advantages in handling large numbers of predictor variables and examining gene-gene interactions without a specific model. Here, we applied the RF method to find the association between mitochondrial single nucleotide polymorphisms (mtSNPs) and diabetes risk. The results from a chi-square test validated the usage of RF for association studies using mtDNA. Indexes of important variables such as the Gini index and mean decrease in accuracy index performed well compared with chi-square tests in favor of finding mtSNPs associated with a real disease example, type 2 diabetes.

  • The real-time detection of malware remains an open issue, since most of the existing approaches for malware categorization focus on improving the accuracy rather than the detection time. Therefore, finding a proper balance between these two characteristics is very important, especially for such sensitive systems. In this paper, we present a fast portable executable (PE) malware detection system, which is based on the analysis of the set of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) called by a program and some technical PE features (TPFs). We used an efficient feature selection method, which first selects the most relevant APIs and TPFs using the chi-square ($KHI^2$) measure, and then the Phi (${\varphi}$) coefficient was used to classify the features in different subsets, based on their relevance. We evaluated our method using different classifiers trained on different combinations of feature subsets. We obtained very satisfying results with more than 98% accuracy. Our system is adequate for real-time detection since it is able to categorize a file (Malware or Benign) in 0.09 seconds.

  • The GPS/INS integration system navigation can provide improved navigation performance and has been widely used as a main navigation system for military and commercial vehicles. When two navigation systems are tightly coupled and the structure is complicated, a fault in either the GPS or the INS can lead to a disastrous failure of the whole integration system. This paper proposes a real-time fault detection method for an AGPS/INS integration system. The proposed fault detection method comprises a BIT and a fault detection algorithm based on chi-square test. It is implemented by real-time software modules to apply the AGPS/INS integration system and van test is carried out to evaluate its performance.

  • An adaptive estimation and testing method is proposed for comparing dispersions among several ordered groups. Based upon the large sampling theory for nonparametric quartile estimators, we derive the order restricted estimators and construct a simple test statistic. This test statistic has a mixture of several chi-square distributions as its asymptotic null distribution. The proposed test is illustratively applied to survival time data for the patients with carcinoma of the oropharynx.

  • Using the wave data by typhoons LEE, VERA, THELMA which gave great damages in the Korean penisula, the significant waves based on zero-up & down crossing and Tucker-Draper method are compared with those from the wave energy spectrum. And the histograms of individual waves obtained from zero-up crossing method are presented and compared with the Rayleigh, Weibull, Gluhovski, Ibrageemov and Goda distributions, and also the Chi-square goodness of fit test is applied to each theoretical distributions. It is shown that the significant wave heights by zero-up crossing method are very well agreed to those by energy spectrum method. The wave heights are found to well follow the Rayleigh and Goda distributions by the Chi-square test.

  • In this study, monthly and seasonal dissolved oxygen trends of 19 water quality measurement stations in Sapgyo stream watershed were analyzed using monthly dissolved oxygen (DO) data measured for 16 years (1995~2010). Mann-Kendall trend test and Sen's slope estimator were carried out for trend analysis. Furthermore, Sapgyo stream watershed was divided into four different sections (Sapgyo stream, Muhan stream, Gykgyo stream, and Sapgyo lake) and chi-square test of homogeneity for DO trend was carried out for four different sections. The study results indicated that most of water quality measurement stations showed increasing or non-significant trend of DO on a monthly and seasonal basis. The chi-square test of homogeneity for each water quality measurement station showed the statistical homogeneity in seasonal DO trend; however, the test results showed the statistical non-homogeneity in monthly DO trend for the stations located in the reservoir. Overall, the dissolved oxygen trend in each water quality measurement station showed different patterns depending on the location of each station and season.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of Tai Chi exercise program (Sun style 12 forms) on anxiety, powerlessness, self-esteem in community-dwelling elderly women. Methods: With a quasi-experimental design, a nonequivalent control group pretest-post test was used. Elderly women who agreed to participate in the study were assigned into an experimental group (n=23), or a control group (n=23). The experimental group participated in Tai Chi exercise program for 50 minutes per session, 2 times a week for 11 weeks. Tai Chi exercise program consisted of 10 minutes for warm-up, 35 minutes for main session, and 5 minutes for cooling down exercises. Anxiety, powerlessness, and self-esteem were measured with questionnaires to evaluate the effect of Tai Chi exercise program. The data were analyzed by using Chi-square test, Fisher's exact test, and Mann-Whitney test by a SPSS WIN 12.0 program. Results: The experimental group showed significant improvement for self-esteem (z=-3.130, p=.002), powerlessness(z=-3.267, p=.001), and anxiety (z=-2.932, p=.003) when compared to control group, Conclusions: Tai chi exercise program may be an effective nursing intervention to improve self-esteem and to reduce powerlessness and anxiety in community-dwelling elderly women.

  • Chi-square test based on large sample theory is inappropriate for testing the row homogeneity in two-way contingency table with several sparse cells. For that case, exact testing methods has been developed in the literature and implemented in StatXact(1991). However, considerable computing time is inevitable for moderate size tables. So, Monte Carlo approximation is recommended frequently. In this study, we propose a simple algorithm for generating two-way random tables with fixed row and column margins for small sample chi-square test. Also, we develop “Turkey-type” method for multiple between-row comparisons.
