  • Purpose: To evaluate the reliability of preoperative and postoperative distal metatarsal articular angle (DMAA) measurements and to determine whether such reliability is different in accordance with the foot and ankle fellowship and the number of years in practice. Materials and Methods: Between July 2012 and June 2014, a total of 20 patients (24 feet) were treated with proximal chevron osteotomy and distal soft tissue procedure for symptomatic hallux valgus deformity. DMAA were measured twice with an interval of two weeks between the preoperative and postoperative dorsoplantar radiographs by four observers; two of whom were foot and ankle surgeons (A and B), one knee surgeon, and one senior resident. The intraobserver reproducibility and interobserver reliability were assessed by intraclass correlation coefficients. Moreover, the limit of agreement between the preoperative and postoperative DMAA measurements were assessed using a Bland-Altman plot. Results: The intraobserver reproducibility of the foot and ankle surgeon A, knee surgeon, and senior resident improved from 0.796, 0.575, and 0.586 preoperatively to 0.968, 0.864, and 0.864 postoperatively, respectively. The interobserver reliability of foot and ankle surgeon A-B, foot and ankle surgeon A-knee surgeon, and foot and ankle surgeon A-senior resident improved from 0.874, 0.688, and 0.677 preoperatively to 0.971, 0.917, and 0.838 postoperatively, respectively. Conclusion: The intra- and interobserver reliabilities for DMAA measurement improved after proximal chevron osteotomy. Therefore, the necessity of additional procedures to correct the increased DMAA should be reevaluated after proximal chevron osteotomy in the hallux valgus with an increased DMAA.

  • Purpose: To present our experience of distal chevron osteotomy utilizing one BOLD $screw^{(R)}$ as an alternative fixation method which has advantages over the Kirschner (K)-wire fixation. Materials and Methods: Between January 2001 and June 2003, 19 patients with a symptomatic hallux valgus deformity underwent 20 distal metatarsal chevron osteotomies with one BOLD $screw^{(R)}$ fixation. The mean age was 55.6 years with a minimum follow up period 12 months. For radiographical evaluation, hallux valgus angle (HVA) and intermetatarsal angle (IMA) were used. For clinical evaluation, we used AOFAS hallux metatarsophalangeal interphalangeal scale and overall satisfaction of the patients. Results: The AOFAS scores improved from mean 47.5 points to mean 68.1 points at postoperative 3 months and mean 86.0 points at last follow-up. The average HVA corrected from 25.3 degrees to 12.7 degrees. The IMA was corrected from 11.6 degrees to 7.6 degrees. The overall satisfaction of the patients was 85%. There was no major complication. Conclusion: We demonstrated that distal chevron osteotomy with one BOLD $screw^{(R)}$ fixation has advantages such as no additional procedure, no loss of correction, early rehabilitation, no prominent hardware and skin irritation. This method also showed excellent bone union, correction and patient satisfaction.

  • Heat transfer enhancement of three types of brazed plate heat exchangers has been evaluated experimentally. The effects of flow resonance in a plate heat exchanger on the heat transfer rate and pressure drop have been investigated in a wide range of mass flow rates in detail. The problem is of particular interest in the innovative design of a plate heat exchanger by flow resonance. The results obtained indicate that both heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop are increased as mass flow rate is increased, as expected. It is also found that the heat transfer enhancement is increased with an increase in the plate pitch, while the heat transfer is decreased with a decrease in the chevron angle. Pressure drop also increased with an increase in the plate pitch and with a decrease in the chevron angle. Heat transfer enhancement in the plate heat exchangers is maximized by flow resonance and the resonance frequency of the present plate heat exchangers is found to be in the range of $10~15\;Hz$.

  • A numerical feasibility study was conducted to investigate the thermal-hydraulic characteristics of a steam generator with corrugated plates for a small modular reactor. Accordingly, a one-dimensional thermal-hydraulic analysis code was developed based on the existing state-of-the-art thermal-hydraulic models and correlations for corrugated plate heat exchangers. Subsequently, the pressure loss, heat transfer, and instability characteristics of the steam generator with corrugated plates were investigated according to the chevron angle and mass flux. Additionally, the characteristics of rectangular and disk-type corrugated plate steam generators with equivalent heat transfer areas were analyzed. The steam generator with disk-type corrugated plates exhibited better performance in terms of pressure loss and heat transfer rate than the rectangular type. In addition, when the mass flux decreased from the onset of boiling points, reverse gradients of the total pressure change were observed in both types. Thus, it was confirmed that Ledinegg instability could occur in the steam generator with corrugated plates. However, it was dependent on the chevron angle, and the optimal chevron angle to minimize instability was 45° under the conditions of the present analysis.

  • Purpose: To analyze the risk factors and the treatment results of the distal chevron osteotomy for the hallux valgus in young adult. Materials and Methods: Eleven cases of hallux valgus in 9 patients who underwent the distal chevron osteotomy between February 2000 and January 2004 were included for the study. For the clinical evaluation, we used hallux-metatarsophalangeal interphalangeal scale of American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS). For radiological evaluation, we measured hallux valgus angle (HVA) and intermetatarsal angle (IMA). Results: Five patients had family history of hallux valgus. Symptoms were aggravated by military drill and sports activity. The average AOFAS scale was 62.5 preoperatively, and 88.4 at final follow-up. The HVA and IMA were $34.9^{\circ}$, and $15.8^{\circ}$ preoperatively, $16.3^{\circ}$ and $8.2^{\circ}$ at postoperative 6 weeks, and $19.9^{\circ}$ and $9.8^{\circ}$ at final follow-up. Conclusion: The symptoms of hallux valgus in young adults were aggravated by military drill and sports activity. Distal chevron osteotomy was useful for the treatment of the moderate to severe hallux valgus in young patients.

  • This research investigates the internal flow and heat transfer in a plate heat exchanger with chevron shape by utilizing the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software. The basic unit of the plate heat exchanger is generally composed of a hot channel, an intermediate chevron plate, and a cold channel. Several studies have reported experimental and numerical simulation of heat transfer and pressure drop. This study focused on the detailed numerical simulation of flow and heat transfer in the complicated chevron shape channel. The long chevron plate was designed to include 16 chevron patterns. For proper mesh resolution, the number of cells was determined after the grid sensitivity test. The working fluid is water, and its properties are defined as a function of temperature. The Reynolds number ranges from 900 to 9,000 in the simulation. A realizable $k-{\varepsilon}$ model and non-equilibrium wall function are properly considered for the turbulent flow. The friction factors and heat transfer coefficient are validated by comparing them with existing empirical correlations, and other patterned flow phenomena are also investigated.

  • Recent progress in both low pretilt and high pretilt defect free C1 surface stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal (SSFLC) devices is reviewed. First, by numerical calculation to investigate the balance between surface azimuthal anchoring energy and bulk elastic energy within the confined chevron layer geometry of C1 and C2, it is possible to achieve a zigzag free C1 state by low azimuthal anchoring alignment with a low pretilt angle. The critical azimuthal anchoring coefficient for defect free C1 state is calculated. Its relationship with elastic constant, chevron angle as well as surface topography effect are also discussed. Second, using $5^{\circ}$ oblique SiO deposition alignment method a defect free, large memory angle, high contrast ratio and bistable C1 SSFLC display, which has potential for electronic paper applications has also been developed. The electrooptical properties and bistability of this device have been investigated. Various aspects of defect control are also discussed.

  • Heat exchanger has been widely used in the industry which needs energy transport, and the application of the plate type heat exchanger having high efficiency has been greatly increased. In this study main design parameters are analyzed and new equations are induced. The induced formulation was compared with a commercial program in order to design an optimal heat exchanger. The equations of heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop for Chevron angles are introduced as functions of Reynolds number. The program implemented the equations is tested with Chevron angle variation. The results show that the convective heat transfer coefficients take errors within 8% and the pressure drops have errors within 5% in the analysis conditions.
