Bulking phenomena and scum formation are common problem in suspended growth system like the activated sludge plants for wastewater treatment. Apart from wastewater composition, operating conditions, such as mechanical stress by insufficient oxygen supply, are often decisive for the occurrence of a bulking or scumming problem. There were the comparative aeration tanks in terms of sludge bulking caused by the difference of mechanical aeration facilities in the wastewater treatment plant of N paper mill company. In this study the cause of bulking was investigated through not only the biological isolation and identification but also a series of operational data consideration. On the basis of the investigation results for bulking cause, the operational criteria on dissolved oxygen concentration was derived to decrease the bulking problem.

This work aims to investigate the oily wastewater treatment by the electrocoagulation-flotation (ECF) and propose a mathematical model for the efficiency prediction. Cutting oil was used to prepare the synthetic oily wastewater with submicron droplet sizes. The chemical coagulation by aluminium sulfate was firstly tested following by the electrocoagulation-flotation with aluminium electrodes. Both processes gave the effective treatment performance with the efficiencies higher than 90%. However, the ECF consumed less aluminium dosage as well as produced less sludge, which were its advantage on the chemical coagulation. The performance of the ECF was found to be affected by the current density, oil concentration, and reaction time according to the analysis by the design of experiment (DOE). Finally, the prediction model was proposed by two approaches, including linear and logarithm function. The latter model gave more accuracy prediction results in terms of treatment efficiency and duration in the lag and stable stages.

A multi-effect air gap membrane distillation (ME-AGMD) module for pesticide wastewater treatment is studied with internal heat recovery, sensible heat of brine recovery, number of stages and the use of fresh feed as cooling water in a single module is implemented in this study. A flat sheet polytetrafluroethylene (PTFE) membrane was used in the 4-stage ME-AGMD module. The maximum value of permeate flux could reach $38.62L/m^2h$ at feed -coolant water temperature difference about $52^{\circ}C$. The performance parameter of the module like, specific energy consumption and gain output ratio (GOR) was investigated for the module with and without heat recovery. Also, the module performance was characterized with respect to the separation efficiency of several important water quality parameters. The removal efficiency of the module was found to be >98.8% irrespective water quality parameters. During the experiment the membrane fouling was caused due to the deposition of the salt/crystal on the membrane surface. The membrane fouling was controlled by membrane module washing cycle 9 h and also by acidification of the feed water (pH=4) using 0.1M HCl solution.
Pulp and paper industry produces large volumes of wastewater and residual sludge waste, resulting in many issues in relation to wastewater treatment and sludge disposal. Contaminants in pulp and paper wastewater include effluent solids, sediments, chemical oxygen demand (COD), and biological oxygen demand (BOD), which should be treated by wastewater treatment processes such as coagulation and biological treatment. However, few works have been attempted to predict the treatment efficiency of pulp and paper wastewater. Accordingly, this study presented empirical models based on experimental data in laboratory-scale coagulation tests and compared them with statistical models such as artificial neural network (ANN). Results showed that the water quality parameters such as turbidity, suspended solids, COD, and UVA can be predicted using either linear or expoential regression models. Nevertheless, the accuracies for turbidity and UVA predictions were relatively lower than those for SS and COD. On the other hand, ANN showed higher accuracies than the emprical models for all water parameters. However, it seems that two kinds of models should be used together to provide more accurate information on the treatment efficiency of pulp and paper wastewater.
The effluent limitations for individual industry based on the best available technology economically achievable (BAT) have been required to achieve effective regulation. BAT assessment criteria that are suitable for the circumstances of Korean industry were developed in the previous study. The criteria were applied to determine the BAT for leather tanning and finishing industry. For the evaluation BAT, a subcategorization for the industry considering wastewater characteristics, source equipments, raw material and so on should be suggested. Three subcategories: A) Unharing, Chrome Tan, Retan-Wet Finish, B) Chrome Tan, Retan-Wet Finish, and C) Furskins were proposed in this study. Wastewater discharged from the each category contains high concentration of COD, chrome, nitrogen and sulfide. In particular, the concentration of nitrogen from the subcategory A is significantly greater. Twenty sites were surveyed and wastewater qualities were analyzed. Therefore, six different technologies were applied to the subcategory A for the end-of-pipe treatment technology, and a technology was used in the subcategory B and C, respectively. The technology candidates were evaluated in terms of environmental impacts, economically achievability, treatment performance and economical reasonability. As the result, the technology options for each subcategories: A) primary chemical precipitation + modified Ludzack-Ettinger process (MLE) + secondary chemical precipitation, B) chemical precipitation + typical activated-sludge process + Fenton oxidation, C) chemical precipitation + typical activated-sludge process + batch Fenton oxidation or batch activated carbon treatment were selected as the BAT, respectively.
Microalgal biofuel production from wastewater has economic and environmental advantages. This article investigates the lipid production from high chemical oxygen demand (COD) bioethanol wastewater without dilution or additional nutrients, using a newly isolated heterotrophic microalga, Chlorella vulgaris LAM-Q. To enhance lipid accumulation, the combined effects of important operational parameters were studied via response surface methodology. The optimal conditions were found to be temperature of $22.8^{\circ}C$, initial pH of 6.7, and inoculum density of $1.2{\times}10^8cells/ml$. Under these conditions, the lipid productivity reached 195.96 mg/l/d, which was markedly higher than previously reported values in similar systems. According to the fatty acid composition, the obtained lipids were suitable feedstock for biodiesel production. Meanwhile, 61.40% of COD, 51.24% of total nitrogen, and 58.76% of total phosphorus were removed from the bioethanol wastewater during microalgal growth. In addition, 19.17% of the energy contained in the wastewater was transferred to the microalgal biomass in the fermentation process. These findings suggest that C. vulgaris LAM-Q can efficiently produce lipids from high-concentration bioethanol wastewater, and simultaneously performs wastewater treatment.
This research aims at applicability of adsorption process in order to satisfy the restricted Effluent Quality Standards for dyeing wastewater. The dyeing wastewater treated by biological process with carrier imbedded microorganisms was directly applied to the activated carbon adsorption in Process A, The dyeing wastewater treated by Fenton oxidation for the effluent of biological process was applied to the adsorption in Process B. It was found that the optimum conditions of adsorption with granular activated carbon are $20^{\circ}C$ and 120 minutes for the batch experiment. Langmuir equation was fitted better than Freundlich equation to the experimental data. The breakthrough time of adsorption column was determined by color rather than $COD_{Mn}$ for both Process A and Process B. The results revealed that the breakthrough time of adsorption for two processes was extended by the treatment of Fenton oxidation for dyeing wastewater treated by biological treatment than the direct application of dyeing wastewater treated by the biological treatment. Adsorption process can be applied in order to meet the restricted Effluent Quality Standards for dyeing wastewater.
The scrubber wastewater should be replaced frequently to maintain efficiency. Most chemical companies consign scrubber wastewater, because there are no wastewater treatment facilities. So scrubber wastewater is not frequently replaced because of high treatment cost. For this reason, the most scrubber exhaust gas exceeds the odor emission limit or has a phenomenon that the odor intensity of exhaust gas becomes higher. Therefore we have developed a scrubber wastewater cleaning system consisting of filtration and adsorption processes. The scrubber wastewater cleaning system was applied two chemical companies. We evaluated the water quality and odor reduction effect before and after system application. As a result, scrubber wastewater quality improved by 50% or more, odor reduction efficiency of scrubber exhaust gas improved by 20% or more. And the total operating costs of the scrubber could be reduced by 40% or more.

The main purpose of this work is to investigate the performance of membranes for treatment of dyeing wastewater. The microfiltration (MF) membranes (titania-blended polysulfone & alumina) were prepared. The nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) membranes were kindly supplied by the Sae-Han. In order to reuse the wastewater for dyeing, the effluents were treated by the high flux RO and the fouling resistant RO (FRM) membranes. Also, the NF membrane was used for water reuse in rinsing.
This study aimed at determining the treatability of high-strength wastewater (chemical oxygen demand, COD>4000 mg/L) using combined anaerobic-aerobic granular sludge in lagoon systems. The lagoon systems were simulated in laboratory-scale aerated and non-aerated batch processes inoculated with dried granular microorganisms at a dose of 0.4 g/L. In the anaerobic batch, a removal efficiency of 25% was not attained until the 12th day. It took 14 days of aerobic operation to achieve sCOD removal efficiency of 94% at COD:N:P of 100:4:1. The best removal efficiency of sCOD (96%) was achieved in the sequential anaerobic-aerobic batch of 12 days and 2 days, respectively at COD:N:P ratio of 200:4:1. Sequential anaerobic-aerobic treatment can achieve efficient and cost effective treatment for high-strength wastewater in lagoon systems.
