The populations of Polyphagostarsonemus latus (Acari: Tarsonemidae) peaked two times on green perilla grown in greenhouses of Geumsan-Gun, Chungchungnamdo. The first peak of P. latus was in the middle of June, after it was first detected in late May. The population of P. latus peaked for the second time in mid July as its density stared rapidly increasing in early July. The application of chemical pesticides and eco-friendly agricultural materials, the two management methods used to control P. latus on green perilla, did not alter the occurrence patterns of P. latus; population size of the mite was much larger in greenhouses using chemical pesticides than in the ones using eco-friendly agricultural materials. This difference might be cuased by continuity of the management methods. Chemical control of P. latus should be limited owing to pesticide residue. The highest density of P. latus on green perilla plants was observed after 25 days after inoculation. The density was the highest in mid-aged leaves (e.g., the largest leaves) and the lowest in newly developed leaves (e.g., smallest leaves). However, there was no significant (P > 0.05) correlation between leaf size and density of P. latus. These results indicate that leaf size (e.g., leaf age) did not affect the occurrence of P. latus. Thus, any leaf of a green perilla plant is available as a sample unit for P. latus.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of dietary Panax ginseng Leaves, (PGL), Dioscorea japonica Hulls(DJH) and Oriental Medicine Refuse(OMR) on meat quality and physico-chemical properties in meat sample of Korean Native Chicken(KNC). KNC were randomly assigned to one of the 4 dietary treatment : 1) control(commercial feed), 2) PGL(commercial feed supplemented with 5% Panax ginseng leaves) 3) DJH(commercial feed with 5% Dioscorea japonica hulls) 4) OMR (commercial feed with 5% oriental medicine refuse). They were feed one of the experimental diets for 12 weeks and slaughtered. 160 KNC raised for 20 weeks. In the proximate composition, moisture, crude protein and crude ash was no significantly difference. But fat content were tended to high in control. The heating loss of control, PGL, DJH and OMR were 28.44%, 30.44%, 28.83% and 25.71% and control, PGL, and DJH were higher compared with that of OMR. The WHC(whiter holding capacity) was contrary to heating loss. The shear value and pH did not show any difference among the treatment groups. There were no significantly different in meat color(L*, a*, b*) between control and treatment groups (L*=63.20∼70.67, a*=2.20∼4.15, b*=2.70∼6.01). In sensory evaluation, juiciness, tenderness and flavor were not detected to panelist. Among fatty acid, oleic acid of DJH and OMR were higher than that of control and PGL(p<0.05). Also, saturated fatty acid/unsaturated fatty acid of control, PGL, DJH and OMR were 1.58, 1.58, 1.64 and 1.67, respectively. DJH and OMR groups was higher than control and PGL groups(p<0.05). Total amino acid contents was control>OMR>DJH>PGL. Major amino acid of KNC was comprised to glutamic acid, lysine, aspartic acid, leucine and arginine.
This experiment was conducted to select and rear the adaptable cultivar which isused for various purpose and to build a year-round cultivation using with characters of aerial part and analysis of chemical components in 28 local cultivar of Artemisia princeps Var. The growth of aerial part, which are stem length, stem diameter, no. of branch, node, leaf size and leaf pubescence, in north local cultivars was more vigorous than those of south local caltivars. Fresh weight of "Myeongcheonssuk " was highest in local caltivars, and in view of local area, local cultivars which was collected from Iri Si and Euiseong Gun was shown the highest fresh weight. Local cultivars as mentioned above had a characters with plenty of leaves, nodes and pubescence of leaf is long. In chemical components of leaves in morth cultivar, content of N, MgO, Zn, Cu, Mn was high, while $P_2O_5,\;K_2O$ in middle local cultivars, Fe in south local cultivars. The more content of carbohydrate in leaves was high, the content of $K_{2}O$ had a increasing tendency. In local cultivars which was collected form Iri Si and Euiseong Gun with the highest fresh weight, content of $N,\;P_{2}O_5,\;K_{2}O$ was high, on the other hand content of MgO, Zn, Ca, Mn, Fe, was low in leaves of Artemisia Princeps Var.

North American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius L.) was analysed for total ginsenosides and ten major ginsenosides (R$_{0}$ , Rb$_1$, Rb$_2$, Rc, Rd, Re, Rf, Rg$_1$, pseudoginsenoside F$_{11}$ and gypenoside XVII), and variations in ginsenoside content with age of plant (over a four-year-period) and geographic location (Ontario versus British Columbia) were investigated. In the roots the total ginsenoside content increased with age up to 58-100 mgㆍg$^{-1}$ dry weights in the fourth year, but in leaves it remained constant over time. Roots and leaves, moreover, had different proportions of individual ginsenosides. The most abundant ginsenosides were Rb$_1$ (56mgㆍg$^{-1}$ for Ontario; 37mgㆍg$^{-1}$ for British Columbia) and Re (21mgㆍg$^{-1}$ for Ontario; 15 mgㆍg$^{-1}$ for British Columbia) in roots, and Rd (28-38 mgㆍg$^{-1}$ ), Re (20-25 mgㆍg$^{-1}$ ), and Rb$_2$ (13-19 mgㆍg$^{-1}$ ) in leaves. Measurable quantities of Rf were found in leaves (0.4-1.8 mgㆍg$^{-1}$ ) but not in roots or stems. Our results show that ginsenoside profiles in general, and Rf in particular, could be used for chemical fingerprinting to distinguish the different parts of the ginseng plant, and that ginseng leaves could be valuable sources of the ginsenosides Rd, Re, and Rb$_2$.
Hand leaf thinning for improvement of fruit coloration and quality is one of the most labor-consuming works in Korean apple cultivation. The study was aimed at investigating whether foliar application of two chelate compounds (Cu-EDTA, Fe-EDTA) could defoliate effectively 'Hongro'/M.9 apple leaves and enhance fruit coloration and quality. At 30 days before harvest, foliar spray with two chelate compounds defoliated significantly the apple leaves. Chelate treatments did not affect the leaf chlorophyll content. High concentration of chelates decreased drastically photosynthetic rate of true leaves, and then it stayed in low levels, whereas low levels of chelates reduced sharply the photosynthetic rate but it was gradually restored over time. Cu-EDTA regardless of its concentration triggered higher defoliation compared to Fe-EDTA. Consequently, higher defoliation improved light interception of fruits and accumulated more anthocyanin. Particularly, Cu-EDTA could target mainly fruit cluster leaves which affect directly light interception of the fruits, i.e. more selective defoliants compared to Fe-EDTA. However, 3% Cu-EDTA rather defoliated excessively, accompanying with reduction of fruit weight and soluble solids. Therefore, our results suggest that 1% Cu-EDTA which defoliates properly the fruit cluster leaves could improve coloration and quality of 'Hongro'/M.9 apple fruits.
This study was conducted to investigate the influence of air temperature and relative humidity on excessive drying rate of burley tobacco. In experiment I, 4 temperatures and I humidity by day and air curing by night were treated from initial curing stage. In experiment II, 15 combinations of 3 temperatures and 5 humidities were applied from the yellow stage of cure. Yellowish cured leaves resulted from overdrying at high temperature and especially, at low humidity. How- ever, these were not produced at 75-80% RH and under 35$^{\circ}C$ by day with air curing b y night. The proper range of temperature and humidity for desirable color of cured leaf were the combinations of 30$^{\circ}C$, 75-80% RH or 35$^{\circ}C$, 80-85% RH. As excessive drying leaves increased, physical properties of cured leaves were poorer and chemical contents were less decomposed.

The objective of this study was to identify the content of phenolic and volatile organic compounds in edible and non-edible parts of 'Seolhyang' strawberry plants. We performed a comparative chemical analysis of the compounds found in roots, leaves, petioles, runners, and unripe and ripe fruits during vegetative propagation and reproductive growth. The contents of ellagic and gallic acids in the leaves of runner plants during vegetative propagation were $7.36{\pm}1.10$ and $5.07{\pm}3.66mg{\cdot}g^{-1}$ FW, respectively, and were higher than those in the other parts. The main volatile organic compound was identified as 3-hexen-1-ol, and it was mostly detected in leaves. The content of ellagic acid in leaves during reproductive growth was $12.96{\pm}2.30mg{\cdot}g^{-1}$ FW, while that in the other parts was below $6.00mg{\cdot}g^{-1}$ FW. The content of gallic acid in unripe fruits was $2.75{\pm}0.48mg{\cdot}g^{-1}$ FW and was higher than that in the other parts. Ripe fruits contained the lowest contents of ellagic and gallic acids but contained the most diverse volatile organic compounds, including sesquiterpenes, among the tested plant parts. The results indicate that non-edible parts (e.g., leaves and unripe fruits) of strawberry plants can be used as a raw material for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agents, and edible parts (i.e., ripe fruits) can be available for making an essential oil.
The present studies were carried out to obtain some basic informations of the breeding of tobacco varieties. Genetically divergent 8 varieties, 3 flue-cured, 2 burley and 3 sun-cured tobaccos, were used in half diallel cross. In order to analyze the heterosis, combining abilities, modes of inheritance and correlations for some agronomic and chemical characters, 8 parents and 28 $F_1$ were tested. The results obtained were summarized as follows: The percentages of heterosis for stem diameter, internode length and total sugar content in $F_1$ hybrid were 3.6%, 3.1% and 10.6%, whereas these for days to flower, total alkaloids and leaves per plant were -6.3%, -6.9% and -5.0%, respectively. Yield had significant positive genotypic correlations with plant height, days to flower and leaf length, but negative with internode length and total sugar content. It also had significant prositive phenotypic correlations with plant height, days to flower, leaves per plant, leaf length, leaf width and leaf shape index (Leaf length/leaf width). General (GCA) and specific combining abilities (SCA) for all characters of $F_1$ hybrid were significant. The effects of GCA were positive on yield, plant height, stem diameter, leaves per plant and days to flower of Burley 21. And those were positive on yield, leaf shape index and plant height, but negative on leaves per plant and total nitrogen of Hicks. The effects of SCA for yield and leaves per plant were greater than those of others on the combinations of Coker 139 and Burley type, respectively.
