Analytical chemists frequently use filter papers during the course of experiments without any hesitation. However, the results of analysis could be deteriorated by the various ions which are extracted from filter papers. In some filter paper made for qualitative use, about $300{\mu}g$ sodium and many other cations were detected. Although the quantities of contaminants was low in the filter paper made for quantitative use, significant amount of Fe, Si, Al, Cu and Zn was detected as well as alkali element. Many cations and anions were also detected in the filtrate obtained from the glass fiber filter.
In this study, we consider a multi-input multi-output styrene polymerization reactor system for which the monomer conversion and the weight average molecular weight are controlled by manipulating the jacket inlet temperature and the feed flow rate. The reactor system is identified by using a linear subspace identification method and then the output feedback model predictive controller is constructed on the basis of the identified model. Here we use the Best Linear Unbiased Estimation (BLUE) filter as a stochastic estimator instead of the Kalman filter. The BLUE filter observes the state successfully without any a priori information of initial states. In contrast to the Kalman filter, the BLUE filter eliminates the offset by observing the state of the augmented system regardless of a priori information of the initial state for an integral white noise augmented system. A BLUE filter has a finite impulse response (FIR) structure which utilizes finite measurements and inputs on the most recent time interval [i-N, i] in order to avoid long processing times.
The quantitative trace analysis of ions could be deteriorated by filter papers because of the effect of adsorption. Generally the adsorption of anions on filter paper did not occurred. Instead, $Cl^-$ and $NO{_3}^-$ ions were extracted from the filter papers. However, most metal ions were adsorbed on the filter papers by the formation of hydroxide in neutral solution. The adsorption of metal ions except $Ag^+$ ion could be avoided depend on the acid concentrations.
A new spin filter consisting of $50{\mu}m$ (nominal pore size) depth fitters rolled on a stainless steel grid was developed, using Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a model suspension cell to evaluate the spin filter performance. In a 1.8-1 fermentor with a rotation speed of 300 rpm and perfusion rate of 4 ml/min, a cell concentration of 49 g/l and ethanol concentration of 45 g/l from 100 g/l glucose could be obtained in a perfusion culture. The major mechanisms for cell separation used by the large-pore spin filter appeared to be centrifugal force and pivotal movement of the cells in the spin filter.
The effect of Pt addition over $V_2O_5-WO_3/TiO_2$ catalyst supported on PRO-66 was investigated for NO reduction in order to develop the catalytic filter working at low temperature. Catalytic filters, $Pt-V_2O_5-WO_3/TiO_2/PRD$, were prepared by co-impregnation of Pt, V, and W precursors on $TiO_2$-coated ceramic filter named PRD (PRD-66). Titania was coated onto the pore surface of the ceramic filter using a vacuum aided-dip coating method. The Pt-loaded catalytic filter shifted the optimum working temperature from $260-320^{\circ}C$(for the catalytic filter without Pt addition) to $190-240^{\circ}C$, reducing 700 ppm NO to achieve the $N_x$ slip concentration($N_x\;=\;NO+N_2O+NO_2+NH_3$) less than 20 ppm at the face velocity of 2 cm/s. $Pt-V_2O_5-WO_3/TiO_2$ supported on PRD showed the similar catalytic activity for NO reduction with that supported on SiC filter as reported in a previous study, which implies the ceramic filter itself has no considerable interaction for the catalytic activity.
Filter media finely interspersed with activated carbons were prepared by a needle punching process without using chemical binders. Their characteristics were investigated efficiently to abate environmentally harmful gas such as acetaldehyde, and were compared with those of cabin air filter coated with activated carbons by using chemical binders. These combination filters were installed on a vehicle fan placed in a test chamber of capacity similar to the interior volume of a commercially available passenger car, and the efficiency of acetaldehyde abatement was measured as a function of time. The filter utilizing chemical binders showed somewhat better performance for the elimination of acetaldehyde despite the adverse effect of the chemical binder that would clog the micropores of the activated carbons. It turned out that the needle punching process had the activated carbons agglomerated due to hydrophobic interactions, resulting in a relatively larger void area than that of the filter utilizing chemical binders.

The demand of micro electrical mechanical system (MEMS) bio/chemical sensor is rapidly increasing. To prevent the contamination of sensing area, a filtration system is required in on-chip total analyzing MEMS bio/chemical sensor. A nano-filter was mainly applied in some application detecting submicron feature size bio/chemical products such as bacteria, fungi and so on. We suggested a simple nano-filter fabrication process based on replication process. The mother pattern was fabricated by holographic lithography and reactive ion etching process, and the replication process was carried out using polymer mold and UV-imprinting process. Finally the nano-filter is obtained after removing the replicated part of metal deposited replica. In this study, as a practical example of the suggested process, a nano-dot array was replicated to fabricate nano-filter fur bacteria sensor application.
During the chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) process, slurry that comprises abrasive particles can directly affect the CMP performance and quality. Mainly, the large particles in the slurry can generate the defects on the wafer. Thus, many kinds of filters have been used in the CMP process to remove unwanted over-sized particles. Among these filters, the point-of-use (POU) filter is used just before the slurry is supplied onto the CMP pad. In the CMP research field, analysis of the POU filter has been relatively exceptional, and previous studies have not focused on the standardized filtration efficiency (FE) or filter performance. Furthermore, conventional evaluation methods of filter performance are not appropriate for POU filters, as the POU filter is not a membrane type, but is instead a depth type roll filter. In order to accurately evaluate the POU filter, slurry FE according to particle size was measured in this study. Additionally, a CMP experiment was conducted with filtered slurry to demonstrate the effects of filtered slurry on CMP performance. Depending on the flow rate and the filter retention size, the FE according to particle size was different. When the small and large particles have different FEs, the total filtration efficiency (TFE) can still have a similar value. For this reason, there is a need to measure the FE with respect to the particle size to verify the effects of the POU filter on the CMP process.

The purpose of this work is to manufacture of high efficiency water-treatment filter that is equal to imported products or even higher in terms of quality and even develop the manufacturing process. The filtration efficiency of the developed filter was 93~99%, which was better or similar to that of domestic filter (82~97.5%) and Japanese filter (92.5~98%). The pressure loss(durability) along with the amount of contaminant particles was significantly smaller than that of domestic products, and showed $0.1kg_f/cm^2$ less than that of Japanese products. In addition, at the cost side of production, the developed cartridge filter can be produced with 50% of the current price compared to that of Japanese products. Therefore, it is possible to replace the imported Japanese products as well as domestic products.

Natural organic matter (NOM) removal by physico-chemical adsorption and biological oxidation was investigated in five slow sand filters with different media depths. Non-purgeable dissolved organic carbon(NPDOC) and $UV_{254}$ absorbance were measured to evaluate the characteristics of NOM removal at different filter depths. Removal efficiency of NOM was in the range of 10-40% throughout the operation time. At start-up of the filters packed with clean sand media, NOM was probably removed by physico-chemical adsorption on the surface of sand through the overall layer of filter bed. However, when Schumutzdecke layer was built up after 30 days operation, the major portion of NPDOC was removed by biological oxidation and/or bio-sorption in lower depth above 50 mm. NOM removal rate in the upper 50 mm filter bed was $0.82hr^{-1}$. It was about 20 times of the rate($0.04hr^{-1}$) in the deeper filter bed. Small portion of NPDOC could be removed in the deeper filter bed by both bio-sorption and biodegradation. SEM analysis and VSS measurement clearly showed the growth of biofilm in the deeper filter bed below 500 mm, which possibly played an important role in the NOM removal by biological activity besides the physco-chemical adsorption mechanism
