Physical and Chemical Weathering Indices for Biotite Granite and Granitic Weathered Soil in Gyeongju

  • Physical weathering caused by external forces and chemical weathering caused by the decomposition or alteration of constituent materials are the two factors that dominate the mechanical properties of rocks. In this study, a field investigation was undertaken to identify the physical and chemical weathering characteristics of the biotite granite and granitic weathered soils in Gyeongju, South Korea. Samples were collected according to their grade of weathering and subjected to modal analysis, XRD analysis, XRF analysis, physical property tests, particle size distribution tests, and slake durability tests. Modal and XRD analysis identified these rocks as biotite granite; secondary alteration minerals were not observed. Physical property tests and particle size distribution analyses indicate an average porosity of 41.28% and a sand content of > 90 wt.%. These values are somewhat higher than those of granites in general. The results of the slake durability test and XRF analyses show that the physical and chemical weathering indices of the samples vary with the degree of weathering.

Relationship Between Fractal Dimension and Morphological Features of Cephalosporium acremonium M25 in a 30-1 Bioreactor Culture

  • In a 30-1 bioreactor culture, whole differentiation occurred from 48 h, and then proceeded rapidly. As swollen hyphal fragments and arthrospores increased, cephalosporin C (CPC) production increased exponentially to $1.85\;g/1^{-1}$ at 72 h. To explain the morphological changes of Cephalosporium acremonium M25 more quantitatively, specific differentiation rates and fractal analysis were employed. Specific differentiation rates of morphological factors varied greatly during the period of culture time from 48 h to 72 h, when CPC production increased significantly. Changes of fractal dimensions showed a pattern similar to that of the specific rate of arthrospores. Furthermore, it was inversely related to the specific rate of tips. Overall, it was suggested that the fractal dimension had potential for a new morphological parameter of fungal morphology, showing complex differentiation patterns.

Optimization and Scale-Up of Succinic Acid Production by Mannheimia succiniciproducens LPK7

  • The effects of culture conditions on succinic acid production and its possible scale-up have been studied. Mannheimia succiniciproducens LPK7, engineered for enhanced production of succinic acid and reduced by-product secretion, was used for the experiments. Mannheimia succiniciproducens LPK7 is a knock-out strain of wild type deficient in the ldhA, pflB, and pta-ackA genes, and is derived from Mannheimia succiniciproducens MBEL55E. Process optimization of factors including optimal temperature, pH, carbon source, and nitrogen source was performed to enhance the production of succinic acid in flasks. To observe scale-up effects, batch fermentation was carried out at various working volumes. At a working volume of 7.0 l, the final succinic acid concentration and yield were 15.4g/l and 0.86g/g. This result shows similar amount of succinic acid obtained in lab-scale fermentation, and it is possible to scale up to larger fermentors without major problems.

Desulfurization of Model Oil via Adsorption by Copper(II) Modified Bentonite

  • In order to further reduce the sulfur content in liquid hydrocarbon fuels, a desulfurization process by adsorption for removing dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and propylmercaptan (PM) was investigated. Bentonite adsorbents modified by $CuCl_2$ for the desulfurization of model oil was investigated. The results indicated that the modified bentonite adsorbents were effective for adsorption of DMS and PM. The bentonite adsorbents were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermal analysis (TGA). The acidity was measured by FT-IR spectroscopy. Several factors that influence the desulfurization capability, including loading and calcination temperature, were studied. The maximum sulfur adsorption capacity was obtained at a Cu(II) loading of 15 wt %, and the optimum calcination temperature was $150^{\circ}C$. Spectral shifts of the ${\nu}$(C-S) and ${\nu}$(Cu-S) vibrations of the complex compound obtained by the reaction of $CuCl_2$ and DMS were measured with the Raman spectrum. On the basis of complex adsorption reaction and hybrid orbital theory, the adsorption on modified bentonite occurred via multilayer intermolecular forces and S-M (${\sigma}$) bonds.

화학 관련 산업의 중대 재해 원인분석을 통한 안전관리 중요성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Importance of Safety Measurement Based on the Analysis of the Factors Leading to Serious Accidents Related to Chemical Industries)

  • 화학 관련 산업에서의 중대재해 발생 사고를 업종별로 분류하여 방호시설, 설비결함, 기인물 및 불안전 행동 그리고 고용형태 등에 대한 영향을 살펴보고자 하였다. 이에 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 첫째 화학 관련 업종 중에서 화학물 및 화학제품 제조업이 중대재해자 수가 가장 많은 것을 알 수 있었고, 그 중에서도 특정방호시설에 집중되고 있는 것을 파악하였다. 둘째 고용형태에 따른 중대재해는 주로 임시직 및 일용직이 아닌 상용직 경력자들에서 일어나는 것을 알 수 있었으며 피해 형태는 주로 대형사고로 인한 4명이상 사망자가 발생하는 피해가 발생하는 것으로 파악되었다.

  • Al-SBA-1(Si/Al = 40, 80 and 120) and Al,Mg-SBA-1 (Si/(Al+Mg) = 40 and 80) molecular sieves were synthesized and characterized. Acetalization of n-heptanal with methanol was studied under autogenous pressure between 80 and $150^{\circ}C$. Since protonation of n-heptanal was fast, addition of methanol to the same to formed hemiacetal slowly whereas conversion of hemiacetal to acetal was fast. The catalysts exhibited nearly similar conversion irrespective of their difference in acidity, and all of them showed more than 80 % conversion either at 80 or $100^{\circ}C$. Hence it is evident that the difference in acidity is not so important in differentiating the activity of the catalysts. The large pore size and hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties are suggested to be the main factors that control acetalization.

화학 응집제 투입에 따른 수질항목별 하수처리 반응곡선 (Saturation curves for chemical coagulation of wastewater treatment)

  • Recently the Government has announced updated water quality standards for wastewater treatment effluent (become effective in 2012). That includes highly enforced regulations for T-P, BOD and COD, and a large budget, in particular for phosphorus removal, was set by the Ministry of environment. Chemical coagulation destabilizes colloidal particles so that particles grow to larger flocs, and solid particles are removed by solid-liquid separation. The efficiency of chemical coagulation depends on a various factors, including coagulant types and costs, construction and operation costs for the treatment facilities and so on. The proper selection should be based on the treatment efficiency of coagulants and underlying costs. The current research was to evaluate the treatment efficiencies of coagulants on a variety of wastewater influents and to develop saturation curves for several water quality parameters. Typical $Al_2(SO_4)_3$ and $FeCl_3$ were tested under a range of coagulant concentrations. The pollutant removal efficiencies of chemical treatment both for the $Al_2(SO_4)_3$ and $FeCl_3$ were especially high for T-P, followed by SS, BOD and COD. Correlation test also proved the highest relationship between SS and T-P.

고분자 첨가에 의한 탄산칼슘의 상 변화 (Phase Change of Calcium Carbonate by Adding Polymers)

  • 침전탄산칼슘 결정화계에서 첨가제인 ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid(EDTA), diethylene triaminepentaacetic acid(DTPA), citric acid(CIT), pyromellitic amid(PMA) 첨가에 의한 탄산칼슘 결정의 형상 변화를 연구하였다. 첨가제를 넣지 않았을 때 낮은 온도 $20^{\circ}C$에서는 calcite 결정이 생성되었고, 높은 온도 $80^{\circ}C$에서는 aragonite 결정이 생성되었으며 EDTA와 DTPA 첨가에 의한 40, $60^{\circ}C$ 중간온도에서는 aragonite 결정이 생성됨을 알 수 있었다. CIT와 PMA 첨가에 의해 aragonite의 성장이 지연되었으며 calcite 단일상이 나타났다. 첨가제가 단일상의 탄산칼슘을 만드는데 중요한 요소임이 발견되었다.

Factors Affecting in Vitro Activity of LB20304, a New Flu-oroquinolone

  • LB20304 is a novel fluoroquinolone that exhibits a potent broad spectrum antibacterial activity against both gram-positve and gram-negative bacteria. The MICs (Minimal Inhibitory Concentration) of LB20304 were determined against both gram-positve and gram-negative bacteria under various conditions including several media, pHs, and inoculum concentrations. The in vitro activity of LB20304 was not significantly affected by the changes in testing conditions such as components of media and inoculum concentrations, but it was slightly reduced by acid condition. The MICs and MBCs (Minimal Bactericidal Concentration) of LB20304 against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were hardly affected by the presence of 50 % human serum, mouse serum, guinea pig serum or horse serum, and the MBCs were equal to or at most four-times higher than the MiCs. The activities of LB20304 were decreased by the presence of high concentraion of $Mg^{++}$ or human urine (pH, 5.5) in the test media. The frequencies of mutants resistant to LB20304 were similar to or lower than those found in ciprofloxacin and sparfloxacin.

N, N-dimethylformamide 취급근로자의 유해위험 정보 인식도 조사 (A study on chemical hazard communication for workers exposed to N, N-dimethylformamide)

  • Object: we investigated some factors which can affect workers' comprehension of chemical hazard information and their actions to protect themselves from the hazard. Method: Comprehension score of chemical hazard information and the rate of wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) was surveyed for the 109 workers from 15 factories who were exposed to N, N-dimethylformamide. Difference of the worker's comprehension score of hazard information was analyzed by education interval, work duration and the way of occupational safety and health management between self-managed or sub-contracted. Result: Mean comprehension score of N, N-dimethylformamide hazard, which was given as a short quiz composed of 10 "true" or "false" problems, was 65%. Mean percentage of wearing PPE was improved as the education program was done within a month but decreased after 6 months. Eighty seven % of workers got the chemical hazard information from the material safety data sheet placed at workplace. Conclusion: Education interval and comprehension score affected the rate of wearing PPE. The way of occupational safety and health management self-managed or sub-contracted did not affect the workers' comprehension score on hazard information nor the rate of wearing PPE.
