Tomato grey mould has been one of the destructive fungal diseases during tomato production. Ten mM of menadione sodium bisulfite (MSB) was applied to tomato plants for eco-friendly control of the grey mould. MSB-reduced tomato grey mould in the 3rd true leaves was prolonged at least 7 days prior to the fungal inoculation of two inoculum densities (2 × 104 and 2 × 105 conidia/ml) of Botrytis cinerea. Protection efficacy was significantly higher in the leaves inoculated with the lower disease pressure of conidial suspension compared to the higher one. MSB-pretreatment was not effective to arrest oxalic acid-triggered necrosis on tomato leaves. Plant cell death and hydrogen peroxide accumulation were restricted in necrotic lesions of the B. cinereainoculated leaves by the MSB-pretreatment. Decreased conidia number and germ-tube elongation of B. cinerea were found at 10 h, and mycelial growth was also impeded at 24 h on the MSB-pretreated leaves. MSB-mediated disease suppressions were found in cotyledons and different positions (1st to 5th) of true leaves inoculated with the lower conidial suspension, but only 1st to 3rd true leaves showed decreases in lesion sizes by the higher inoculum density. Increasing MSB-pretreatment times more efficiently decreased the lesion size by the higher disease pressure. MSB led to inducible expressions of defence-related genes SlPR1a, SlPR1b, SlPIN2, SlACO1, SlChi3, and SlChi9 in tomato leaves prior to B. cinerea infection. These results suggest that MSB pretreatment can be a promising alternative to chemical fungicides for environment-friendly management of tomato grey mould.
Consumers' interest and government's support for the fruits rapidly increased organic fruit productions. This study was examined to compare the soil physicochemical and microbial properties of orchards soil in conventionally and organically management systems. Organic cultivation had lower soil bulk density, solid phase, and penetration resistance than the conventional cultivation. Soil pH and organic matter contents increased from March to August, and the values were greater in the organic cultivation than the conventional cultivation. Total nitrogen (N) and phosphorous concentrations decreased from March to August, and the organic soils had greater N but lower phosphorous concentrations than the conventional soils. Soil microbial carbon biomass increased 36% and 15% for organic and conventional cultivations, respectively, from March to August. Soil microbial N biomass was greater in June than March or August, and the organic cultivation had a greater biomass N compared to the conventional cultivation. Soil dehydrogenase and chitinase activities were greater in June than in March or August. ${\beta}$-glucosidase activity declined in both cultivations, while the phosphatase activity increased. Organic cultivation had greater enzyme activities in March, June, and August, except for the acid phosphatase activity in June.
We surveyed physico-chemical properties of bottom water and sediment to evaluate the influence of sediment on the eutrophication in the downstream of Nagdong River from 1998 to 2000. From May to August, DO concentration of bottom waters dropped below 5 mg $O_2/l$ and $NH_4\;^+$ and $PO_4\;^{3-}$ concentrations significantly increased in the bottom waters, resulting in the great differences between surface and bottom waters. Fluxes across water-sediment interface would be substantially active in this period. The serial orders of the water fertility or eutrophication were Joman River > Sonagdong River > Nagdong River. The organic nutrient contents of sediment increased toward the lower parts of the river system. Organic contents of the sediment would be under the influence of water pollution and exhibited a negative correlation with sediment bulk-density or particle size. The concentrations of exchangeable inorganic nutrients of sediment were greater than those of pore waters, and $PO_4\;^{3-}$, $NH_4\;^+$ and $SiO_2$ increased along the sediment depth. $PO_4\;^{3-}$ and $NO_3\;^-$ concentrations of the pore water were less than the overlying waters, while NH4+ and $SiO_2$ concentrations showed opposite trends. Exchangeable nutrients of sediment could be the repository for t]me nutrient exchange in the water-sediment interface.
The aim of this study was to describe the NO$_3$ leaching in grassland ecosy-stems. Field study was performed in the southwestern district of Germany from 1991 to 1993. The study included 3 different slurry application, conventional slurry application, 50% reduced slurry application and without slurry application. On each plot were installed 3 ceramic cups at 120cm depth. Samples were collected twice a month and analysed for NO$_3$ colorimetrically using a Tecator Auto-Analyzer. Percolation was calculated as the difference between precipitation and potential evapotranspiration. The NO$_3$ concentration in soil water was remarkably variable during the year. The average NO$_3$ concentration during the experiment was the lowest (8.5mg/l) without slurry application and the highest with 240kg N/ha cattle slurry (25.3mg/l). the NO$_3$-N leached per year were respectively 29, 23, and 12kg/ha in case of 240, 120 and 0kg N/ha when cattle slurry was applied. The conventional feeding density of cattle husbandry in the district caused the NO$_3$ contamination in ground water. When the amount of cattle slurry applied was reduced to 50%, the NO$_3$ loading in ground water was reduced greatly. Therefore, the reduction policy of cattle slurry can positively contribute to the prevention of the NO$_3$-contamination in groundwater.
The present study aims to examine the effect of turbid water on fishes in streams which branch into a turbid water area (Yeongyang-gun) and a non-turbid water area (Cheongsong-gun), and finally flow into the Imha reservoir. In a comparison of water quality, the chemical status of the water showed higher pH, DO and SS in the turbid water area than in the non-turbid water area. Also, high density of clay minerals such as vermiculite (V) and illite (I), which is from clay mineral leakage during rainfall, was detected in turbid water, resulting in an increase of turbidity. Fishes inhabiting the turbid water showed irregular spaces in gill lamella, cell separation, edema, and clubbing in epithelial tissues. Also, the gill surface showed roughness and plenty of muddy debris substances inside the gills. The Bowman's space was expanded because of contraction of the glomerulus in the Bowman's space of the kidney tissues. Antioxidant enzymes such as SOD, CAT, GPX, and GST showed higher activities in the specific tissues, muscles and kidney, of fishes living in turbid water than in the non-turbid area. We suggested that; first, the antioxidant activities were increased due to removal of harmful radicals generated in fish bodies in the turbid water area, second, long-time exposure of these histological changes in the tissues might have induced secondary lesion accompanying the inaccurate physiological constancy of fishes.
The occurrence of Oriental Tobacco Budworm (OTB), Helicoverpa assulta (Guenee), larvae in early and late planted tobacco fields showed tow or three distinct peaks. The parasitoid, Campoletis chlorideae Uchida, occurred for a short period with one peak following th second peak of OTB in early planted fields. However, in late planted fields, the parasitoid occurred as long as the OTB larvae were abundant. The OTB larval density was higher in late planted fields than in early planted fields. Among four varieties of tobacco, the OBT larval occurrence was relatively high on NC-744 throughout the season. However, more parasitoid cocoons were found in Burleyf-21 and NC-82. The seasonal occurrence of the larval parasitoid, C. chlorideae, assessed by an OTB larval release and recovery method, continued from late June to early September and relatively higher abundance was noticed from early July to late August. In a field cage evaluation of C. chlorideae as a biological control agent of OTB larvae, higher rate of C. chlorideae release (4 females/2$\m^2$) resulted in higher larval parasitism (86.1%) and less leaf damage (8.7%) in tobacco. The leaf damage by OTB larvae was significantly high in the untreatment plot (23.2%) and the lowest damage (1.6%) was recorded in the chemical treatment plot.
This survey was carried out to collect the basic informations for the improvement of cultivation in job's tears (Coix lachryma-jobi L.) by investigating the general facts, farming practices, growth characteristics, grain yield, and chemical properties of soil in Yonchon-gun farms. The age of farmers were over 51 and the cultivated area was small. Most farmers were self-laboring and produced seeds on their land. Sowing method was usually drilling by hand, 64% of farms had the density of 2000-3500 plant per 10 a, amount of fertilizer application was diverse and the number of pest control was a few. The averages of plant height, number of main culm node, culm diameter, tiller number of plant, thousand grain weight, and grain yield were 184 cm, 10, 10 mm, 14, 108 g, and 341 kg/10a, respectively. The averages of pH, organic matter, $P_2O_5$, K, and EC of soil after harvest were 5.8, 1.1 g/kg, 385 mg/kg, 0.48 cmol+/kg, and 0.21 dS/m, respectively. Grain yield and hardness were negatively correlated -0.7442 at the level of P=0.01.

The glycoprotein known as glomalin-related soil protein (GRSP) is abundantly produced on the hyphae and spores of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in soil and roots. GRSP play a decisive role in the soil aggregation, but GRSP was also sensitive to agricultural managements. Thus, our objectives were to assess the effect of different cover crop incorporation on the GRSP content in soil and growth of subsequent soybean and maize. Pot experiments with the incorporation of four cover crops were set up. The same amount (666g) of aboveground plant parts of wheat (AMF host), hairy vetch (AMF host), mustard (non-host) and rapeseed (non-host) was separately incorporated into soils. The aboveground plant parts and roots of soybean and maize were grown in each incorporated pots and sampled at 6 and 9 weeks after sowing. Our results showed that the different cover crops incorporation affected soil biological and chemical properties such as EC, $NO_3-N$ content, ${\beta}-glucosidase$ activity, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity and GRSP content. The soil EC and $NO_3-N$ content in the hairy vetch, mustard and rapeseed was higher compared to the wheat. The ${\beta}-glucosidase$ activity in the wheat and hairy vetch was significantly higher than that in the mustard and rapeseed, and the ALP activity in the wheat was significantly higher than that in the hairy vetch, mustard, and rapeseed. The GRSP content in the mustard and rapeseed was significantly lower than that of the hairy vetch and wheat. Moreover, The top dry weight and leaf area of soybean and maize in the hairy vetch at 6 weeks were significantly higher compared to the other treatments. Our results indicated that the incorporation of mustard and rapeseed may cause indirectly the decrease of GRSP content and soil enzyme activity in soil. One possible explanation for the decrease of GRSP in non-AMF host crop treatments may be the decrease of AMF density in the soil. AMF are not able to form a symbiotic relationship with Brassicaceae roots due to the release of anti-fungal compounds. This means the AMF may not be able to produce GRSP in the soil. However, the differences in the benefit of cover crop incorporation were shown only by a pot experiment. Comparative investigations of crop residue managements would be applied to both pot experiment and field study to clarify a better selection of cover crops in rotation to encourage GRSP production.

Algal communities are important to maintain the aquatic ecosystems function. Algae have short life cycles, they respond quickly to environmental change and their diversity and density can indicate and the quality of their habitat. The bloom forms before the rice seedings have emerged, it may present a physical barrier that prevents the seedlings from penetrating the floodwater. Wind may also move the algal bloom, pushing the young plants beneath the surface. Another harmful action develops when the water dries up and the algae form a layer at the bottom of the field. The layer envelops the seedlings, which are not yet deeply rooted, and drag them to the surface when the water is let in again. Soil utilization pattern can be the mail facter affecting soil physico-chemical properties, especially in soil phosphorus (P). Solid content of the algae culture solution increased with the increase in the nitrogen rather the phosphors concentration. Phosphoric acid was treated with conventional treatments (100-0%, before transplanting time-tillering stage), 50-50%, 0-100%, and un-treated. The herbicide was treated on the 7 DAT (day after transplanting). Green algae samples were collected 20 DAT. Total phosphoric acid was the highest at 0.06 in 50-50% treatment in 20 DAT. The amount of green algae was about twice (9.8 mg/20ml) that of un-treated. Total number of green algae was 54 species(Green algae 35 species, Euglena 9 species, Stone wheel 10 species). Among the phosphoric acid treatment methods, the number of occurrences of green algae were the highest with 39 species in 0-100%, followed by 50-50%, 28 species, conventional treatments, 22 species, non-treatment, 18 species, respectively. Rice Yield was not significantly different by phosphoric treatment time, but slightly higher than un-treated. The maximal algal biomass was observed about 2weeks or 1 month after transplanting; the subsequent decrease of the biomass was related to the consumption by grazers and to a deficient light under the rice canopy. Maximal algal growth was observed just before tillering. To estimate the suitable method of phosphorus application in puddled-soil drill seeding of rice, available phosphorus appearance of algal water bloom, and rice yield were investigated in paddy soil of rice-barley double cropping system.

The incidence factors of Rice stripe virus (RSV) were analyzed by studying the population density and the viruliferous insect rate (VIR) of small brown planthopper (SBPH), the incidence of stripe disease, alternate host, and susceptible cultivar in Chungnam Province. The population of overwintering SBPH had been decreasing, but the VIR of overwintering SBPH had not been differing for three years, 2008 to 2010. No RSV was detected in the natural host plants, such as short awn, annual bluegrass, and barley. In 2009, relatively large population of SBPH with the VIR of 5.4% migrated from China. However, there was no evidence relating of migration large amount of SBPH from China in 2008 and 2010. Also the infection rate of RSV in rice was less than 1% in these periods. The cultivation area of the susceptible varieties had steadily decreased from 41% to 19% from 2007 to 2009. Therefore, the reduction factors of rice stripe disease in Chungnam Province with higher influx of inoculum could be with an appropriate forecasting and chemical control, cultivation of resistant varieties, changes in the cropping system, and the low winter-spring temperature.
