  • The electrochemical corrosion and passivation of Ni rotating disk electrod in borate buffer solution was studied with potentiodynamic and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The mechanisms of both the active dissolution and passivation of nickel and the hydrogen evolution in reduction reaction were hypothetically established while utilizing the Tafel slope, impedance data, the rotation speed of Ni-RDE and the pH dependence of corrosion potential and current. Based on the EIS data, an equivalent circuit was suggested. In addition, carefully measured were the electrochemical parameters for specific anodic dissolution regions. It can be concluded from the data collected that the $Ni(OH)_2$ oxide film, which is primarily formed by passivation, is converted to NiO by dehydration under the influence of an electrical field.

  • This paper describes the characteristics of poly (polycrystalline) 3C-SiC grown on SiOz and AlN substrates, respectively. The crystalline quality of poly 3C-SiC was improved from resulting in decrease of FWHM (full width half maximum) of XRD by increasing the growth temperature. The minimum growth temperature of poly 3C-SiC was $1100^{\circ}C$. The surface chemical composition and the electron mobility of poly 3C-SiC grown on each substrate were investigated by XPS and Hall Effect, respectively. The chemical compositions of surface of poly 3C-SiC films grown on $SiO_2$ and AlN were not different. However, their electron mobilities were $7.65\;cm^2/V.s$ and $14.8\;cm^2/V.s$, respectively. Therefore, since the electron mobility of poly 3C-SiC films grown on AlN buffer layer was two times higher than that of 3C-SiC/$SiO_2$, a AlN film is a suitable material, as buffer layer, for the growth of poly 3C-SiC thin films with excellent properties for M/NEMS applications.

  • The prepared dextran sulfates were characterized by measuring the reduced viscosisty at five different concentrations to obtain an intrinsic viscosity in both phosphate and tris buffers, pH 7.4, ionic strength of 0.1 Dextran sulfates having 0.81, 1.06 sulfate groups per hexose unit have reduced viscosity value below 40 ml/g whereas dextran sulfates having 1.21, 1.43, 1.69 sulfate groups per hexose unit have reduced viscosity value over 40 ml/g. Dextran sulfate having 1.21 sulfate groups per hexose unit had highest value of reduced viscosity. The reduced viscosity of dextran sulfate in tris buffer was always higher than that in phosphate buffer regardless of the sulfate content of dextran sulfate. The influence of the sulfation of the dextran sulfate. The influence of the sulfation of the dextran sulfate molecule on the dextran sulfate-LDL interaction was studied with three different dextran sulfate molecules. Dextran sulfate molecules having more than one sulfate group per hexose unit. The dextran sulfate having 0.81 sulfate groups per hexose unit showed considerably different precipitation curves in phosphate and tris buffers. This peculiar behavior of dextran sulfate having 0.81 sulfate groups per hexose unit in the two buffer systems was not noticed with dextran sulfate having more than one noticed with dextran sulfate having more than one sulfate group per hexose unit.

  • The spray method was chiefly used to prepare alginate microspheres. Additionally due to formation at mild conditions, the alginate microspheres were coated with chitosan. The particle size of alginate microspheres increased when the sodium alginate increased. Release pattern of OVA in alginate microspheres was evaluated at PBS buffer(pH 7.4) and HCl buffer(pH 1.2). Release rate of OVA from chitosan/alginate microsphere was also lower than that with the concentration of alginate in the microspheres, the amount of OVA released from alginate microspheres increased from alginate micorsphere. Therefore, the alginate microspheres can be prepared by spray rozzle for a protein drug delivery. OVA release from the alginate microspheres was controlled by a coating with chitosan.

  • The results of the experiment that was conducted on the electron emission property and the long-term stability of the emission current in various carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-based field emitters with a CNT/catalyst/buffer/W-tip configuration are presented herein. CNT-based field emitters were fabricated by varying the (TiN, Al/Ni/TiN) buffer layer and the (Ni, Co) catalyst material. This study aimed to elucidate how the buffer layers and catalyst materials affect the structural properties of CNTs and the long-term stability of CNT emitters. Raman spectroscopy, field emission SEM, and high-resolution TEM were used to analyze the crystalline structure, surface morphologies, and nanostructures of all the grown CNTs. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to monitor the chemical bonds of all the buffer layers and catalysts. Electron emission measurement and a long-term (up to 40h) stability test were carried out using a compactly designed field emission measurement system.

  • Using a three-dimensional numerical code, B3R developed for nuclide transport of an arbitrary length of decay chain in the buffer between the canister and adjacent rock in a high- level radioactive waste repository by adopting a finite difference method utilizing the control- volume scheme, some illustrative calculations have been done. A linear sorption isotherm, nuclide transport due to diffusion in the buffer and the rock matrix, and advection and dispersion along thin rigid parallel fractures existing in a saturated porous rock matrix as well as diffusion through the fracture wall into the matrix is assumed. In such kind of repository, buffer and rock matrix are known to be important physico-chemical harriers in nuclide retardation. To show effects of buffer and rock matrix on nuclide transport in HLW repository and also to demonstrate usefulness of B3R, several cases of breakthrough curves as well as three- dimensional plots of concentration isopleths associated with these two barriers are introduced for a typical case of decay chain of $^{234}$ Ulongrightarrow$^{230}$ Thlongrightarrow$^{226}$ Ra, which is the most important chain as far as the human environment is concerned.

  • Analysis of health-related microbes called probiotics was performed by capillary electrophoresis. A rapid and easy characterization for two important probiotics, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Enterococcus feacalis, was obtained in the running buffer containing poly(ethylene oxide). Quantitation of probiotic (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) shows a good linearity between the peak area versus the concentration of microbe. From the comparison of electropherograms of antidiarrhea, it was found that capillary electrophoresis could be employed for the quality control and quality assurance for the production of a medicine containing the probiotics.

  • This experiment investigated characteristic changes in a $Cu_2ZnSnS_4$(CZTS) solar cell by applying a $Zn(O_x,S_{1-x})$ butter layer with various compositions on the upper side of the absorber layer. Among the four single layers such as $Zn(O_{0.76},S_{0.24})$, $Zn(O_{0.56},S_{0.44})$, $Zn(O_{0.33},S_{0.67})$, and $Zn(O_{0.17},S_{0.83})$, the $Zn(O_{0.76},S_{0.24})$ buffer layer was applied to the device due to its bandgap structure for suppressing electron-hole recombination. In the application of the $Zn(O_{0.76},S_{0.24})$ buffer layer to the device, the buffer layer in the device showed the composition of $Zn(O_{0.7},S_{0.3})$ because S diffused into the buffer layer from the absorber layer. The $Zn(O_{0.7},S_{0.3})$ buffer layer, having a lower energy level ($E_V$) than a CdS buffer layer, improved the $J_{SC}$ and $V_{OC}$ characteristics of the CZTS solar cell because the $Zn(O_{0.7},S_{0.3})$ buffer layer effectively suppressed electron-hole recombination. A substitution of the CdS buffer layer by the $Zn(O_{0.7},S_{0.3})$ buffer layer improved the efficiency of the CZTS solar cell from 2.75% to 4.86%.

  • Sulfonated cellulose tris(3,5-dimethylphenylcarbamate) (SCDMPC)-coated zirconia monolith (ZM) was used as the chiral stationary phase in capillary electrochromatography for separation of enantiomers of ten chiral compounds in acetonitrile (ACN)-phosphate buffer mixtures as the eluent. Influences of the ACN content, buffer concentration and pH on chiral separation have been investigated. Separation data on SCDMPC-ZM have been compared with those on CDMPC-ZM. Resolution factors were better on SCDMPC-ZM than CDMPC-ZM while retention factors were in general shorter on the former than the latter. Best chiral resolutions on SCDMPC-ZM were obtained with the eluent of 50% ACN containing 50 mM phosphate at pH around 4.
