  • Recent development of photocatalytic degradation method that is mediated by TiO$_2$ is of interest in the treatment of volatile organic compounds(VOCs). In this study, trichloroethylene(TCE) and acetone were closely examined in a batch scale of photo-reactor as a function of water vapor, oxygen, and temperature. Water vapor inhibited the photocatalytic degradation of acetone, while there was an optimum concentration in TCE. A lower efficiency was found in nitrogen atmosphere than air, and the effect of oxygen on photocatalytic degradation of acetone was greater than on that of TCE. The optimum reaction temperature on photocatalytic degradation was about 45$^{\circ}C$ for both compounds. NO organic byproducts were detected for both compounds under the present experimental conditions. It was ascertained that the photocatalytic reaction in a batch scale of photo-reactor was very effective in removing VOCs such as TCE and acetone in the gaseous phase.

  • Nanosize ZnO particles were prepared by oxidation of zinc vapor and the particle growth was modeled by a coagulation model by assuming that the characteristic time for reaction was much shorter than coagulation time and residence time (${\tau}_{reaction}{\ll}{\tau}_{coagulation}{\ll}{\tau}_{residence}$). Experimental measurement of zinc oxide particles diameter was consistent with the predicted result from the coagulation model. For practical purpose of predicting zinc oxide size in areosol reactor, the constant kernel solution is concluded to be sufficient, Uniqueness of nano-scale property of zinc oxide was confirmed by the higher photocatalytic activity of zinc oxide than nanosize titania particles.

  • We have grown carbon nanotubes by thermal chemical vapor deposition of $C_{2}H_{2}$ on catalytic metal deposited on silicon oxide substrates. Highly purified carbon nanotubes are uniformly grown on a large area of the silicon oxide substrates. It is observed that surface modification of catalytic metals deposited on substrates by either etching with dipping in a HF solution and/or $NH_{3}$ pretreatment is a crucial step for the nanotube growth prior to the reaction of $C_{2}H_{2}$ gas. The diameters of carbon naotubes could be controlled by applying the different catalytic metals.

  • Carbon nanotube(CNT) has been spotlighted as a promising candidate for catalyst support material for PEMFC (proton exchange membrane fuel cell). The considerable properties of CNT include high surface area, outstanding thermal, electrical conductivity and mechanical stability. In this study, to fully utilize the properties of CNTs, we prepared directly oriented CNT on carbon paper as a catalyst support in the cathode electrode. The CNT layer was prepared by a chemical vapor deposition(CVD) process. And the Pt particles were deposited on the CNT oriented carbon paper by impregnation and eletro-deposition method. The potential advantages of directly oriented CNT on carbon paper can include improved thermal and charge transfer through direct contact between the electrolyte and the electrode and enhanced exposure of Pt catalyst sites during the reaction.

  • The objectives of this study were to develop the low pressure chemical vapor deposition(LPCVD) process of SiC and to fabricate pure and dense SiC layer onto graphite substrate at low temperature. The deposition experiments were performed using the MTS-H2 system (30 torr) in the deposition temperature ranging from 100$0^{\circ}C$ to 120$0^{\circ}C$. The deposition rate of SiC was increased with the temperature. The rate controlling step can be classified from calculated results of the apparent thermal activation energy as follows; surface reaction below 110$0^{\circ}C$ and gas phase diffusion through a stagnant layer over 110$0^{\circ}C$. The deposited layer was $\beta$-SiC with a preferred orientation of (111) and the strongly faceted SiC deposits were observed over 115$0^{\circ}C$.

  • Silicon carbide has been grown by a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technique using CH3SiCl3 and H2 gaseous mixture onto a graphite substrate. Based on the thermodynamic equilibrium studies and the suggestion that the deposition rate of SiC is controlled by surface reaction theoretical kinetic equation for CVD of silicon carbide has been proposed. The proposed theoretical kinetic equation for CVD of silicon carbide agreed well with the experimental results for the variation of the deposition rate as a function of the partial pressure of reactant gases. The Vikers microhardness of the SiC layer was about 3000∼3400 kg/$\textrm{mm}^2$ at room temperature.

  • TiC was deposited onto several substrate steels by the Chemical Vapor Deposition technique from TiCl4-CH4-H2 gas mixtures in the horizontal resistance furnace. Deposition rates and morphologies of the coatings were investigated with the carbon contents. Deposition thickness increased linearly with the deposition time in the Presence of CH4 gas. The various interlayers of coating by EDS and X-ray Diffraction were proved as Cr7C3 and Fe3C. Chromium contents did not affect the preferred orientation of TiC deposit. The deposition was controlled by a mass transport and a surface reaction in case of 1 wt% C-5.25 wt% Cr steel irrespective of deposition temperature.

  • We have synthesized carbon nanotubes by thermal chemical vapor deposition of $C_2$H$_2$ on transition metal-coated silicon substrates. Carbon nanotubes are uniformly synthesized on a large area of the plain Si substrates, different from previously reported porous Si substrates. It is observed that surface modification of transition metals deposited on substrates by either etching with dipping in a HF solution and/or NH$_3$ pretreatment is a crucial step for the nanotube growth prior to the reaction of $C_2$H$_2$gas. We will demonstrate that the diameters of carbon naotubes can be controlled by applying the different transition metals.

  • In this study, we have investigated a high-temperature AlN nucleation layer and AlGaN epilayers on c-plane sapphire substrate by low-pressure metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (LP-MOCVD). High resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Raman scattering measurements have been exploited to study the crystal quality, surface morphology, and residual strain of the HT-AlN nucleation layer. These analyses reveal that the insertion of an LT-AlN nucleation layer can improve the crystal quality, smooth the surface morphology of the HT-AlN nucleation layer and further reduce the threading dislocation density of AlGaN epifilms. The mechanism of inserting an LT-AlN nucleation layer to enhance the optical properties of HT-AlN nucleation layer and AlGaN epifilm are discussed from the viewpoint of driving force of reaction in this paper.

  • Chemical vapor deposition (CVD), ion beam sputtering (IBS) and sol-gel method were used to prepare TiO$_2$ thin films for degradation of hazardous organic compounds exemplified by 2-chlorophenol (2-CP). The influence of supporting materials and coating methods on the photocatalytic activity of the TiO$_2$ thin films were also studied. TiO$_2$ thin films were coated onto various supporting materials including steel cloth (SS), copper cloth, quartz glass tube (QGT), and silica gel (SG). Results indicate that SS (37 μm)- TiO$_2$ thin film prepared by IBS method improves the photodegradation of 2-CP. Among all supporting materials studied, SS(37 μm) is found to be the best support.
