  • Recently, high-entropy carbides have attracted considerable attention owing to their excellent physical and chemical properties such as high hardness, fracture toughness, and conductivity. However, as an emerging class of novel materials, the synthesis methods, performance, and applications of high-entropy carbides have ample scope for further development. In this study, equiatomic (Hf-Ti-Ta-Zr-Nb)C high-entropy carbide powders have been prepared by an ultrahigh-energy ball-milling (UHEBM) process with different milling times (1, 5, 15, 30, and 60 min). Further, their refinement behavior and high-entropy synthesis potential have been investigated. With an increase in the milling time, the particle size rapidly reduces (under sub-micrometer size) and homogeneous mixing of the prepared powder is observed. The distortions in the crystal lattice, which occur as a result of the refinement process and the multicomponent effect, are found to improve the sintering, thereby notably enhancing the formation of a single-phase solid solution (high-entropy). Herein, we present a procedure for the bulk synthesis of highly pure, dense, and uniform FCC single-phase (Fm3m crystal structure) (Hf-Ti-Ta-Zr-Nb)C high-entropy carbide using a milling time of 60 min and a sintering temperature of 1,600℃.

  • [ $LiNiO_2$ ] was synthesized by the solid-state method after mixing $LiOH{\cdot}H_2O$ and $Ni(OH)_2$ with SPEX mill. The optimum condition for the synthesis of $LiNiO_2$ was the calcination at $750^{\circ}C$ for 30h in $O_2$ stream after milling for 1 h. The $LiNiO_2$ synthesized under this condition showed relatively large value of $I_{003}/I_{104}$ and relatively small value of R-factor. When $LiNiO_2$ was cycled in 2.7$\~$4.15 V at 0.1C-rate, the first discharge capacity was not very large (145.8 mAh/g) but it showed good cycling performance. When $LiNiO_2$ was cycled in 2.7$\~$4.2 V at 0.1C-rate, the first discharge capacity was large but ,it showed poor cycling performance probably because of the transition of H2 hexagonal structure to H3 hexagonal structure. In addition, when $LiNiO_2$ was cycled in 1.0$\~$4.8 V at 1/24C- rate, the first discharge capacity was very large (257.7 mAh/g) and the discharge capacity increased with the number of cycles.

  • Mo-10 at.% Cu nanocomposite powders were fabricated by using planetary ball-milling (PBM), a mechanical alloying technique for preparing nanocomposite alloy powders of metals with mutual insolubility, and the variations in the physical and the chemical characteristics with the process conditions were investigated. We observed that Mo-10 at.% Cu was an appropriate composition to ensure a good alloying grade and minimal welding between particles. The influences of the temperature and the milling conditions on the mechanical alloying process and the phase change of Mo-10 at.% Cu composite powders were investigated, and the particle and the grain sizes of the powders after mechanical alloying were confirmed. The Mo-10 at.% Cu powders showed homogeneous elemental distributions and no phase changes up to $1200^{\circ}C$; their compositions were retained after the mechanical alloying process. The finest grain size obtained was about 5 nm for powders processed using optimum PBM processing conditions: ball-to-powder weight ratio of 5 : 1, ambient air atmosphere, a milling time of 20 h, a rotation speed of 200 rpm, and a stearic acid content of 4 wt.% produced superfine-grained Mo-10 at.% Cu nanocomposite powders with an average grain size of 5 nm (which is smaller than that of other similar materials reported in the literature). The analytical results confirmed that the PBM technique presented here is a promising method for preparing superfine-grained Mo-10 at.% Cu powders with improved properties.

  • This study examined the material properties of Korean rice husk ash (RHA) according to the manufacturing process, and evaluated the feasibility of its use as a new admixture for high strength concrete. For this purpose, its particle size distribution, chemical composition, and microstructure were analyzed under various parameters, such as calcination temperature ($400^{\circ}C$, $650^{\circ}C$, and $900^{\circ}C$) and the inclusion of a milling process. X-ray fluorescence analysis confirmed that the silicon oxide ($SiO_2$) content of RHA was improved to more than 92% with a calcination process at $650^{\circ}C$ or higher. In addition, microstructural analysis showed that the RHA calcined at $650^{\circ}C$ has a porous structure. Because of this, the absorption capacity of the RHA was improved. On the other hand, when the milling process was applied, the porous structure was destroyed; thus, the absorption capacity tended to decrease further. Based on the analysis results, it was concluded that RHA calcined at $650^{\circ}C$ can be used as an admixture for high strength concrete, which possesses functions of both a shrinkage reducing agent and a pozzolanic activator.

  • Femtosecond laser ablation (fs LA) was used in this study to identify pollution by heavy metals and the distribution of elemental nutrients at different rice milling ratios. Polished rice (degrees of milling of 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11) was collected from major Korean supermarkets and one sample thereof was selected. An internal quality control experiment was conducted using a rice flour certified reference material from the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS CRM) for the evaluation of the efficacy. To assess the effectiveness of the analysis method, the reliability was validated using a food analysis performance assessment scheme (FAPAS), with chili powder serving as an external quality control. The results of the analysis of the inorganic elements Ti, Ca, Al, Fe and Mn in white and brown rice with degrees of milling of 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11 using ICP-MS, ICP-OES and AAS revealed contents of 0.40, 49.2, 2.43, 5.36 and 10.3 mg/kg in white rice and 0.59, 78.0, 7.52, 11.0 and 18.5 mg/kg in brown rice, respectively. Among the elements, there were remarkable differences in the measured contents. By comparing the contents of the elements at different degrees of milling, Ti, Co, As, Ca, Al, Cu, Fe, and Mn were determined to be distributed on the surface of the rice grains, whereas the contents of Cd and Pb increased toward the center of the rice grains, and Si was evenly distributed. After the quantitative analysis of rice samples polished to different degrees of milling, Ca and Al, which were contained in large amounts, and Si were analyzed with specificity by fs LA. The results show that Ca and Al were distributed in the rice husk (protective covering of rice) and Si was distributed in all parts of the rice.

  • This study was investigated the effect of the morphology change of copper (Cu) powders under the different rotational speed and milling time by using three kinds of grinding media with different size and materials, and performed DEM simulations of ball behavior. In order to clarify the mechanism of grinding by three - dimensional simulations of the ball behavior in a traditional ball mill, the force, kinetic energy, and medium velocity of the grinding media were calculated. In the simulation, the amount of change of the input energy was also calculated by adjusting the rotational speed, ball material, kinetic velocity, and friction coefficient in the same as the actual experimental conditions. The scanning electron microscope results show that the particle morphology changes from irregular to spherical when the ball size is small.

  • In this work, Zn$_2$SiO$_4$:Mn phosphors were prepared by solid state reaction. The effect of sintering/reduction temperature, flow rate of H$_2$-5%/$N_2$-95% mix gas, and ball milling conditions have been investigated on the sake of PDP(Plasma Display Panel) application. The characteristics such as particle morphology and photoluminescence of prepared phosphors were compared to those of commercial Zn$_2$SiO$_4$:Mn Phosphors. It was found that the Phosphor synthesized at 130$0^{\circ}C$ with 0.08 Mn concentration had a maximum brightness, This brightness was increased more 20% by reduction treatment under 100me/min flow rate of 5%H$_2$-95%$N_2$ mixed gas. The size of particles decreased under 3$\mu\textrm{m}$ after ball milling. Especially, higher luminescence was obtained in our Zn$_2$SiO$_4$:Mn phosphors than commercial Zn$_2$SiO$_4$:Mn phosphors, so that they are able to be applied for PDP.
