  • In recent years, organic ginseng cultivation has increased because customers prefer organic ginseng products due to the morphological quality as well as the safety such as the residuals of chemically-synthesized pesticides. Therefore, some of paddy and upland fields were converted into organic ginseng fields. Soil chemical properties, soil microflora, and soil-inhabiting animals were investigated in paddy-converted and upland organic ginseng fields in Sangju city, Korea. There was few difference in the soil chemical properties, and the soil nutrient concentrations, such as nitrate-N, Av. $P_2O_5$ between the two field types, and exchangeable cations such as K and Ca were within the ranges which are recommended by the standard ginseng-farming manual. Changes in microflora were also assessed by analyzing phospholipid fatty acid composition. Overall, indicators of microbial groups were greater in the upland field than in the paddy-converted soil, but they were not significantly different. In addition, there was no significant change in the abundance of nematodes, collembolans, and mites between the two field types probably because of the high variation within the field types. In this study, it was suggested that soil chemical and biological properties for organic ginseng cultivation were greatly influenced by the variation of topography and soil management practices rather than field types. Further study may be needed to investigate the influence of these factors on soil chemical and biological properties in organic ginseng soils.

  • HC-SCR was conducted using Fe/ZSM5 catalyst coated over 200 cpi cordierite in the conditions of atomspheric pressure and $200^{\circ}C-500^{\circ}C$. Among the tested hydrocarbon reductants, isobutane (i-$C_4H_{10}$) showed the highest de-$NO_x$ yield of 69% at $320^{\circ}C$ with the mole ratio of reductant/$NO_x$ =1.0. De-$NO_x$ yield resulted by the change of alkane reductant was increased as the carbon number of alkane reductant was increased. The order of increase of de-$NO_x$ yield was proportional to the order of decrease of bonding energy between C and H of reductant, where the H abstraction step from alkane molecule could be the rate controlling step of HC-SCR.

  • In the case of a melting process, the velocity of waste-gas has been measured to produce the melt of an equal condition and to analyze the combustion situation of the fuel which was inputted in a furnace. Recently, there are many kinds of measuring equipments of gas-velocity on the market. But, the waste-gas produced from a melting process is high temperature, the slow speed and includes much dust. Existent measuring equipments are not suited to these conditions. Therefore, we made the measuring equipment of new method which is enough detailed to react on the slow speed and sustains in high temperature. As shown in the result of field test, the manufactured measuring equipment is so sensitive as to react on a small change of velocity and senses temperature change rapidly, we expect that this equipment helps in temperature control of a melting furnace.

  • In this paper, the density, viscosity and solubility are measured to know the physical properties of dye. By changing the concentration of dye solution, the density change of the dye solution was very small and the viscosity of the dye solution was increased. Also, by changing the temperature of dye solution, the density change of the dye solution was increased but the viscosity of the dye solution was decreased. Solubility of dye conducts under the changing the salt and concentration of dye. In 20 wt% of dye and 15 wt% KCl, the amount of dye crystal is maximal. Also, batch salting-out experiments were performed with various conditions to know the optimal operating conditions of dye crystal. Under the various experiments, optimal operating condition was found based on amount of dye; added 15 wt% KCl, $25^{\circ}C$ temperature, 100 RPM, added at once.

  • The methods for improving epichlorohydrin process was investigated by carrying out experiments on hypochlorination reaction, from which dichlorohydrin is produced by reacting with allyl chloride and chlorine. As the recycle water from PVC plant was used instead of industrial water for reaction, the effect of recycle water on the reaction yield was studied. It was shown from this experiment that the recycle water rarely affected on the ratio between products. TCPA, which was almost of byproducts, could be removed before purification process using "extractant A". This could prevent additional side reaction by TCPA and reduced energy to separate it in purification part. The change of product yield was observed as the chlorine gas addition decreases which reacted with allyl chloride. It seems that the yield of major products didn't change almost, but the byproducts showed rather reduced trend with decreasing chlorine gas.

  • A study was carried out to elucidate the relation between the production of flavonol glycosides and the change of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase activity in cell suspension cultures of Ginkgo biloba by the unassisted and synergistic effects of various factors. The quercetin production showed a mixed-growth-associated pattern in cell suspension cultures. Fluorescent light and UV radiation increased phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) activity, and resulted in the increase of the production of quercetin and kaempferol ten- and four-fold, respectively, as compared to that obtained in the normal culture condition. The cell growth of Ginkgo biloba was enhanced .at higher temperatures whereas the quercetin production was at its maximum at low temperatures. Moreover, the quercetin production was increased by temperature change during the culture period. In particular, the quercetin production was at the highest level when the culture temperature was elevated from $10^{\circ}C\;to\;30^{\circ}C$. The addition of phenylalanine as a precursor in the culture medium stimulated an 8-fold increase in the production of quercetin; the addition of naringenin caused a l0-fold increase. The quercetin production was also greatly increased by feeding enzyme cofactors such as 2-ketoglutarate and ascorbic acid in the culture medium, but specific PAL activity was not increased except with phenylalanine feeding. The synergistic effect of UV radiation and naringenin feeding was observed, resulting in the increase of flavonol glycoside production at a rate higher than in any other case investigated.

  • We have demonstrated the resonant resistance pattern changes of the polymer film in the quartz crystal analysis by the function of the molecular polarity phase transition phenomena. PVA and PMMA/PVAc blend films were used as hydrophilic and/or hydrophbic film, respectively. In the comparison between the hydrophilic shows the pattern changes near by the phase transition temperature. For more detailed explanation, the static capacity in the oscillation parameter was measured and the morphology of Au quartz crystal electrode was studied by AFM. It is suggested that the different resonant resistance pattern change is reliable in the condition of different polarity, and the conclusion is important to analysis of the real mechanism a normal quartz crystal experiments.

  • In polyolefin processes melt index (MI) is the most important controlled variable indicating product quality. Because of the difficulty in the on-line measurement of MI, a lot of MI estimation and correlation methods have been proposed. In this work a new dynamic MI estimation scheme is developed based on system identification techniques. The empirical MI estimation equation proposed in the present study is derived from the $1^{st}$-order dynamic models. Effectiveness of the present estimation scheme was illustrated by numerical simulations based on plant operation data including grade change operations in high density polyethylene (HDPE) processes. From the comparisons with other estimation methods it was found that the proposed estimation scheme showed better performance in MI predictions. Using the model predictive control method based on the present dynamic MI estimation model, MI values are estimated and compared with those of MI setpoints. From the numerical simulation of the proposed control system, it was found that significant reduction of transition time and the amount of off-spec during grade changes were achieved.

  • Background: The chemical constituents of Panax ginseng are changed by processing methods such as steaming or sun drying. In the present study, the chemical change of Panax ginseng induced by steaming was monitored in situ. Methods: Samples were separated from the same ginseng root by incision during the steaming process, for in situ monitoring. Sampling was sequentially performed in three stages; FG (fresh ginseng) ${\rightarrow}$ SG (steamed ginseng) ${\rightarrow}$ RG (red ginseng) and 60 samples were prepared and freeze dried. The samples were then analyzed to determine 43 constituents among three stages of P. ginseng. Results: The results showed that six malonyl-ginsenoside (Rg1, Rb1, Rb3, Rc, Rd, Rb2) and 15 amino acids were decreased in concentration during the steaming process. In contrast, ginsenoside-Rh1, 20(S)-Rg2, 20(S, R)-Rg3 and Maillard reaction product such as AF (arginine-fructose), AFG (arginine-fructose-glucose), and maltol were newly generated or their concentrations were increased. Conclusion: This study elucidates the dynamic changes in the chemical components of P. ginseng when the steaming process was induced. These results are thought to be helpful for quality control and standardization of herbal drugs using P. ginseng and they also provide a scientific basis for pharmacological research of processed ginseng (Red ginseng).

  • Silicon is a promising next-generation anode material for lithium-ion battery, and it has been studied for commercialization due to the high theoretical capacity. However, it has problems of the volume change during charge-discharge and the poor electrical conductivity. To solve these problems, formation of SiO2 and carbon coating on the surface of silicon crystal were performed to protect the side reaction and enhance the electrical conductivity of silicon. CNT and CNF were also added to mitigate the volume change and increase the conductivity. Physical properties of asprepared samples were analyzed by XRD, SEM, and EDS. Electrochemical characteristics were investigated by electrical conductivity measurement, EIS, CV and cycle performance test. (Si/SiO2/C)+CNT&CNF showed high electrical conductivity and low charge-transfer resistance, and the capacity was 1528 mAh/g at 1st cycle and 1055 mAh/g at 50th cycle with 83% capacity retention.
