Chelating agents 1,4,7-triazacyclononanetriacetic acid (NOTA), 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7,10-tetraacetic acid (DOTA) and 30-amino-3,14,25-trihydroxy-3,9,14,20,25-penta-azatriacontane-2,10,13,21,24-pentaone (desferrioxamine, DFO) were labeled with $^{68}Ga$ and tested in vitro properties to check the feasibility of using DFO as a bifunctional chelating agent or renal imaging agent. The chelating agents of concentration $2{\mu}M$ were labeled with $^{68}Ga$ in 0.1 M HCl at pH 1.7-10.3 at room temperature and $80^{\circ}C$ and the optimal pH for labeling each chelating agent was found. And then, the chelating agents were labeled with $^{68}Ga$ in various concentration of chelating agents at optimal pH. The labeled chelating agents were subject to stability test in human serum and to binding studies to human red blood cell (RBC) and plasma protein. The optimal pH's of NOTA, DOTA and DFO for $^{68}Ga$-labeling were 4.4, 3.6 and 5.6, respectively. DFO ($10{\mu}M$) showed high labeling efficiency (>97%) at pH 5.6. All the labeled chelating agents showed high stability in human serum. $^{68}Ga$-DFO showed low RBC binding but significant amount was bound to plasma protein. The results demonstrated that $^{68}Ga$-DFO can be used as a bifunctional chelating agent but not as a renal imaging agent.

In this study, the degradation of BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene) was tested in both (Fe$^{3+}$+chelating agent)/H$_2$O$_2$system [Fe(III) 1 mM, oxalate 6 mM, H$_2$O$_2$ 3%, and pH 6] and UV/(Fe3++ chelating agent)lHzOz system [UV dose 17.4 kWhlL, Fe(III) 1mM, oxalate 6 mM,H$_2$O$_2$ 1%, and pH 6]. The types of chelating agents used in experiments were catechol, NTA, gallic, acetyl acetone, succinic, acetate, EDTA, citrate, malonate, and oxalate and the optimum chelating agent for BTEX degradation was determined. The results showed that acetate was the optimum chelating agent for BTEX degradation in both (Fe$^{3+}$+chelating agent)/H$_2$O$_2$ and UV/(Fe$^{3+}$+chelating agent)/H$_2$O$_2$ system, and UV radiation enhanced the degradation of BTEX with any types of chelating agents. Moreover, UV/(Fe$^{3+}$+chelating agent)/H$_2$O$_2$ system, which chelating agent was acetate, removed effectively mixtures of BTEX and MTBE (methyl tert-butyl ether) when the concentration of both BTEX and MTBE was 200 mg/L, respectively. In this system, BTEX was degraded completely and 85% of MTBE was degraded at the reaction time of 180 min. Therefore, UV/((Fe$^{3+}$+chelating agent)/H$_2$O$_2$ system with acetate as a chelating agent removed not only BTEX but also BTEX and MTBE, effectively.
Major egg white proteins and their hydrolysates serve as functional food ingredients that have certain metal-chelating properties. Employing egg white proteins and their hydrolysates to scavenge dietary oxalates is anticipated to have beneficial effect in the prevention of kidney stones. The objective of this study was to determine the biogenic oxalate-chelating activity of ovalbumin, ovomucin, and ovotransferrin and their hydrolysates. To prepare oxalate extracts, 30 mL of 0.25 N HCl was added to separately to 0.5 g of dried spinach and starfruit powders followed by boiling for 15 min, and after cooling, the addition of a further 20 mL of 0.25 N HCl. Having prepared these extracts, ovalbumin, ovomucin, and ovotransferrin and their hydrolysates were separately mixed with oxalate extracts and incubated at 3℃ for 24 h. Following centrifugation, supernatants were analyzed by HPLC using a reverse-phase C18 column coupled with a diode array detector. We found that all assessed proteins and their hydrolysates showed biogenic oxalate-chelating activity against the oxalates of spinach. In contrast, however, only ovalbumin, ovalbumin-hydrolysate, and ovomucin showed chelating activity (57.10%±8.84%, 85.44%±5.30%, 73.20%±4.13%, respectively) against the oxalates of starfruit (P<0.05). Overall, hydrolyzed ovalbumin was identified as the most effective chelator of the oxalates both spinach and starfruit. In this study, we thus established that the assessed egg white proteins and their hydrolysates have oxalate-chelating activity in vitro, thereby indicating that these compounds have potential utility as nutraceuticals for the chelation of dietary oxalate. However, further research will be necessary to verify their oxalate-chelating activities against different fruits and vegetables and under specific in vivo conditions and against purified oxalate.
Some chelating agents are evaluated as an antioxidant for the autoxidation of soybean oil. Soybean oil is autoxidized under a mild condition (the flow rate of 67ml $O_{2}/min$ and $50^{\circ}C$). The antioxidant effect is measured by active oxygen method, and the spectral change of autoxidized soybean oil examined. The antioxidant effect of chelating agents is increased in order of diphenic acid, naphthoquinone, pyromellitic acid, quinolinic acid and naphthalic acid, and particularly the effect is low in diphenic acid and naphthoquinone. It is found that the effect is more clearly demonstrated by NMR rather than IR and UV and that the effect is dependent on the functional group and geometric molecular structure of chelating agents.
The incubation study was conducted under aerobic and anaerobic conditions to study the release of the kinetically labile forms (i. e. chelating ion or anion forms) of Cd, Cu and Zn in sludge-untreated soil ("Control"), sludge 50 and $100dry\;Mg\;ha^{-1}$ treated soils ("Soil-Sludge mixtures"), and sewage sludge ("Sludge"). The chelating ion and anion exchange membranes were embedded into the samples and incubated for 16 weeks under aerobic and anaerobic condition. The total amounts of chelating ion or anionic forms of Cd were too little to be measured during both aerobic and anaerobic incubation. On the other hand, the total amounts of chelating ion or anionic forms of Cu and Zn slightly increased throughout the incubation period under both incubation conditions. For "Control" and "Soil-Sludge mixtures" treatments, the total amounts of Cu and Zn in chelating ion and anion exchange membrane were little difference between aerobic and anaerobic condition, and the total amounts of chelating ion form of Cu and Zn were not different from the those of anionic form of Cu and Zn. However, for "Sludge" treatment, the total amounts of Cu and Zn in anion and chelating ion exchange membrane were greater under aerobic condition than under anaerobic condition, and the total amounts of chelating ion form of Cu and Zn were greater than those of anion form of Cu and Zn under both incubation conditions.
In order to examine the influences of diluent, DVB, and ligand content, in the adsorption velocities and capacities of chelating resins to heaw metal ions, the chelating resins containing the PO$_3$H, amide, and PO$_3$H+amide were prepared from AN-STR-DVB copolymer. The adsorption capacities of chelating resins were measured by ICP-AES. The major results of the studies are as follows: The optimized compositions of the chelating resins having the highest adsorptivity for the heavy metal ions were found to be DVB=7 wt%, toluene= 100 vol%. The adsorption rate of the chelating resins to the heaw metal ions was PO$_3$H > PO$_3$H+Amide > Amide in order.
Phytoextraction is a method of phytoremediation using plants to remediate metal-contaminated soils. Recently, various chelating agents were used in this method to increase the bioavailability of metals in soils. Even though phytoextraction is an economic and environment-friendly method, this cannot be applied in highly metal-contaminated areas because plants will not normally grow in such conditions. This research focuses on identifying chelating agents which are biodegradable and applicable to highly metal-contaminated areas. Lead (Pb) as a target metal and cysteine (Cys), histidine (His), citrate, malate, oxalate, succinate, and ethylenediamine (EDA) as biodegradable chelating agents were selected. Ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) was used as a comparative standard. Plants were grown on agar media containing various chelating agents with Pb to analyze the effect on root growth. Cys strongly increased the inhibitory effect of Pb on root growth of plants, while, His did not affect on it significantly. The inhibitory effect of oxalate is weak, and malate, citrate, and succinate did not show significant effects. Both EDTA and EDA diminished the inhibitory effect of Pb on root growth. The effect of EDA is correlated with decreased Pb uptake into the plants. In conclusion, as biodegradable chelating agents, EDA is a good candidate for highly Pb-contaminated area.

Three Arsenazo I-XAD Chelating resins, with different surface areas and pore sizes were synthesized and characterized. The total sorption capacities of these chelating resins for Cu(II) at pH 5.0 by batch method decreased as follows, Arsenazo I-XAD-16(0.59mmol/g)>Arsenazo I-XAD-4(0.56mmol/g)>Arsenazo I-XAD-2(0.38mmol/g). The sorption and desorption properties of Arsenazo I-XAD-16 chelating resins for U(VI), Th(IV), Hf(IV), Zr(IV), Ni(II), Mn(II), Cd(II). and Cu(II) were studied by both batch and elution method. The Arsenazo I-XAD-16 chelating resin was successfully applied to the separation and concentration of trace U(VI) and Th(IV) in sea and waste waters.
Three kinds of macro-reticular bead-typed chelating resins having thiol groups were obtained from basic resins like poly(strene-co-divinylbenzene) (PSD) and poly(styrene-co-methyl methacrylate-co-divinylbenzene) (PSMD): the chelating resin (I) was prepared by chloromethylation of phenyl rings of PSD followed by thiolation using thiourea. The chelating resin (ll) was designed to provide enough space to chelate heavy metal ions; one chloromethyl group was obtained by chlorination of hydroxymethyl group provided by reduction of carboxylic ester group of PSMD and another chloromethyl group was obtained by direct chloromethylation of pendent phenyl group using chloromethyl methyl ether. Both of chloromethyl groups were thiolated by using thiourea. The chelating resin (III) was prepared by chlorosulfonation of phenyl rings of PSD followed by thiolation using sodium hydrosulfide. The adsorbtivity toward heavy metal ions was evaluated. The hydrophobic chelating resin (I) with thiol groups showed highly selective adsorption capacity f3r mercury ions. However, the chelating resin (II) with thiol groups showed mere effective adsorption capacity toward mercury ions than chelating resin (I) with thiol groups, and showed some adsorption capacity for other heavy metal ions like Cu$\^$2+/, Pb$\^$2+/, Cd$\^$2+/ and Cr$\^$3+/. On the other hand, the chelating resin (III) which have hydrophilic thiosulfonic acid groups was found to be effective adsorbents for some heavy metal ions such as Hg$\^$2+/, Cu$\^$2+/, Ni$\^$2+/, Co$\^$2+/, Cr$\^$3+/ and especially Cd$\^$2+/ and Pb$\^$2+/.
Thise study aimed to determine the optimum antioxidant extraction conditions of dried Gugija (Lycium chinensis Mill). To determine the operational parameters, including ethanol concentration ($X_1$, 0~80%) and extraction time ($X_2$, 1~5 hr), a response surface methodology was applied to monitor brown color intensity, total phenolic compounds, ABTS radical scavenging activity, and $Fe^{2+}$ chelating activity. Coefficients of determinations ($R^2$) of the models were 0.8486~0.9214 (p<0.05~0.1) in dependent parameters. Brown color intensity of Gugija extracts reached a maximum of 0.75 (OD in 420 nm) under extraction conditions of 2.88 hr in 78.10% ethanol. Total phenolic compounds reached a maximum of $2,355{\mu}g$ under extraction conditions of 4.94 hr in 30.17% ethanol. ABTS radical scavenging activity was 13.83% at 4.61 hr and 16.21% ethanol. $Fe^{2+}$ chelating activity showed a maximum of 58.54% under extraction conditions of 3.39 hr in 0.76% ethanol. Optimum extraction conditions (5 hr extraction in 15% ethanol) were obtained by superimposing the contour maps with regards to total phenolic compounds, ABTS radical scavenging activity, and $Fe^{2+}$ chelating activity of dried Gugija. Maximum values of total phenolic compounds, ABTS radical scavenging activity, and $Fe^{2+}$ chelating activity under optimum extraction condition were $2,397{\mu}g$, 15.62% and 54.78%, respectively.
