A protocol HMNR, was proposed to utilize control information of every other process piggybacked on each sent message for minimizing the number of forced checkpoints. Then, an improved protocol, called Lazy-HMNR, was presented to lower the possibility of taking forced checkpoints incurred by the asymmetry between checkpointing frequencies of processes. Despite these two different minimization techniques, if the high message interaction traffic occurs, Lazy-HMNR may considerably lower the probability of knowing whether there occurs no Z-cycle due to its shortcomings. Also, we recognize that no previous work has smart procedures to be able to utilize network infrastructures for highly decreasing the number of forced checkpoints with dependency information carried on every application message. We introduce a novel Lazy-HMNR protocol for group communication-based distributed computing systems to cut back the number of forced checkpoints in a more effective manner. Our simulation outcomes showed that the proposed protocol may highly lessen the frequency of forced checkpoints by comparison to Lazy-HMNR.
Communication induced checkpointing (CIC) is one of the checkpointing techniques to provide fault tolerance for distributed systems. Independent checkpoints that each distributed process produces without coordination are likely to be useless. Useless checkpoints, which cannot belong to any consistent global checkpoint sets, induce nondeterminant rollback. To prevent the useless checkpoints, CIC forces processes to take additional checkpoints at proper moment. The number of those forced checkpoints is the main source of failure-free overhead in CIC. In this paper, we present two new CIC protocols which satisfy 'No Z-Cycle (NZC)'property. The proposed protocols reduce the number of forced checkpoints compared to the existing protocols with the drawback of the increase in message delay. Our simulation results with the synthetic data show that the proposed protocols have lower failure-free overhead than the existing protocols. Additionally, we show that the classical 'index-based checkpointing' protocols are inefficient in constructing the consistent global cut in distributed executions.
This paper presents a garbage collection protocol for checkpoints and message logs which are staved on the stable storage or volatile storage for fault tolerancy. The previous works of garbage collections in coordinated checkpointing protocol delete all the checkpoints except for the last checkpoints on earth processes. But implemented in top of reliable communication protocol like as TCP/IP, rollback recovery protocol based on only last checkpoints makes sympathetic rollback. We show that the old checkpoints or message logs except for the last checkpoints have to be preserved in order to replay the lost message. And we define the conditions for garbage collection of checkpoints and message logs for lost messages and present the garbage collection algorithm for checkpoints and message logs in coordinated checkpointing protocol. Since the proposed algorithm uses process information for lost message piggybacked with messages, the additional messages for garbage collection is not required The proposed garbage collection algorithm makes 'the lazy garbage collectioneffect', because relying on the piggybacked checked checkpoint information in send/receive message. But 'the lazy garbage collection effect'does not break the consistency of the whole systems.
According to the statistics revealed by Bank of Korea on March, 2007, Internet banking transactions outnumbered face-to-face banking services in Korea. Internet banking is becoming essential in every financial service sectors. For people with disabilities, Internet banking is more meaningful because they do not need to visit the bank, thereby saving inconvenient trips. Governments in many countries are working on setting standards and laws on the web accessibility for people with disabilities. Korea government enacted Korea Disability Discrimination Act in 2007. This paper examined the web accessibility compliance of Internet banking sites. Twenty one Internet banking sites were selected from the list in the Korea Federation of Banks's Web sites. We examined four major checkpoints that are considered crucial among the fourteen checkpoints in "Internet Web Contents Accessibility Guidelines" which was amended by Ministry of the information and Communication in 2005. The results showed that all of the twenty one Internet banking sites didn't meet the four major checkpoint requirements. Moreover, only one banking site satisfied alt-text requirement that is considered the most fundamental among the checkpoints.

In this paper, we propose a new checkpointing strategy for dual modular redundancy real-time systems. For every checkpoints the execution results from two processors, and the result saved in the previous checkpoint are compared to detect faults. We devised an operation algorithm in chectpoints to recover from transient faults as well as permanent faults. We also develop a Markov model for the optimization of the proposed checkpointing strategy. The probability of successful task execution within its deadline is derived from the Markov model. The optimal number of checkpoints is the checkpoints which makes the successful probability maximum.

This paper presents an optimal checkpoint strategy for fault-tolerance in real-time systems. In our environment, multiple real-time tasks with arbitrary periods are scheduled in the system by Rate Monotonic (RM) algorithm, and checkpoints are inserted at a constant interval in each task while the width of interval is different with respect to the task. We propose a method to determine the optimal checkpoint interval for each task so that the probability of completing all the tasks is maximized. Whenever a fault occurs to a checkpoint interval of a task, the execution time of the task would be prolonged by rollback and re-execution of checkpoints. Our scheme includes the schedulability test to examine whether a task can be completed with an extended execution time. A numerical experiment is conducted to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed scheme.

We analyze checkpoint strategy for multiple real-time periodic tasks with hard deadlines. Real-time tasks usually have deadlines associated with them. For multiple real-time tasks, checkpoint strategy considering deadlines of all tasks is very difficult to derive. We analyze the problem of checkpoint placement for such multiple periodic tasks. In our strategy, the interval between checkpoints is determined for each task considering its deadline. An approximated failure probability over a specified interval is derived. Then the number of checkpoints for each task is selected to minimize the approximated failure probability. To show the usefulness of our strategy, error bound between the exact and the approximated failure probability is estimated, which is revealed to be quite small.

For a successful checkpointing strategy, we should place checkpoints so as to optimize fault-tolerance capability of real-time systems. This paper presents a novel scheme of checkpoint placement for real-time systems with periodic multi-tasks. Under the influence of transient faults, multi-tasks are scheduled by the Rate Monotonic (RM) algorithm. The optimal checkpoint intervals are derived to maximize the probability of task completion. In particular, this paper is concerned about the general case that the deadline of a task is longer than the period. Compared with the special condition that the deadline is equal to or less than the period, this general case causes a more complicate test procedure for schedulability of the RM algorithm with respect to a given set of checkpoint re-execution vectors. The probability of task completion is also derived in a more complex form. A case study is given to show the applicability of the proposed scheme.
Evaluation of multilingual translation fundamentally involves measurement of meaning equivalences between the formally mapped discourses/texts of SL(source language) and TL(target language) both represented by a metalanguage called IL(interlingua). Unlike a usaal uni-directional MT(machine translation) model(e.g.:SL $\rightarrow$ analysis $\rightarrow$ transfer $\rightarrow$ generation $\rightarrow$ TL), a bi-directional(by 'negotiation') model(i.e.: SL $\rightarrow$ IL/S $\leftrightarrow$ IL $\leftrightarrow$ IL/T \leftarrow TL) is proposed here for the purpose of evaluating multilingual, not merely bilingual, translation. The IL, as conceived of in this study, is an English-based predicate logic represented in the framework of MRS(minimal recursion semantics), an MT-oriented off-shoot of HPSG(Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar). In addition, a list of semantic and pragmatic checkpoints are set up, some being optional depending on the kind and use of the translation, so sa to have the evaluation of translation fine-grained by computing matching or mismatching of such checkpoints.
Recently, as the demand for physical security technology to prevent leakage of technical and business information of companies and public institutions increases, the high tech companies are operating X-ray security checkpoints at building entrances to protect their intellectual property and technology. X-ray security checkpoints are operated to detect cameras and storage media that may store or leak important technologies in the bags of people entering and leaving the building. In this study, we propose an X-ray security checkpoint system that automatically detects a storage medium in an X-ray image using a deep learning based object detection method. The proposed system consists of an edge computing unit and a cloud-computing unit. We employ the RetinaNet for automatic storage media detection in the X-ray security checkpoint images. The proposed approach achieved mAP of 95.92% on private dataset.
