  • In the hot strip mill, not only the chatter vibration of finishing stands has a great influence on the surface quality of hot products, but also that is the major factors to shorten the life of rolling mill housings or to create the machine troubles. As long as the mill has been operating, the low frequency chatter at the early mill stands (No.2 and No.3) of POSCO's Kwangyang No.2 hot strip mill had been detected when rolling certain types of products, e.g., thinner gage, hard grade products. For several years, the experimental study was undertaken to analyze the cause of the chatter vibration and establish the methods to avoid the vibration to acceptable levels. The analysis and solution to the vibration problem with recommendations and revised maintenance practice are the subjects of this article.

  • Chattering during the milling process causes severe problems on both the workpiece and cutting tools. However, chatter vibration is the inevitable phenomenon that operators require the prediction before the process or monitoring system to avoid the chatter in real-time. To predict the chatter vibration with the stability lobe diagram, the dynamic parameters of machine tool are extracted by considering cutting conditions and adapting the material properties. In this study, experimental verifications were taken for various aluminum types with different feed rates to observe the effect of the key parameters. The comparison between experimental results and the predictions was also performed.

  • There were many researches about the chatter vibration occur in the cutting process of machine tools. But there are in sufficient research parts ; the frequency about the chatter vibration and its characteristics and its nonlinear properties. This paper measured signals of vibration that occur before and immediately after and after the chatter vibration. This signals were analyzed through autospectrum obtained by the Fast Fourier Transform(FFT). And then, the nonlinear characteristis were analyzed by cepstrum analysis through FFT of autospectrun.

  • The elimination of chatter vibration is necessary to improve the precision and the productivity of the cutting operation. A new mathematical model of chatter vibration is pressented in order to predict dynamic cutting force from static cutting data. Chatter vibration occurring in the tool structure of lathe is treated theoretically, considering the regenerative effect. The Stability Analysis is carried out by a two degress of freedom system. The dynamic cutting force is analytically expressed by the static cutting coefficient and the dynamic cutting coeccicient which can be determined from the cutting mechanics. The static cutting coefficient controls high speed chatter stability, while the dynamic cutting coefficient dominates low chatter stability. From above considerations, the cirtical width of cut which governs chatter stability was obtained.

  • The monitoring of the chatter vibration is necessarily required to do automatic manufacturing system. To this study, we constructed a sensing system using tool dynamometer in order to the chatter vibration on cutting process. And a approach to a neural network using the feature of principal cutting force signals is proposed. with the error back propagation training process, the neural network memorized and classified the feature of principal cutting force signals. As a result, it is shown by neural network that the chatter vibration can be monitored effectively.

  • This paper presents several time series methods to analyze the chatter mechanics by using the power spectrum of these algorithms considering the cutting dynamics. In this study, several time series models such as AR(burg, forwardbackward, geometric lattice, instrument variable, least square, Yule Walker), ARX(1s, iv4), ARMAX, ARMA, Box Jenkins, Output Error were modeled and compared with one another. Finally, it was proven that time series modelings are also a desirable and reliable algorithm than the other conventional methods(FFT) for the calculation of the chatter mode in turning operation. Also, the spectrum of times series methods is a little bit more powerful than the FFT fer the detection of a high noisy and weak chatter mode. The radial cutting force Fy has been used for spectrum and chatter stability lobe analysis in this study.

  • In metal cutting, Chatter is an unstable cutting phenomenon which is due to the interaction of the dynamics of the chip removal process and the structural dynamics of machine tool. when vibration and chatter occurs, it reduces tool life, results in poor surface roughness and low productivity of the machining process. In this study, the experiments were conducted in CNC lathe without cutting fluid to investigated phenomenon of the chatter, In the experiments, accelerometers were set up at the tail stock and tool holder and the signals were picked up. In order to observe the effect of chatter on the surface roughness profiles, in this paper, surface roughness profiles will be generated under the ideal condition and the occurrence of the chatter based on the surface simulation model.

  • This paper presents the chatter stability lobes of high speed spindle of five-axis machine tools. Using a FEM, we obtained the frequency response function of a spindle and the stability lobes for evaluation of chatter. In addition, this paper suggest FRF using by FEM for the prediction of chatter stable region and critical cutting depth. Therefore, critical cutting depth of is 1.3586mm and X, Y direction's chatter frequency is 901Hz and 900Hz, respectively.

  • Chatter Vibration is an unwanted phenomenon in metal cutting and it always affects surface finish, tool life, machine life and the productivity of machining process. The real-time detection of the chatter vibration is is necessarily required to automation system. In this study, we constructed the multi-sensing system using Tool Dynamometer, Accelermeter and AE sensor. Especially, Acoustic Emission(AE) generated during turning was investigated the possibility for real-time detection of chatter vibration. Turning experiments were performed using carbide insert tip under realistic cutting conditions and tapered workpiece of SM45C. Consquently, the real-time detection using multi-sensing system can be used for Inprocess monitoring of chatter vibration.
