  • Polycrystalline silicon films were deposited using hot wire CVD (HWCVD). The deposition of silicon thin films was approached by the theory of charged clusters (TCC). The TCC states that thin films grow by self-assembly of charged clusters or nanoparticles that have nucleated in the gas phase during the normal thin film process. Negatively charged clusters of a few nanometer in size were captured on a transmission electron microscopy (TEM) grid and observed by TEM. The negatively charged clusters are believed to have been generated by ion-induced nucleation on negative ions, which are produced by negative surface ionization on a tungsten hot wire. The electric current on the substrate carried by the negatively charged clusters during deposition was measured to be approximately $-2{\mu}A/cm^2$. Silicon thin films were deposited at different $SiH_4$ and $H_2$ gas mixtures and filament temperatures. The crystalline volume fraction, grain size and the growth rate of the films were measured by Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The deposit ion behavior of the si1icon thin films was related to properties of the charged clusters, which were in turn controlled by the process conditions. In order to verify the effect of the charged clusters on the growth behavior, three different electric biases of -200 V, 0 V and +25 V were applied to the substrate during the process, The deposition rate at an applied bias of +25 V was greater than that at 0 V and -200 V, which means that the si1icon film deposition was the result of the deposit ion of charged clusters generated in the gas phase. The working pressures had a large effect on the growth rate dependency on the bias appled to the substrate, which indicates that pressure affects the charging ratio of neutral to negatively charged clusters. These results suggest that polycrystalline silicon thin films with high crystalline volume fraction and large grain size can be produced by control1ing the behavior of the charged clusters generated in the gas phase of a normal HWCVD reactor.

  • From both techlical and economic viewpoints, DiffServ IP QoS architecture is accepted as a more practical solution because of the complexity Problem of the other IntServ architecture. In this paper, we propose several models to support DiffServ QoS in DSL broadband access networks and discuss about migration path from current best-effort DSL networks to DiffServ-enabled ones. Since DSL networks are recently and widely deployed in the world amount ot new investment, compatibility with existing QoS-unaware DSL systems, and compatibility with existing charging systems as well as effective support of various QoS services must be carefully considered when we design DiffServ QoS support models in DSL networks. The DiffServ models proposed in this paper are divided into static DiffServ models and dynamic DiffServ models which are near-term solutions and long-term solutions repecitively. The static DiffServ models include Flat DiffServ which suworts per-subscriber DiffServ QoS and Structured DiffServ which supports per-subscriber and per-service DiffServ QoS. And the dynamic DiffServ models include Direct DiffServ for P2P(Peer to Peer) applications and Indirect DiffServ for ASP(Application Service Provider) applications.

  • Excess tritium analysis was peformed to verify whether or not cold fusion occurs during electrolysis of heavy water in the current density range of 83~600 mA/$\textrm{cm}^2$ for a period of 24 ~ 48 hours with use of palladium electrodes of seven different processing treatments and geometries. The extent of recombination of D$_2$ and $O_2$gases in the electrolytic cell was measured for the calculation of accurate enthaplpy values. The behavior and interaction of hydrogen atoms with defects in Pd electrodes were examined using the Sieverts gas charging and the positron annihilation(PA) method. Slight enrichment of tritium observed was attributed to electrolytic enrichment but not to the formation of a by-product of cold fusion. The extent of recombination of D$_2$and $O_2$gases was 32%. Hence the excess heat measured during the electrolysis was considered to be due to the exothermic reaction of recombination but not to nuclear fusion. Lifetime results from the PA measurements on the Pd electrodes indicated that hydrogen atoms could be trapped at dislocations and vacancies in the electrodes and that dislocations were slightly more preferred sites than vacancies. It was also inferred from R parameters that the formation of hydrides was accompanied by generation of mostly dislocations. Doppler broadening results of the Pd electrodes indicated that lattiec defect sites where positrons were trapped first increased and then decreased, and this cycle was repeated as electrolysis continued. It can be inferred from PA measurements on the cold-rolled Pd and the isochronally annealed Pd hydride specimens that microvoid-type defects existed in the hydrogen-charged electrode specimen.

  • Vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) is an energy conversion device in which charging and discharging are alternatively carried out by oxidation and reduction reactions of vanadium ions with different oxidation states. VRFB consists of electrolyte, electrode, ion-exchange membrane, etc. The role of ion-exchange membranes in VRFB separates anolyte and catholyte and provides a high conductivity to hydrogen ions. Recently much attention has been devoted to develop ideal ion-exchange membranes for VRFB. A number of developed ion-exchange membranes should be evaluated to find out ideal ion-exchange membranes for VRFB. Long-term durability test is a crucial characterization of ion-exchange membranes for commercialization, but is very time-consuming. In this study, the life time prediction protocol of ion-exchange membranes in VRFB cell tests was developed through short-term single cell performance evaluation (real total operation time, 87.5 hrs) at three different current densities. We confirmed a decrease in test time up to 96.2% of real durability tests (expected total operation time, 2,296 hrs) and 5~6% of relative error discrepancy between the predicted and the real life time in a unit cell.

  • SEI (solid electrolyte interphase) layers are generated on a graphite negative electrode from three different electrolytes and low-temperature ($-30^{\circ}C$) charge/discharge performance of the graphite electrode is examined. The electrolytes are prepared by adding 2 wt% of vinylene carbonate (VC) and fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) into a standard electrolyte solution. The charge-discharge capacity of graphite electrode shows the following decreasing order; FEC-added one>standard>VC-added one. The polarization during a constant-current charging shows the reverse order. These observations illustrate that the SEI film resistance and charge transfer resistance differ according to the used additives. This feature has been confirmed by analyzing the chemical composition and thickness of three SEI layers. The SEI layer generated from the standard electrolyte is composed of polymeric carbon-oxygen species and the decomposition products ($Li_xPF_yO_z$) of lithium salt. The VC-derived surface film shows the largest resistance value even if the salt decomposition is not severe due to the presence of dense film comprising C-O species. The FEC-derived SEI layer shows the lowest resistance value as the C-O species are less populated and salt decomposition is not serious. In short, the FEC-added electrolyte generates the SEI layer of the smallest resistance to give the best low-temperature performance for the graphite negative electrode.

  • Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is one of the energy harvesting methods in spotlight that can convert mechanical energy into electricity. As TENGs produce high electrical output, previous studies have shown TENGs that can power small electronics independently. However, recent studies have reported limitations of TENG due to air breakdown and field emission. In this study, we developed a triboelectric nanogenerator that utilizes the metal-to-metal surface contact to induce ion-enhanced field emission and electron avalanche for electrons to flow directly between two electrodes. The average peak open-circuit voltage of this TENG was measured as 340 V, and average peak closed-circuit current was measured as 10 mA. The electrical output of this TENG has shown different value depending on the surface charge of surface charge generation layer. The TENG developed in this study have produced RMS power of 0.9 mW, which is 2.4 times higher compared to conventional TENGs. The TENG developed in this study can be utilized in charging batteries and capacitors to power portable electronics and sensors independently.

  • In Korea, the Emergency Medical Service, EMS is provided by Fire Services with 119 EMS and all the public uses the service for free. Although it appears very successful and is respected nationally, structural problem EMS exist and are worsening. First of all, the "free riding effect" becomes increasingly problematic. Some argue that 30% of the demands is not urgent or emergent. The total number of demands is increasing even without the free riding effect. The Current EMS system itself cannot meet the increasing EMS demand. The medical aspect is so poor that the EMS cannot dispatch a medical specialist to the scene. The cardiac arrest resuscitation rate is only $1.24{\sim}9.9%$, compared to 40% in Boston, MA, USA. But due to the regulations and limitations of the Fire Service organization, it is difficult to secure enough EMS resources. To work out these problems, it needs a structural innovation. To secure enough resources and achieve higher medical performance we should invite the medical sector and the private sector into EMS arena by contracting partnerships with Fire Services and charging a reasonable EMS fee. We found through statistical test that any partnership system is more effective than fire-alone system and most countries around the world have partnership system rather than fire-alone system.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of negatively electric field on bone healing in rabbit segmental long bone defects using negatively charged PTFE membrane. Ten millimeter segmental defects in the rabbit radius were used as the experimental model. After membranes were then charge injected using a corona-charging apparatus, the left defects were covered with non charged PTFE membranes as control groups, whereas the right defect was covered with negatively charged PTFE membranes as test group. The animals were divided into 4 groups of 2 rabbits each, and sacrificed at 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks. Histomorphometric analysis showed a more newly formed bone in negatively charged membrane at early healing period. At 2 weeks, the proportion of new bone formation to total defect area was 0.32% in control group, 1.10% in experimental group. At 4 weeks, the proportion of new bone formation to total defect area was 6.86% in control, and 13.75% in experimental. At 6 and 8 weeks, no obvious difference was found between the two groups but newly formed bone in test groups were slightly more than that in control groups. In conclusion, negatively charged membranes showed more newly bone tissue than noncharged membranes at an early healing period. Although the number of samples was small, this study showed that the combination of negatively electrical stimulation and P1FE membrane may be of value in long bone healing.

  • It is informed that the Voice over LTE(VoLTE) which serves voice and message on IP networks is better in terms of economies of scale than the legacy voice service on 2G/3G circuit-switched networks because of its technological and cost efficiency. In addition, services of voice and data are running on a single LTE network and as a result VoLTE has the more economies of scope. But, there is no study about how much technology-efficiency VoLTE has compared to circuit-based voice service and how much voice charge can be reduced as VoLTE grows up. This paper analyzes empirically cost-efficiency of VoLTE against circuit-based voice service and quantifies the reduction of voice charge as 2G/3G voice traffic shifts to VoLTE. The results describe the first is that the average cost of the total voice traffic rises shortly just after the investment of LTE network for providing VoLTE but it will soon have a capacity available to reduce the charge due to VoLTE's outstanding cost efficiency on the assumption that voice traffic is fixed, and the second is that the charge can be cut to 60% of the current rate in case of all the voice traffic moves to VoLTE. The latter proves partially the validation of data-focusing pricing plan. Our results are expected to become basic data for network operators' establishing pricing strategies and for policy makers' inducing price cutting.

  • In this study, anthraquinone-2,7-disulfonic acid (2,7-AQDS) is used as negative active material and Tiron is used as positive active material for aqueous redox flow battery (RFB). In previous results that used the 2,7-AQDS and Tiron, sulfuric acid ($H_2SO_4$) was a supporting electrolyte. However, in this study, ammonium chloride ($NH_4Cl$) is suggested as the electrolyte for the first time. By changing the supporting electrolyte from $H_2SO_4$ to $NH_4Cl$, the cell voltage of RFB is improved from 0.76 V to 1.01 V. To investigate the effect of $NH_4Cl$ supporting electrolyte of the performance of RFB, the full-cell tests of RFB using 2,7-AQDS and Tiron that are dissolved in $NH_4Cl$ supporting electrolyte are carried out, while cut-off voltage range is a main parameter to determine their performance. When the cut-off voltage range is 0.2~1.6 V, the hydrogen evolution occurs during charging step. To address the side reaction effect, the cut-off voltage range is changed to 0.2~1.2 V. When the revised cut-off voltage range is used and the current density of $40mA/cm^2$ is applied, hydrogen evolution is not observed and the optimal RFB shows the charge efficiency of 99% and discharge capacity of 3.3 Ah/L at 10cycle.
