To improve fire-resistance of a high strength concrete against spalling under elevated temperature, fibers can be mixed to provide flow paths of evaporated water to the surface of concrete when heated. In this study, the experiment of a column under fire and mechanical loads is conducted and the material model for predicting temperature of reinforcement steel bar and mechanical behavior of fiber-mixed high strength concrete is suggested. The material model in previous studies is modified by incorporating physical behavior of internal concrete and thermal characteristics of concrete at the elevated temperature. Thermo-mechanical analysis of the fiber-mixed high strength concrete column is conducted using the calibrated material model. The performance of the proposed material model is confirmed by comparing thermo-mechanical analysis results with the experiment of a column under fire and mechanical loads.

Shape memory alloys (SMAs) are smart materials. The unique characteristics of SMAs enable the production of large force and displacement. Hence, SMAs can be used in many applications such as in actuators and active structural acoustic controllers; the SMAs can also be used for dynamic tuning and shape control. A SMA torque tube actuator consisting of SMA tubes and superelastic springs is proposed, and the behaviors of the actuator are investigated. From the results of heat transfer analysis, it is proved that the SMA torque tube actuator with both resistive heating of SMA itself and a separate conventional heating rod in the tube core has good performance. The behavior of an actuator system was analyzed by performing a contact analysis, and the twisting motion was noticed when checking the actuation. 3D SMA nonlinear constitutive equations were formulated numerically and implemented by performing a nonlinear analysis by using Abaqus UMAT.

A vacuum freeze drying experiment of skim milk solution in a cylindrical container is conducted to investigate the multi-dimensional drying characteristics of the process during the primary drying stage. Temperature histories at several positions are measured under the same process condition that is carefully controlled. Then the measured temperature histories at different positions are combined to produce instantaneous temperature distribution fields inside the cylindrical container. Along with the temperature measurement, the mass reduction history of the skim milk solution is also measured. From the measured temperature distribution curved configurations of sublimation interfaces and 2-dimensional heat transfer is inferred. The freeze drying under the present experimental setup is simulated with a calculation program that is based on a finite volume method with a moving grid system. Good agreements between the numerical and experimental results are observed. The present experimental results and the numerical approaches can be useful information in developing the analysis tools for practical vacuum freeze drying processes.

Photoacoustic generation of ultrasound is an effective approach for development of high-frequency and high-amplitude ultrasound transmitters. This requires an efficient energy converter from optical input to acoustic output. For such photoacoustic conversion, various light-absorbing materials have been used such as metallic coating, dye-doped polymer composite, and nanostructure composite. These transmitters absorb laser pulses with 5-10 ns widths for generation of tens-of-MHz frequency ultrasound. The short optical pulse leads to rapid heating of the irradiated region and therefore fast thermal expansion before significant heat diffusion occurs to the surrounding. In this purpose, nanocomposite thin films containing gold nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), or carbon nanofibers have been recently proposed for high optical absorption, efficient thermoacosutic transfer, and mechanical robustness. These properties are necessary to produce a high-amplitude ultrasonic output under a low-energy optical input. Here, we investigate carbon nanotube (CNT)-polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composite transmitters and their nanostructure-originated characteristics enabling extraordinary energy conversion. We explain a thermoelastic energy conversion mechanism within the nanocomposite and examine nanostructures by using a scanning electron microscopy. Then, we measure laser-induced damage threshold of the transmitters against pulsed laser ablation. Particularly, laser-induced damage threshold has been largely overlooked so far in the development of photoacoustic transmitters. Higher damage threshold means that transmitters can withstand optical irradiation with higher laser energy and produce higher pressure output proportional to such optical input. We discuss an optimal design of CNT-PDMS composite transmitter for high-amplitude pressure generation (e.g. focused ultrasound transmitter) useful for therapeutic applications. It is fabricated using a focal structure (spherically concave substrate) that is coated with a CNT-PDMS composite layer. We also introduce some application examples of the high-amplitude focused transmitter based on the CNT-PDMS composite film.

This paper was studied for optimum design of the used vaporizer at a satellite station. Generally, the cold air is created by temperature drop on the vaporizer surface. In addition, the frost creates ice deposit layer, therefore, heat transfer on vaporizer decreases into the adiabatic condition. By this reason, recent vaporizer system is installed as parallel type, and it takes three times of vaporizer capacity. But this vaporizer system requires much installation costs and restricted by some space. It is very important to solve this problem. This study paper is regarding $LN_2$ vaporizer where the utilization increases recently. There are three variable conditions which are used in this study research. First, fin lengths of 4000mm, 6000mm, 8000mm and 0, 4, 8 fin types were applied rut each vaporizer. Second, we applied four season condition which consist of humidity, temperature and air velocity to the experimental environment. Finally, pressure was applied to get flow rate during experiment. This paper objective is to propose vaporizer type and length data for best performance of vaporizer through experiment.

Enhanced tubes are used widely in the evaporators of large tonnage compression-type refrigerators. The evaporators consist of tube bundles, and the refrigerant properties are dependent on the locations in the tube bundles. In particular, the saturation temperatures of low pressure refrigerants (R-11, R-123) are strongly dependent on the locations due to the saturation temperature-pressure curve characteristics. Therefore, for the proper design of evaporators, local property predictions of the refrigerants are necessary. In this study, a computer program that simulates the flooded refrigerant evaporators was developed. The program incorporated theoretical models to predict the refrigerant shell-side boiling heat transfer coefficients and pressure drops across the tube bundle. The program adopted an incremental iterative procedure to perform row-by-row calculations over the specified incremental tube lengths for each water-side pass. The program was used to simulate the flooded refrigerant evaporator of the "T" company operating with R-123, which yielded satisfactory results. The program was extended to predict the performance of the flooded refrigerant evaporator operating with R-11, R-123, and R-134a. The effects of bundle aspect ratio are investigated.
Adequate visibility through a vehicle windshield and frost melting period are critical aspects of major design parameters. To make progress in this area, a good understanding of the flow behavior and heat transfer characteristics produced by the HVAC module is required. The computational study was used to perform the parametric investigation into the defroster nozzle's performance with a full-scale model. The study highlights the drawbacks of current designs and points the way to improve passive defrosting mechanism. The results show that the current design of the defroster nozzles deliver the maximum airflow in the vicinity of the lower part of the windshield, which yields unsatisfactory visibility. Defrosting performance was excellent when the injection angle of the defrost nozzle was 45 degree. The numerical analysis satisfies the criteria provided by NHTSA.

Resonating thermal lags of solid fuel with heat transfer oscillations generated by boundary layer oscillation is the primary mechanism of the occurrence of the LFI (Low Frequency Combustion Instability) in hybrid rocket combustion. This study was experimentally attempted to confirm that how the boundary layer was perturbed and led to the LFI. Special attention was also made on oxidizer swirl injection to investigate the contribution to combustion stabilization. Also the overall behavior of fluctuating boundary layer flow and the occurrence of the LFI was monitored as swirl intensity increased. Fluctuating boundary layer was successfully monitored by the captured image and POD (Proper Orthogonal Decomposition) analysis. In the results, oscillating boundary layer became stabilized as the swirl intensity increases. And the coupling strength between high frequency p', q' diminished and periodical amplification of RI (Rayleigh Index) with similar frequency band of thermal lag was also decreased. Thus, results confirmed that oscillating axial boundary layer triggered by periodic coupling of high frequency p', q' is the primary mechanism to excite thermal resonance with thermal lag characteristics of solid fuel.

Natural convection of a magnetic fluid is different from that of Newtonian fluids because magnetic-body force exists in addition to gravity and buoyancy. In this paper, natural convection of a magnetic fluids (W-40) in a cubic cavity was examined by experimental method. One side wall was kept at a constant temperature (25 $^{\circ}C$), and the opposite side wall was also held at a constant but lower temperature (20 $^{\circ}C$). The magnetic fields of various magnitude were applied up and down by permanent magnets. We measured temperatures at 5 points which are the most suitable places in cavity by the analysis record. The thermo-sensitive liquid crystal film (R20C5A) was utilized in order to visualize wall-temperature distributions. Several kinds of experiments were carried out in order to clarify the influence of direction and intensity of magnetic fields on the natural convection. It was found that the natural convection of a magnetic fluids could be controlled by the direction and intensity of the magnetic fields.

A thermal-hydraulic design and performance analysis computer code for a once-through steam generator using straight tubes is developed. To benchmark the developed physical models and computer code, an once-through steam generator developed by other designer is simulated and the calculated results are compared with the design data. Also, the same steam generator is analyzed with the best-estimate thermal-hydraulic system code, MARS, for the code-to-code validation. The overall characteristics of heat transfer area, pressure and temperature distributions calculated by the developed code show general agreements with the published design data as well as the analysis results of MARS. It is demonstrated that the developed code can be utilized for diverse purposes, such as, sensitivity analyses and optimum thermal design of a once-through steam generator.
