  • In this study, the problem of using the mixing index as a measure of the mixing performance for a certain flow field has been discussed. The flow model subjected to this study is the two-dimensional unsteady lid-driven cavity flow. The transport equation for the concentration within the cavity was solved by using the finite volume method where the convective terms are discretized with the central difference scheme. It was shown that both the concentration dispersion and the mixing index depend highly on the initial distribution of the concentration, and therefore the mixing index obtained from the concentration dispersion equation loses its universal applicability.

  • In this study we present the numerical methods that can be used in visualization of the flow and mixing patterns in a cavity driven by a top lid. The basic flow field within the cavity has been obtained by using a simple numerical scheme. The invariant manifold also called unstable manifold was then attained to represent the mixing pattern within the cavity. It was shown that care must be taken in calculating the trajectories of the fluid particles especially near corners of the cavity. The numerical results show excellent agreement with those obtained experimentally by other research group.

  • Saturated boiling heat transfer experiment in a hemispherical narrow space is conducted using Freon-113 to investigate an additional heat removal capability through a hypothetical gap between lower head and degraded core. The narrow space of 1mm consists of a 124mm diameter heated stainless steel hemisphere and a glass outer vessel. Within the hemispherical narrow space large coalesced bubbles are produced and these bubbles rise in random direction, causing liquid flow in from the opposite side to fill the region. Such flow in random direction makes the flow field in the narrow space very chaotic and thus enhance heat transfer. The heat transfer coefficient is higher at lower angle and at higher heat flux. The present study shows that the liquid from upper region can effectively penetrate into the gap and augment the heat removal capability through tile gap.

  • The flow velocity distribution at inlet and exit of Diesel Particulate Filter(DPF) by fabricating L-shape connector with the DPF was measured using a Pitot-tube and 2-D transverse machine. An adaptor designed for making the Pitot tube probe access to the inlet and exit of the DPF was connected with the inlet and exit flange of the DPF, respectively. The Pitot tube which was mounted in the 2-D positioning machine could access to the inlet and exit of the DPF through the rectangular window of the adaptor. The L-shape connector in the DPF inlet has a flow guide which is a perforated steel pipe. The flow velocity distribution at the inlet of the DPF showed a chaotic velocity distribution which is different from that with a diffuser type connector. The velocity distribution at the exit of the DPF showed a crown shape which is similar to that of the diffuser type connector. The velocity distribution at the exit of DPF showed different patterns according to the air flow rate.

  • The Boltzmann kinetic equation is solved directly by means of the conservative splitting method. Underexpanded supersonic free jet flows with small Knudsen numbers are studied. In this numerical simulation features intrinsic to appropriate experiments are observed. Streamwise vortices in a mixing layer and chaotic downstream temporal-spatial fluctuations of microscopic quantities with large amplitude are obtained.

  • A study was conducted on the coolant mixing between water flowing in two adjacent subchannels. Measurements were made of the quantity of mass transferred between a larger rectangular channel and a smaller triangular channel in a 19-rod fuel bundle under the conditions of single phase flow and air-water two-phase flow. The results of the experiments showed that the low mixing rate appears in single phase flow, and high mixing rate was measured in air-water two-phase flow Mixing rate decreases with the increasing of air void fraction during the air-water flow. It seems that the high mixing rate in the air-water flow was caused due to adequate agitation of the chaotic air void.

  • The three-dimensional Stokes flow within a staggered screw channel is obtained by using a finite volume method. The geometry is intended to mimic the single screw extruder having staggered arrangement of flights. The flow solution is then subjected to the analysis of the stirring performance. In the analysis of the stirring performance, the stretching-mapping method developed by the author is employed for calculating the materials' stretching exponents, which are to be used in quantification of the mixing effect. The numerical results Indicate that the staggered geometry gives indeed far much better stirring-performance than the standard (nonstaggered) flight geometry. It was also shown that care must be given to the selection of the basis planes for evaluating the local stretching rate, and it turns out that the best method (H-method) has its basis plane just on the half way between the past and future evolution of fluid particles subjected to the defromation. In evaluating the stretching exponent, the expansion ratio must be considered which is one of the characteristic differences of the actual three-dimensional flows from the two-dimensionmal counterparts. The larger axial pressure-difference causes in general the smaller stirring performance while the flow rate is increased. The smaller channel length also increases the stirring performance.

  • In the cathode channel of a PEM fuel cell, the local concentration of oxygen near the gas diffusion layer (GDL) decreases in streamwise direction due to chemical reactions, which degrades the efficiency of the oxygen consumption and overall fuel cell efficiency. We numerically studied the influence of the swirling flow generated by a slanted groove mixer (SGM) on the concentration distribution of oxygen. We found that the swirling flow can increase the concentration of oxygen near the GDL, and subsequently improves the oxygen consumption rate.

  • In this study, we show the numerical and the experimental results for fluid motions inside a rectangular container subjected to a background rotation added by a rotational oscillation. In the numerical computation, we used a parallel computer system of PC-cluster type. Attention is given to dependence of the flow patterns on the parameter change. It shows that the flow becomes in a periodic state at low Reynolds numbers and undergoes a transition to a chaotic motion at high Reynolds numbers. It also shows that the fluid motion tends to be depth-independent at ${\epsilon}$ up to 0.3 for Re lower than 5235.
